On Thanksgiving Day, the Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR) and Manheim Township Police Department (MTPD) participated in their first Turkey Bowl. MTFR bested MTPD by a score of 48 to 36 in overtime. During the free event, the organizations collected nonperishable food items to be distributed to those in need. The event was one of many holiday activities planned by Manheim Township organizations.
To enhance the holiday spirit of the area, MTFR, MTPD, and the Manheim Township Fire Foundation have also partnered to collect Toys for Tots and to hold A Morning With Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Richmond Square Fire Station, 600 Richmond Drive, Lancaster, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. “Santa will pose for photos with kids,” said MTFR Chief Scott Little, who added that candy canes, cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee will be available for those who attend. Of the partnership organizing the event, Little noted, “We will each (do our part) to make it a magical holiday season for Manheim Township residents.”
Items collected from the food drive will be distributed to local organizations that fight food insecurity, such as Blessings of Hope, Power Packs, and Arch Street Center. Food will be accepted at the MTPD and all MTFR stations through Sunday, Dec. 18.
Items for Toys for Tots will also be accepted at those same locations through Dec. 18. There is a special need for toys for boys and girls ages 8 to 12.
“As public servants, it’s more than a job; it’s a calling to serve,” said Little. “That’s a top priority in the community.” In that capacity, Little sees opportunities to reach out. “We want to be good stewards as employees of the township,” he said. “To build relations as much as we can.” He noted that both the Turkey Bowl and the Morning With Santa events have specific purposes.
“We can have those direct intentional conversations with members of our community in a good setting to come together over the holidays and celebrate what it means to be good people in all these magical season moments,” he said.

Terry Shamberger, one of the founders of Encounter Ministries, recently shared some sobering statistics. “Lancaster County was thought of as the Bible Belt in Pennsylvania,” said Terry. “Right now, if you take a look at the population in Lancaster County, (about) 51% of those people don’t walk with the Lord … don’t know Him.” With the population at more than 500,000, Terry estimated that number at about 250,000. “and we have churches on every corner,” he noted.

welcoming Santa to the Richmond Square Fire Station.
Keith held the first practice in October, and so far, the team has about 15 players, ranging in age from 7 to 17. They come from Lancaster, Harrisburg and York.
Keith saw the benefits of basketball firsthand when his daughter, Samantha, joined a wheelchair basketball team in Maryland, where they used to live. “She’s been playing since she was 6 years old,” Keith said, of his now-21-year-old daughter. “The sport changed the trajectory of her life.” Keith and his wife, Sandy, noticed that being a part of the team helped Samantha increase her self-esteem,
expanded her social life and led to academic improvement.
Originally from this area, Keith and Sandy moved back when Keith took a job as the director of Life Lion at Penn State Health. A retired Maryland state trooper, Keith had coached basketball and baseball before, and he knew local kids would benefit from a wheelchair basketball team, especially since Samantha’s team had players who traveled from Pennsylvania to participate. He connected with Janetta Green of the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania, which is sponsoring the team.
There is currently no cost for participants thanks to a sponsor who is covering court time at Spooky Nook. It’s an expensive sport to play, however, since players use special wheelchairs with cambered wheels for improved maneuverability. Each chair costs about $5,000, Keith said. He has been able to purchase some and some players have received chairs through grants, but the team is looking for sponsors to purchase more chairs.
For many of the players, this is their first experience in the sport chairs. “It’s a gamechanger for them once they get in one of these chairs,” Keith commented. “Their faces just light up.”
For almost all of the players, it’s also their first time playing basketball.
“No experience is needed,” said Sara Echegoyen, a junior at Manheim Central High School. “You don’t have to be a great basketball player. Everyone is really nice and supportive. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and just having fun.”
Dakota’s dad, Drew, said he loves watching his daughter on the court. “She’s a little bit competitive, and she loves to go fast,” he said, noting that Dakota used to travel to Maryland to play, but he’s happy to have a team closer to home. “This is a phenomenal outlet for her. It’s opened up a lot of doors for her.”
Keith spends part of each practice going over basketball drills and rules while encouraging each player to understand what he or she brings to the team. He plans to begin playing games against other teams in February, starting with the team in Maryland.
He noted that much more is happening on the court than just a sport. “We try to teach life skills - independence, focus, teamwork, sportsmanship,” Keith remarked. “We emphasize that this is about fun and fitness. The basketball is a bonus.”
For more information on the team, contact Keith at 443-8292460 or kmcminn@pennstate health.psu.edu.

In response, Terry has joined with four others - Ernie Simmons, Ron Steffy, Kevin Semrau, and Terry’s son, Steve - to form Encounter Ministries. The organization’s mission is to use events, an area where Terry and Simmons have extensive experience, to reach people with the goal of “encountering” God. However, the ministry does not plan to stop with just an introduction. As the ministry casts nets, the focus will be on more than simply catch and release. “It’s not about making converts,” said Terry. “It’s about making disciples.”
Encounter has its roots in a Bible study the men started attending each Tuesday morning a dozen years ago. “Most of us knew each other from that (study),” said Terry, who added that the men attend different churches.
Blue Christmas Service Planned
Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a Blue Christmas service on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. in the church’s chapel.
The intimate, reflective service is for anyone who has lost a loved one recently or otherwise encounters grief and sadness during the holiday season. A safe place is being prepared for worshipers to encounter God in a healing and meaningful way.
For more information, contact Jamie Nace, pastor of child and elder ministries, at PastorJamieN@lancob.org or 717-397-4751,
“We got to talking that we should be doing more.” Terry noted that the Lord revealed to him that worship could be used as a weapon in the battle, backing it up with Scripture from Second Chronicles 20, where Jehoshaphat was surrounded and found victory by going to the top of a mountain to worship.
Presently, Encounter holds a Bible study each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lititz City Gate location, 101 N. Broad St., Lititz. On Friday nights, Encounter holds a coffee house with live music from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Gate. However, the ministry has set its sights on a large worship
event, hopefully to be held in the near future. “We’re planning probably sometime in late spring or early summer … to do a big prayer and praise event here in Lancaster County,” said Terry, who added the group would like to bring in a worship leader to attract attendees and partnerships with other ministries.
Working in unity with other churches and ministries is an important concept for the founders of Encounter. “We want to work with everybody,” explained Terry. “We would like to partner with every church that the Lord is willing to (bring us) and to fill those churches up with peo-
ple.” Terry said the idea is not to found a new church, but rather to create a “united body of Christ to bring in a great harvest.”
Terry noted that he believes the ministry can accomplish all its goals by organizing worship events. “What better, easier way to get churches to be able to work together than through worship?” he asked.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered
The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses
within a budget, he offered several pointers.
Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door, some shrubs or a perfect treeand focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights.
Then complete the look by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or

rooflines with lights or tuck hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.
Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.
Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season. This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.
Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and first-year medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For SaintFort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti,

Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her passion to

pursue medicine was conceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.
Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a firstyear student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.
Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.
Chao, a former medical scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly
University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine. Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system. Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.
Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.
Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, individual medical society members, local businesses and Lancaster-area residents. Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

Class of 2023 National Merit Recognition
Manheim Township High School honored this year’s National Merit recipients at the annual National Merit Scholarship Dessert Reception! The following students were recognized: This year, two of our students were nominated as Semifinalists:
• Michael Vogt
• Kevin Zhang
We had eight students qualify as Commended Students: • Gerald Banaszak • Mal Barber • Aaron Besnoff • Elle Commerce • Louis Elioff • Liam Rockwell • Zayn Syed
• Brogan Greer (not pictured below)
The reception provided an opportunity to recognize those students who have been identified by the College Board as COMMENDED or SEMI-FINALISTS as demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Qualifying Test – most often referred to as the PSAT/NMSQT.
In addition to recognizing students and their families for this accomplishment, the students were also asked to select one teacher who they believed had a significant impact on their education.
Congratulations to all of our National Merit Scholarship SemiFinalists and Commended students, and to the teachers who have inspired them.
Apply today! For a complete list of open positions and for information on how to apply, please visit the website at www.mtwp.net. R090895
