When Deb Frantz, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS), met potter Jeff White at a craft fair in Mount Gretna, she was so impressed with his work that she asked if he might create a collectible mug for the historical society to sell. “I thought it had just the feel we would like to have,” said Frantz.

The new Manheim Township 1729 collectible folk art mugs, crafted by White with a reproduction 18th-century Pennsylvania German design, will be on sale at the free Community Christmas Open House the historical society will hold at Stoner House, located at 601 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, on the Overlook campus off Fruitville Pike. The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7,

and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.

In the 1970s, White began creating redware pottery in a style that dates to the early 1700s. White’s lead-free functional artwork has become known for its ability to be used in the oven, microwave, or dishwasher.

In addition to the mug, the old-fashioned community Christmas gathering will include shopping opportunities.

Door prizes and other giveaways will include themed baskets. MTHS members will prepare hot mulled cider, cookies, and an assortment of other treats for guests at the event, and Christmas music will fill Stoner House.

A bake sale including cookies and other goodies will also be held.

For the delight of children who visit the open house, Santa Claus will be available for photo opportunities from noon to 2 p.m. each day the open house is held.

happen,” said Fox of one of the six scenes witnessed by visitors who take the journey.

Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. This year, the ninth event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 13 and 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn.

The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ Child in the manger. The path through Woodcrest will be lit by luminarias to guide guests on their way.

One script change this year will have the visitors meeting up with security along the path. “Visitors will be confronted by a Roman guard, and they will be stopped by him,” said Fox. “There will be some drama there.”

As in the past, visitors will begin the journey by registering for the census and paying their “tax,” which is the admission fee. Visitors will then ride by wagon to the area where the first scene will take place. A moderate amount of walking on uneven terrain along trails is required to complete the journey.

Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hour-long trek.

Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.

A large number of people have attended Journey to Bethlehem over the eight years it has been held. Fox noted that in spite of some inclement weather on two of the event nights last year, more than 2,000 people attended.

More than 17,000 have participated since Woodcrest began holding the fundraiser. Some families have driven from as far as New Jersey and New York City to attend.

Fox noted that although much of the script remains the same from year to year, each production is a little different as cast members change. “It’s always interesting because the people who are involved in the production change, and they bring their own take on the story,” he said. “It’s interesting to see that each (actor or actress) brings (his or her) own unique flavor (to a role).”

The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household.

Reservations are available for groups of 15 or more.

All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Camps run during June, July, and August. Holiday Social Planned The .918 Club will host its holiday social on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Granite Run Isaac’s, 1559 Manheim Pike, Lancaster.

The yearly event gives members, guests, and friends of The .918 Club the opportunity to gather for an evening of fellowship and food. Appetizers will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m., compliments of The .918 Club. For dinner, which will begin at 7 p.m., attendees will be able to order from the restaurant menu.

Those planning to attend should register with the number in their party by Monday, Dec. 9, so enough appetizers can be prepared.

Library Will Host Event On Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., will hold a “Library Happening” to celebrate the culmination of a project a year in the making. In January, Lancaster-area students in all grades were invited to submit original writing and artwork based on the theme “It Happened at the Library,” which would eventually become the title of both a book and a play. Stories, poetry, plays and drawings poured in from around the county. Project director Sandy Asher, an author and playwright based in Lancaster city, compiled the submissions into the book.

Contributors include Arianna Allen, Sarah Bandy, Adali Bishop, Emma Bishop, Ali Bube, Collin Bube, Sophia Burt, Lauren Byrnes, Sydney Conlin, Natalia Dygul, Mimi French, Brynley Graybill, Maura F. Hall, Brady Norgaard, Sydney Norgaard, Riley Rinehart, Maggie Roe, Pharoah Sisler-Dubetz, David Striggle, Joey Striggle, Gwenn Twilley, Tabitha Weeks, Stella Worley, Oskar Wright, and Sue Broaddus’s first-graders at King Elementary School.

Fox Chapel Publishing donated the publication of the book, which will make its debut at the Library Happening, with many of the young authors and illustrators on hand for a group autographing session from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Original artwork from the book will be on display.

Asher also used some of the material to create a new play appropriate for family audiences. Directed by Elliot Sterenfeld and featuring Grace Henderson, Joel Lesher, Isadora Marquez, Brady Norgaard and Sydney Norgaard, the play will be performed in Bates Auditorium at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Carol Woodman serves as stage manager, with set

design and construction by Tama Etra and Aaron Zinner.

The Bondelandet Lodge, the local connection with Sons of Norway, will meet on Friday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. In the town of Modin a Levite named Matthias refused to sacrifice a pig. He and his sons killed the Syrian captain and his soldiers. This started Israel’s successful three year rebellion against Syria. Israel was successful in their rebellion and the profaned Altar in the Temple was taken down and a new one was erected.

There was only enough consecrated oil in the Temple to burn for one day. The Lord made that small amount of oil last for eight days, until the new consecrated oil was ready. It was decided that the victory and the miracle of the oil would be celebrated every year, as a testimony to the saving grace of our eternal Master and King. Jewish families light their Candelabra with the addition of one more candle each day until eight candles are lit. The candles are always lit with one special candle called the servant candle (Shamash).

One hundred and sixty four years later, the most famous Jewish man that ever lived, stood in the Temple courts at the Feast of Dedication called Hanukkah. The people asked Him to tell them plainly, if He was the Messiah. He said “He and His Father are One” (John 10:30). He was the Prophet that Moses spoke about in Deutueronomy. 18:15ff. He said that “He is the light of the world” (John 8:12). “He brought light into the world but men loved darkness” (John 3:19). “He made the world but the world knows Him not” (John 1:10). “He laid his life down freely, no one could take it from Him” (John 10:18). His life was sacrificed for the benefit of all who would come to Him as Savior and Messiah. This was done according to “the set purpose and foreknowledge of His Heavenly Father” (Acts 2:23). He had to die, for The Scripture says “It is the blood that makes atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11).

Messiah wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). He says to all who will listen “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

(Matthew 11:28). “Arise, shine for thy light is come (Isaiah 60:1)” “Messiah is the light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel”. (Luke 2:32). Messiah said, “I am the root and the offspring of David. The bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16).

Yeshua (Jesus the Messiah) is the only one who can save you from eternal damnation. Come unto Him so that you may have eternal life with Him and His Father, in their everlasting Kingdom. It does not matter whether you are Jewish or Gentile.

He says to you PERSONALLY “Come to me and I will give you Eternal life with me”.

Pet Pantry Plans Open House, Pictures With Santa

It has been nearly 10 years since Melody Sanders founded the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The organization has flourished, moving from a rented storage unit to its own facility at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, and operating a mobile surgical trailer that enables veterinarians to perform neuter and spay services in remote locations.

“It totally blows my mind on all this,” Sanders marveled. “It’s an idea we brought to the public, and they support us.”

While Sanders dreams about buying a farm for the Pet Pantry, where pets would have room to run and interact with potential adoptive families, she is happy to show off the current facility. An open house on

Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will enable community members to tour the building, see the “state of the heart” surgical suite, meet staff members and volunteers, and interact with adoptable dogs and cats.

“We want people to come out and be educated on what we do here and how we meet the needs of the community,” Sanders said.

Guests are invited to bring dry pet food with them to the open house. While both dog food and cat food are needed, the Pet Pantry is currently experiencing a shortage of cat food. About 3,000 pounds of cat food is distributed each month, Sanders said, although she added that she typically underestimates how much food is given to households that would otherwise not be able to afford to keep their pets.

The Pet Pantry is currently supporting 325 households, with distribution locations in Gap and Lancaster city, as well as at its headquarters. “We’re helping people become responsible owners,” Sanders commented, noting that program participants are required to have their pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Dogs must be licensed in accordance with state law.

Well-behaved pets may be brought to the open house, as photographs with Santa Claus will be available for a small fee. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees may shop the thrift store, which will offer pet-themed Christmas gifts. Jewelry and “12 Dogs of Christmas” dog treats will be for sale as well.

At 6 p.m., the lights adorning the building’s exterior will officially be turned on for the season. Individuals may sponsor bulbs as part of the “Light the Way to Meet the Need” fundraiser. Additionally, attendees may take home empty water bottles to fill with dimes for the Pet Pantry. The bottles are labeled with “Charlie’s One Dime at a Time” in memory of the late Charlie MacMullen, who volunteered at the Pet Pantry until his death two years ago. Sanders’ last memory of MacMullen is of him giving her a water bottle

filled with dimes. While the contents of each bottle - typically between $11 and $12 - may not seem to go far individually, MacMullen’s legacy has made a lasting impact on Sanders and the Pet Pantry.

Sanders noted that the Pet Pantry has gone through a growth spurt in the last year.

The Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program has flourished, and a grant has made it possible for the mobile surgical trailer to go into the community to host TNR clinics. Online scheduling for vaccine clinics is available at www.petpantrylc.org, and online scheduling will soon be offered for spay/neuter appointments. Sanders welcomes ongoing donations of pet food, and bags of food may be dropped off at the Pet Pantry at any time. The organization is not picky about food, as the donations are blended before being portioned in order to make it easier on animals’ digestive tracts.

“I don’t care what size bag you give us, what brand you give us; I’ll take it all,” Sanders commented.

Scouts Slate Santa Celebration

The jolly old elf himself with be on hand to interact with diners and pose for pictures at the annual Breakfast With Santa event hosted by Boy Scout Troop 64 on Saturday, Dec. 7. The breakfast will be held at Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, and guests may drop by any time between 8 and 11 a.m.

For an admission fee, guests will be offered a meal containing pancakes, bacon and other breakfast meats, scrambled eggs, apples, coffee, tea, juice, and milk. Eggnog toasts will be held every hour and will be accompanied with the singing of carols. Additionally, youngsters may make crafts and cards for Marines, there will be a pancake-eating contest with Santa Claus, and prizes will be awarded to the wearers of ugly Christmas sweaters.

Pictures with Santa will also be available. The iconic character will pose with a backdrop and a Christmas tree so that participants will have photos suitable for holiday cards.

A Santa Shop will be set up so that children may shop for Christmas gifts for their loved ones. Toys, candles, craft kits, lotions, tools, flashlights, pocketknives, and other items will be modestly priced.

The Scouts will giftwrap purchases free of charge.

“For $5 to $10, you can get something for everyone on your list,” said Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans.

In addition to her service with Troop 64, Evans is a member of the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery

Boy Scout Troop 64 will hold its annual Breakfast With Santa event on Dec. 7 in Rohrerstown.

(IGNC) memorial council, and she has been instrumental in fostering the troop’s involvement with Wreaths Across America (WAA). On Dec. 7, the troop will accept donations for WAA, which strives to place a wreath on every veteran’s gravesite during the holiday season. The Scouts will also accept interment flags - the ones distributed to families after servicemembers’ funerals - as they are the only flags that are flown at the IGNC. “The flags will serve a greater purpose than collecting dust,” Evans suggested.

Troop 64 also collects worn-out flags that are ready to be retired. The flags will be burned and placed in IGNC graves before deceased servicemembers are buried.

“They’re in desperate need (of flags),” Evans said. “They’re opening a whole new section of the cemetery.”

Proceeds from Breakfast With Santa will support Scouting activities, including monthly camping events. The troop is planning a high adventure trip to Canada’s Northern Tier in summer 2020. Multiple days of canoeing in Ontario will constitute the trip.

Troop 64 currently has 25 members, and new members ages 11 to 18 are always welcome. The troop meets at Salem UCC every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Railway Society Plans Open Houses The Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host open houses at the Christiana freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Sundays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enjoy a leisurely tour of the 1882 freight station decorated for the holidays. Admission is free and open to the public.

There will be a variety of railroad artifacts on display, as well as numerous photograph boards displaying pictures of local Conestoga Traction trolleys of a bygone era, restoration of the 1882 freight station by the Lancaster Chapter of the NRHS, local early construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad, railroad bridges and more.

An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station

at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952.

Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme.

The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station. The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the Conrail engines.

Only two cabooses of 20 in the N7E class are believed to have been outfitted with a large, rather than small, logo. A chapter volunteer will give additional informative facts about the caboose and the Amtrak mainline that runs through Christiana.

Glenn Kendig will operate his model Ogauge trains on the second floor of the freight station. The NRHS chapter will

have a sales table offering items for sale, including railroad themed books, prints, afghan blankets, a wood caboose, freight station cutouts and other items.

Light refreshment will be available.

Lancaster Chapter NRHS is a nonprofit organization with monthly meetings held at the Christiana freight station or other local railroad-related sites. The Lancaster chapter is composed of a sociable group of men and women interested in the education and preservation of railroad history.

New numbers in this year’s show will include “Where Are You Christmas?” and “Hip-Hop Holidays.” Among the more than 20 dance numbers to be performed by nearly 40 dancers will be “Jingle Bell Rock,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and “Snow.”

Other dance numbers that will be featured this year will include “Mele Kalikimaka,” “Trepak,” and “Hot Chocolate.” As in the past, “Mele Kalikimaka” will include a special appearance by some guest dancers. Both “Trepak” and “Hot Chocolate” will be tap numbers.

Dance styles will include tap, jazz, modern, ballet, hip-hop, and Rockettestyle kicklines. Santa Claus will visit from 5 to 6 p.m., and Make-A-Wish family members will speak at the event.

Interspersed between the dance numbers will be vocal performances by Cathy Cruz, Michelle McGovern, Amy Fennimore, and LaLaLuna, a women’s choir. Kalinowski has also lined up a local funnyman to take part this year.

“We will have ‘Holiday Hilarity’ with comedian Jonathan Burns,” she said.

The show is the second-largest county contributor to Make-A-Wish, bested only by the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.

Kalinowski estimates that more than 130 dancers have taken part over the years the show has been produced.

Event Raises Funds For Off The Streets Lancaster

HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a check for $35,000 to Off the Streets Lancaster. The funds represent the proceeds from the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk.

HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books.

Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets� and into permanent housing.

After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to present Off the Streets Lancaster volunteers and board members with a check for $35,000. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the event - topping the previous record by $15,000.

OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a sustainable source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing: a security deposit and basic furniture. Since originating in Lancaster

County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has helped more than 2,500 men, women and children.

Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, noted that the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help 49 families with income who are experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County.

She reported that requests for help increased 38% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019.

Church Plans Open House, Caroling Event Christ Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will hold an open house and caroling event on First Friday, Dec. 6. The open house will run from 6 to 8 p.m., with caroling from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

The Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA) invites the public to its December concert. The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village.

WYPA is one of the student organizations sponsored by the Musical Art Society and is made up of outstanding young classical musicians who are preparing for competitions, auditions, and other solo performances. The group meets monthly, sharing upper-level historic repertoire, and presents public recitals in December, April, and June.

On Dec. 8, members will perform piano and violin works by Bach, Handel, Chopin, Debussy, and Khachaturian, as well as a piano concerto by Mozart. The program will also include siblings Faith, Charity, and Clayton Martin performing on harpsichord, harp, and cello. They will perform historic and Christmas music in period dress. The trio is also providing music at historic sites this Christmas season, including the Ephrata Cloister, Landis Valley Museum, and Pennsbury Manor.

Mount Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will present a number of events during the holiday season.

The Holiday Interactive Dinner Theater will present the annual performances inside Victorian Mount Hope Mansion. UDS Gift Wrap Volunteers Sought St. Edward’s Sets Cookie Sale The 15th annual St. Edward’s cookie sale will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Cookies will be available from 8 a.m. until sold out.

More than 60 varieties of cookies will be sold deli-style by the pound. Shoppers may choose their selection to enjoy and share over the holiday season. All boxes will be supplied.

The church has also added a Christmas crafts corner, which will offer small crafts for gift-giving. A continental breakfast, featuring breakfast items and beverages for a per-person fee, will be offered in a cafestyle setting with holiday music.

The cookie sale benefits ministries that assist people in need, such as local food

banks, COBYS, and addiction groups.

During the holiday season, St. Edward’s participates in the Jesse Tree Project, which provides holiday gifts and spirit to those children in need in the Lancaster area. The church will deliver gifts and warm clothing to more than 50 children this year. St. Edward’s also participates in gathering and delivering food to the Hempfield Area Food Bank each month, and its knitting ministry provides prayer shawls to those who need comfort in times of illness or crisis.
