There are few things more detrimental to development than kids growing up without parental figures. Conversely, there are few things that possess more healing power than music. Scaling Walls A Note at a Time (SWAN) is performing some wonderful work with music and kids in the school district of Lancaster who have been affected

by their parents’ incarceration. An organization without a brick-and-mortar building or office, SWAN is currently serving about 80 Lancaster city kids ages 5 to 17. “SWAN’s music and mental health program is a unique and innovative model,” said Diana Vuolo, SWAN’s founder and executive director. “The School District of Lancaster gets to be leaders. Township teenager Bobby Brandt’s already a master fly fisherman BY JEFF FALK

Only 14, Bobby Brandt already has more than a decade of fishing experience under his belt.

Isn’t Bobby Brandt a little young to be such an accomplished fly fisherman? Yes. Yes, he is. Bobby, a 14-year-old Manheim Township Middle School student, excels in a pursuit usually associated with individuals 30 or 40 years his senior. But Bobby is proving that the meticulous sport of flying fishing is something not limited by preconceived notions. “When I was younger, I thought of fly fishing as something done by people older than me,” said Bobby. “I have good eyes. I can

move around. I have a lot of patience, and I understand the fish. I love being out in nature. I love the sport. I am dedicated to it.” In the early days of October, Bobby captured a spot on the United States Angling Youth Fly Fishing team. Bobby earned the position through a national competition in Paradise Valley, Mont. “It was my first fly fishing competition, and I was super excited,” said Bobby. “The session in the lake I didn’t do super good because I didn’t have a lot of See Township teenager pg 3

The impact SWAN has had has been lifesaving for some children and life-changing for many.” Vuolo estimated that on any given day in Lancaster County, 3,000 kids are affected by parental incarceration. She also said that there are 900 to 1,000 homeless children in the city of Lancaster and that many of them are affected by incarceration. “Incarceration has a great impact on children,” said Vuolo. “Of course, it separates them from their parents, and they have a sense of abandonment. There could be alcohol or drug abuse involved. Children can experience domestic violence.” “Parents are the primary

people that children trust,” continued Vuolo. “When that is removed, trust is removed. Their whole sense of self is lost. You’ll find they have difficulty learning. It often crushes them or breaks them.” SWAN identifies kids through school counselors and then reaches them through music, music lessons, singing, dancing and playing instruments like the violin, guitar, ukulele, drums and bass. But there are also performance, mentoring and spiritual counseling pieces involved with what it does. “Research underscores how much music helps develop brains,” said Vuolo. “By playing an instrument, kids can express themselves without words. It helps them socially. They have to focus. Our children may believe trauma is normal. By making music, they’re more likely to talk when they have a problem. It’s an identity that’s very positive.” Vuolo was a violin professor at Lancaster Bible College in 2011 when she founded SWAN. “I saw the impact music had on children,” said

Vuolo, a 68-year-old resident of Downingtown. “My husband was counseling inmates and I started to observe how trauma impacted children. I’m an advocate for children. That’s how SWAN got started.” “I started an afterschool program and then the School District of Lancaster became interested,” Vuolo continued. “Kids who are affected by incarceration fall through the cracks. Bobby’s only been tying his own flies for six months, but he already counts more than 200 among his collection. “Sometimes fish aren’t super picky about your fly,” said Bobby. “How you drift your fly down the current is 80% why they eat it. One reason they don’t eat it is the drag on your line. Knowing what fish do can help you catch fish. You have to be super calm in the water. Fish can feel vibrations and they can get spooked, and once they get

spooked, it’s really hard to catch (them).” Another thing Bobby’s got going for him is experience - and repetition. Despite his youth, Bobby’s been fishing for as long as he can remember, thanks in part to support from his parents and grandparents. “His grandfather would take him on the Conestoga River fishing,” said Kathryn. “My parents would take him to Florida and all Bobby wanted to do was go on the ponds and catch fish. Every vacation we’ve ever been on, we’d always find water.” “Fly fishing is a bit different than gear fishing and spin fishing,” said Bobby.

Jeff Larkin, a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, along with three of his graduate students, will present “Ornithology Research Update: Scarlet Tanagers and Ruffed Grouse.” Larkin and the graduate students will report on their research on the decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. Ephrata Cloister to offer Lantern Tours Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host Lantern Tours on Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 30. In coordination of the release of the revision of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s popular “Children Open your Eyes to Litter” series of books for children in kindergarten through grade six, the theme is “Open Your Eyes to Litter - Show Us What You See.” Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten through grade four, an essay for children in grade five and a video for children in grade six. The deadline to participate is Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024. First- and second-place winners will be awarded prizes in each grade level. All participants will receive recognition of participation.
