credentialed and experienced, and Northrup and one other are certified in educational therapy. “We are striving to serve kids that are excelling academically, but also those who are (challenged),” said Northrup, who noted that weekly tutoring is offered.

The school follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for COVID-19.

To keep communication flowing in the drop-off program, assignment sheets are provided to parents weekly, and Northrup sends out a

monthly newsletter. A fellowship of mothers meets twice a month at the school to pray.

“Our vision is threefold,” said Northrup. “We look to equip students … encourage parents, and cultivate hope.”

Shelleen Weaver of New Holland is sending her son to Firm Foundations this fall.

“My son is thriving in this environment, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” reported Weaver.

Becca Stamp, director of development and communications with Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, is excited to highlight the changes that have happened at the museum since COVID-19 restrictions began in March. A number of STEM-oriented activities were added, and the agricultural exhibit was revamped before the museum reopened in June.

The museum also has some new ways to give area families an opportunity to visit. “A year ago, we partnered with the Lancaster County Public Libraries,” said Stamp, who noted that passes to the museum can be found on library shelves throughout the county. In early January, Hands-on

House executive director Jim Bland reached out to Hempfield School District librarian Cathi Furman and arranged to offer a family pass through the school libraries. Stamp noted that the museum administration hopes the concept will lead to offering passes in libraries and through other organizations in other school districts. “The point is to give more kids a chance to visit,” Stamp said.

Hempfield students may check out a family pass in the same way they do any other library material. The pass will be due back the next time library materials are due to be returned. The pass may be used any day of the week that the museum is open, and it may be used on multiple days. Because the pass is for the whole family, parents and siblings may join the student at the

Proverbs 31 Book Reaches Out To Women

In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September.

Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.”

matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women,” said Hernandez-Tuten.

With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy.

“I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours,” said Hernandez-Tuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of

time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. Hernandez-Tuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity,” she said. There is an “Act” section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned.” The study can be done individually or in groups.

With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit,” HernandezTuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house.” Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined,” Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her hus-

band teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months.

About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book!” event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, HernandezTuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. museum. Stamp explained that the pass is good for all museum exhibits, including open art classes.

Changing up the museum involved transforming its grocery store area to a farmers market, which Stamp noted is a better fit for Lancaster County. The exhibit still includes a tractor, a henhouse, and the hayloft, which is a favorite with young visitors.

Beyond the farmers market is a large area filled with activities such as robots, an enormous “Lite Brite,” and a robotic arm in a glass box reminiscent of arcade claw games. “This is a hands-free interactive game,” said Stamp, referring to an area of the floor where a keyboard similar to the one in the movie “Big” is projected. By stepping on the keys, a child can produce piano notes. On the wall behind the activity is

an apparatus that shows how air flow can be diverted. Balls pop from the wall, and children can attempt to catch them with nets. In addition, the area awaits the placement of a two-story structure built in partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors. Components will eventually feature the work of plumbers, electricians, masons, and carpenters. Art classes have included block printing and making natural tie dye.

The museum is currently operating at reduced capacity, and masks are required for people age 3 and up. Temperature checks and washing hands before going into the museum are part of the protocol. LCHS Announces Capital Campaign Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) announced its “Cherish Love Honor: The Campaign for Lancaster Catholic High School” rollout. The capital campaign in support of a $12.7 million initiative will transform the current building to enhance the student experience and learning environment by creating attractive spaces for learning. Elements of Phase 1 include an auditorium and Catholic Student Life Center, with a Student Commons and dining hall, as well as a STEM Innovation Center.

Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.”

Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.”

A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.”

“Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now,” said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.”

Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward,” he said.

“The mentors all build each other up.”

“We wanted to make the season bright for the families and keep them all safe,” said Alisha Fitzwater, one of the organizers of the Gigi’s Playhouse Drive-Through Christmas event that was held on Dec. 5 in the parking lot at GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, located at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster.

Originally, GiGi’s had planned to hold its annual Pancakes and Pajamas event on that day at Bright Side Opportunities Center in Lancaster.

To keep the event safe, organizers had scheduled three different sessions to limit occupancy. Each session was to include a visit with Santa and a live band playing Christmas music.

In early December, though, with numbers related to COVID-19 infections rising, Fitzwater said the team decided to put efforts into creating a drive-through, contactless experience at GiGi’s Playhouse that allowed for social distancing for the 40 families that planned to attend.

“We had a lot of businesses donate, so we could have the activity bags for all the families,” Fitzwater said, adding that visitors were of all ages.

Fitzwater said about eight stations were set up around the edges of the parking lot where visitors in their cars could stop. “(Families) do a short activity at each (station),” explained Fitzwater, who said that some of the activities included voting for a favorite Christmas activity or Christmas movie. tion, visitors could guess the number of bows on a giant present. Pete the Corgi, who was dressed as a reindeer for the event, and a person in a Grinch costume greeted guests.

“As they drive through, they are also (taking part in) a scavenger hunt looking for things that are hidden around in the grass and with the inflatables,” said Fitzwater. Christmas-themed inflatables covered the lawn. They included an elephant and several incarnations of Santa, including him riding in a race car, flying a plane with moving propellers, and being pulled from the chimney by a reindeer. Several of those manning the stations wore pajamas in honor of the Pancakes and Pajamas theme.

At Fitzwater’s station, bags containing craft items and other age-appropriate activities for each family were handed out. “We ask parents to take photos of them doing the activities to share,” said Fitzwater.

The next to the last station featured Three Cords Bound band playing Christmas tunes. “The band plays every year, so they were happy to perform outside,” said Fitzwater.

The final station featured a visit with Santa Claus. “We tried to think of things the kids could enjoy and give them something they could look at,” said Fitzwater.
