R090881 encouraging and equipping the saints.” “We are all about giving a platform to people who don’t have one,” said Leslie. The book “Ordinary Saints: Living Everyday Life to the Glory of God” was published in celebration of Square Halo’s anniversary.

This year, special Friday afternoon activities have been added to the event at no charge. Presentations will be made by Tom Becker of the Row House forum and author Lisa Smith, a songwriters circle will be held with Matt Wheeler, and Friday night’s featured speaker will be art historian Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt.

On Saturday, a number of speakers will be featured. “The author Sean Smucker and Christie Purifoy will be with us,” said Leslie, who added that there will be an emphasis on speakers from the surrounding area. “Christine Perrin, a professor at Messiah University, will speak (along with) Dan Spanjer, a historian, who is now principal at Veritas Academy,” she added. Lancaster Bible College professor Shanika Churchville will speak on “Ordinary Scholars: Justice in the Writing Classroom.” Other activities will include a round table reading of “Babette’s Feast” led by theater director Bonnie Bosso, a tea and poetry reading, a pop-up printing session, and a pub night.

Entertainment will be featured as well. “Our concert (artist) is a band called The Arcadian Wild, and they are a bluegrass band,” Leslie noted. “We feed people breakfast and lunch and a lot of snacks from local places,” she added.

Following the difficulties of COVID-19 restrictions the last few years, Leslie hopes to see attendees have a chance to gather and experience joy. “My goal is that people are refreshed,” she said. “I want to offer a gift. I envision us bringing people together looking at all of life before God and how it can be glorifying.”

Art Exhibit To Run Through December

B. Emerson, a West Reading artist with a focus on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes, will continue the exhibition of her newest collection, “Dark Games & Other Little Things,” at Mulberry Art Studios into December. Guests can contact the gallery curator at stephanie. mulberryart@gmail.com to arrange a visit.

Since a young age, making art has always been a way of life for Emerson. After college, working in other industries and starting a family, she rediscovered her love for drawing after the death of her spouse. Graphite pencil and paper is Emerson’s preferred medium. In earlier works, the inspiration of wood grain was partially used in paintings but not in its entirety as it is today. It has now become a signature style in identifying Emerson’s work.

Each piece has depth of movement through perspective, rich tonality and contrast with the use of black and white and the incorporation of wood grain. Emerson’s inspiration comes from a deeply rooted fascination with nature, people and life events.

This year’s exhibit will showcase a variety of Emerson’s work through the last two years, including 10 new pieces. A mix of all series and themes is featured, and works are on a small to large scale.

Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information, visit www.mulberryart studios.com or search for ‘Mulberry Art Studios” on Facebook.

The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”

Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.

Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”

Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”

The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”

For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

UZRC Announces Expansion Plans

On Oct. 15, United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) announced its plans to build a new independent residential living apartment building on its campus. The new building will be located near the current main building along Furnace Hills Pike in Lititz. It is expected to have around 47 new apartments as well as new common space for campus residents. The groundbreaking is scheduled for the fall of 2023, and the plan is for residents to move into the new apartments in the spring of 2025. Currently, United Zion has a waitlist of over two years for its current independent residential living options. The new apartment building will include two-bedroom apartments; one-bedroom apartments with a den; and one-bedroom apartments without a den. The new apartments will also be larger than the current apartments, ranging from 700 to 1,100 square feet. The new building will possess new common spaces, including a larger fitness center, fresh dining options, and additional gathering areas.

The final building design and layouts will be available this winter. Applications are currently being accepted for the new units, and reservations will start in the spring of 2023. To learn more, visit www.uzrc.org or contact Megan Weiss at mweiss@uzrc.org.

Christmas traditions today are mostly contained to a oneday celebration on Dec. 25, when families around the world exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ. However, over 200 years ago, Colonial Americans observed the holiday in a much different fashion.

Yuletide Tours will return to Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Dec. 27; Wednesday, Dec. 28; and Thursday, Dec. 29, to provide an immersive view into how Lancaster County residents celebrated Christmas in the late 18th century. The Hand Mansion at Rock Ford will be open for self-guided tours on Dec. 27 and 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Dec. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.

Guests will have an opportunity to walk through the historic former home of Edward Hand, which will be decorated as it would have been when Hand lived there. Volunteers dressed in period accurate attire will be stationed throughout the house to answer questions, and hearth cookers will prepare historically accurate food in the kitchen and explain to guests what meals were customary in the old days. In the halls of the mansion, dancers will perform traditional routines from the 18th century such as Jack’s Health, Midnight Ramble and Duke of Kent’s Waltz.

For the first time, live music will be provided by harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin, as well as Faith’s sister, Mercy, on the violin. The musicians will perform classical pieces and traditional Yuletide carols, many of which would have been performed in the Hand Mansion while Hand lived there. Jasper Yates, the uncle of Hand’s wife, Catherine, and a close friend of Hand’s, lived in Lancaster during this time period and owned a harpsichord himself.

The Yuletide Tours will also include a scavenger hunt activity for children, and guests will have an opportunity to hear a recording of Hand, portrayed by an actor from the Theater of the Seventh Sister. In the recording, Hand will reminisce on the Christmas of 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River with George Washington and his company.

R091013 frompg 9 2022 is the first year that Rock Ford will host full Yuletide Tours since 2019, as the event was canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. When the tours began over 30 years ago, they were less centered around a historically accurate portrayal of the property and the property was decorated in a more modern fashion. Around 2005, Rock Ford began to alter the tours to give an accurate glimpse into the Christmas celebrations of the time.

“One of the reasons we do the tours after Christmas is that Dec. 25 marked the beginning of the holiday for the old English, and it would last until Jan. 6,” said Sam Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford. Historically, the English observed Christmas Day strictly as a religious event and would save the festivities for the 12th day of Christmas.

To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https://historicrockford.org /events/.
