A Community Christmas Run By Ann Mead Ash
For 2019, the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) cross-country team’s booster club has decided to make a few changes to the annual 5K/Ugly Sweater Run. “We want to make it more community and family focused this year,” said assistant junior high coach, booster club member, and race organizer Michael Phillips. “We plan to have hot chocolate and cider and hot soup afterward for participants,” he added, noting that a disc jockey will play Christmas music and an award will be given to the runner wearing the ugliest Christmas sweater. This year’s fundraiser 5K race will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 10 a.m. at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. A 1-mile fun run for youths will be held at 10:45 a.m. There are fees to take part
in the 5K and the fun run. Awards for 5K participants will be presented at 11 a.m. According to Phillips, there will be changes in this year’s route. “This will be a brand new course at Landis Run Intermediate School designated just for the Ugly Sweater Run,” said Phillips, who added that the run will start and finish at the school. The course will be entirely on grass and dirt, making it a true crosscountry course. “It’s a rolling course,” said Phillips, who added that the course is appropriate for beginning runners. “It will be well marked,” he said. In the spirit of making the run a family event, Phillips noted that those wishing to cheer on a friend or loved one traversing the course will have that opportunity. “We have made it more spectator friendly, so there will be multiple times you can see the 5K and one-mile runners from one particular spot,” he said. About a year ago, Dona Fisher, founder of Friendship Foundation and the Change of Pace Bible studies, received a Christmas card from a neighbor that featured a painting by Liz Hess. The painting captivated Fisher. “The painting ... is of all the world bowing down to the Christ child,” said Fisher, who went on to share that the card depicts people representing countries from all over the world who are dressed in the colorful clothing of their native land. The card inspired Fisher to ask Hess if she would tell her story at an event. “(The painting was) what really stirred me to ask her,” recalled Fisher. “I was moved by that, and I picked up the phone and called her shop.” See Christmas Brunch pg 5

All of our schools honored this Veterans Day in their own unique way. Some of our schools hosted a special ceremony and invited relatives of our students and staff into the schools; some schools created Walls of Honors to provide students the opportunity to personally recognize a veteran close to them. Our social studies classes had individual class discussions on the importance of this day. The high school invited veterans from nearby retirement communities, as well as relatives of our students, to join them in a special ceremony honoring all the branches of the military. Pictured here is Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) Michael Oles who visited the Neff Elementary third grade classes. While in the USAF, he worked on the Apollo Moonshot Program, programs for remote control helicopters (the forerunner of today’s drone technology) and finally the C5-B Galaxy transport jet. On Veterans Day, he introduced concepts of Aerodynamics to the third grade math classes with a practical application using a leaf blower and a playground ball to demonstrate various forces. We thank him, and all veterans who visited our schools, for their service!

The race, which will be professionally chip timed by Pretzel City Sports, is open to individuals from all over the county and beyond, and cash prizes will be awarded to top overall male and female winners. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each of seven age groups. A walker division will also be available. The team will again help a nonprofit organization as part of the 5K. This year, Power Packs Project will be the recipient. “We want to support a community organization that helps local people,” explained Phillips. “We will have a protein drive.” A collection box will be available at this year’s race for those who would like to donate canned goods such as chicken and tuna or peanut butter. Last year, 115 runners took part in the race, which raised $5,000. Phillips hopes to top 200 runners and raise another $5,000. The booster club has had a long-term goal of raising money for a timing system for the high school meets, and Phillips believes that a successful Ugly Sweater Run this year will make that dream come true. Funds raised are also used to purchase T-shirts, hold preseason team-building outings, honor senior runners, host the end-of-theyear banquet, and bring in motivational speakers. “There are so many ways we can support the athletes,” said Phillips. “They’re a great group of (students).”

We have fun together,” he said. He noted that recently the wife of one singer noticed a change in her husband when practice ended. “She said that he had been very cantankerous when he came in to sing,” recalled Clair, who added that the woman said her husband’s mood was much improved at the end. “It was like turning a page,” said Clair. In addition to Clair, Hoover, and Yingling, the Sing for the Moment organizing committee includes Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program; Deb Laws-Landis of Landis Homes; pianist Sandy Smoker; Ann Fulmer; and Donna Becker. “We have had standing room-only crowds each time (we have held a concert),” said Clair of the fall 2018 and spring 2019 events, which he added are often emotional for members of the audience. “There are a lot of tears shed when (relatives) see their family members engaged (and singing).” Individuals who would like more information about the concert or choir participation may call 717-568-2595, ext. 1100, or email cyingling@alz.org. Hoover asked Clair Leaman, conductor of the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs at Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster and in Chester County, to work with the group, and Sing for the Moment held its first holiday concert in December 2018. This year’s concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. The first part of the vocal concert will include a variety of Christmas favorites, followed by a performance by the St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland handbell choir under the direction of Clair’s wife, Charlene. The final segment of the vocal concert will feature a number of songs from “The Sound of Music.” Several vocalists will be spotlighted during the concert, including Shelby Swartley and David Harnish on “The Holly and the Ivy” and Bernie Linn on “O Holy Night.” Kristen Albert will be the featured vocalist on “The Sound of Music,” and Lois Good will be in the spotlight for “Do-Re-Mi.” Carl Good will be the vocalist on “Edelweiss.” Other familiar tunes in the presentation will include “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “I Saw Three Ships,” and “What Child Is This?” The nearly 50 choir members begin one-hour weekly rehearsals eight weeks prior to the concert. Clair creates a song book that includes all the song lyrics in large print with the pages decorated with

Christmas Brunch from pg 1 Hess agreed to be a speaker at the event that Fisher calls “A Creative and Colorful Christmas Brunch.” The meal for women, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Eden Resort Courtyard, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, will feature a buffet meal and cookies shaped like red umbrellas to honor Hess’ use of the colorful parasol in her paintings. Hess is a well-known, award-winning Lancaster artist who began life in Honduras, Central America, as the child of missionary parents. She grew up in Lancaster, and she later became a missionary herself, serving in Lapland, Finland. Hess now has a shop in Lancaster’s Gallery Row. She travels abroad yearly to paint on location. Fisher is especially looking forward to hearing Hess talk about the source of her imaginative work. “Artists have so much creativity that comes from their heart and their soul,” she said. “It starts
somewhere within.” She looks forward to hearing Hess’ insights at the brunch. Guests will have the opportunity to hear about how Hess draws inspiration from worshipping the Master Painter, who has filled the Earth with form, color, and pattern. On the menu for the brunch will be quiche, fresh fruit, pastries, orange juice, and coffee. The idea to return the event to a brunch format for women after a time of not holding a brunch was also inspired by the holidays. “I hadn’t held a brunch in a little while, and, you know, there’s a world out there that needs peace and joy,” said Fisher. “(So I decided) to have a fun brunch with women and invite someone in that we highly respect and honor in this town.” There is a cost to attend the brunch. MCCL Sets Holiday Concerts The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will present its Christmas Concert Series. The 150-voice choir will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. Audiences will be treated to a Gospelinfused program of music from around the world and across time featuring soprano Sherrie Strange Pratt of New York City. The program will include selections such as Caldwell and Ivory’s “Go Where I Send Thee,� Pietro Yon’s “Gesu Bambino,� and
Andrew Peterson’s “Is He Worthy?� arranged by Dan Forrest, as well as familiar carols. Singers are in grades two through 12 and represent a variety of schools, churches, and communities in and near Lancaster. For more than 30 years, Pratt has gained recognition and acclaim throughout New York City as a solo performer. Embraced by the Mennonite World Conference, she was the special soloist at several world conferences. As featured soloist, Pratt has performed with the Boys Choir of Harlem. She has starred as Mary in the People’s Place production of the Nativity, was a featured performer at the 100-year anniversary celebration of the Mennonite Historical Society in 2011, and

Church, Funeral Home To Host Blue Christmas Service invited its neighbors who celebrate all faiths and may be experiencing a time of loss or grief to gather together for a time of remembrance and healing. DeBord Snyder Funeral Home began hosting a similar service of remembrance at its facility in 2017, and the service has since outgrown its venue. DeBord Snyder Funeral Home owner Jeremy R. DeBord noted that the funeral home and the church have a strong relationship, dating back to when his greatgrandfather owned the funeral home. All those who attend Blue Christmas are invited to bring a memento of their grief to share during the service. Families that have lost a loved one and are planning to attend are encouraged to register in advance so that the person may be recognized and so that family members may be presented with an ornament in remembrance, provided by DeBord Snyder. Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.
Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Orange St., Lancaster. Guests are welcome to stay after the program for soup and refreshments. According to the Rev. Dan Snyder, transitional lead pastor of First Presbyterian Church, this is the first year that the church and the funeral home are partnering to host the service. Its purpose is to offer caring fellowship and quiet worship in a contemplative, candlelit setting. The service will recognize each person’s personal beliefs, acknowledge their grief, and embrace hope. Those experiencing the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or a job are invited. Jordan E. Lenick, licensed funeral director at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, shared that the holidays can feel overwhelming for those who have experienced a loss and that the service will offer a place where families may reflect and remember their loved ones in ways that are meaningful to them. Food Tour Set As Part Of GTGH Fair Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster and Lancaster Fellow Foodies will present the Giving Hope Food Tour as part of the 12th annual GTGH Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Ticket holders will be able to taste many dishes from eight unique food businesses: Lancaster County Stroopie Company, Upohar Ethnic Cuisines, Culinary Services by Chef Oliver, Isabelle Cuisine, Grape Leaf Café, Walk-O Taco, Reunion Food Truck, and Xulbo Bridge Food Stands. Each food tour attendee will receive a stamp card that will direct them to the participating food booths. At each stand, a
volunteer or the business owner will share information about the food and food business. Participants may enjoy the food tour at their own pace while completing holiday shopping at the fair. Tickets are required and may be purchased in advance at a discount or for a higher price on the day of the event while available. To purchase tickets in advance, readers may search for “Giving Hope Food Tour” on Facebook or Eventbrite. The gift fair aims to offer a way to find meaningful and unique gifts while supporting more than 40 causes, such as fair trade and ethical companies. Individuals will have the option of making charitable gift donations to the on-site nonprofits in honor of loved ones, with
each gift including a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Additionally, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. Children will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights, and those who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights.
