Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend.

n order to keep runners, volunteers, and spectators safe, the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) cross-country team booster club has decided to hold its annual Ugly Sweater XC 5K Run and Walk as a virtual event for 2020. A flyer about the race reads “We are doing our best to keep this a family fun event and great kickoff for the holiday season.”

Those wishing to register may visit www.lancastercounty xc5k.com by midnight on Thursday, Dec. 3. Registrants will receive a drawstring race bag, a souvenir race bib, and a handmade ornament while supplies last. One ornament will be distributed per family. Individuals who have already registered, may sign up for the virtual race at the aforementioned website. Those who have registered, but wish to opt out may

donate their registration fee to the organization rather than receive the race bag and ornament.

Packet pickup for the race will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Overlook Activities Center in Overlook Park, 2042 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Participants can complete their 5K anytime between packet pickup and Sunday, Dec. 6, at midnight.

Prizes will still be given out. Ten ugly sweater outfit awards will

be given to runners who post a photo of themselves at the UglysweaterXC5K Facebook page prior to or after running the 5K distance. Organizers will select random winners to receive gift cards. All runners who complete 5K distance are asked to send their times to the organization via Facebook message to be entered in a drawing. Three randomly selected winners will each win a cash prize.

According to Fox, during the 2019 Journey to Bethlehem, the organization set a Saturday night attendance record. More than 19,000 people have attended over the nine years the event has been held, and organizers hope to hit 20,000 this year. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household.

Viewers can join a tour guide in real time over Zoom to traverse the festively decorated halls and rooms of the 1828 mansion while learning about the public and personal life of James Buchanan through the lens of Yuletide and traditions past. From Yuletide menus and means to how Christmastime was celebrated dur-

ing the Civil War, viewers will learn how Buchanan and his family experienced Yuletide in the mid-1800s.

For example, in the Sitting Room in Wheatland, viewers will learn about Buchanan’s time in England as minister to Great Britain. It was during the reign of Queen Victoria, who was a personal friend of Buchanan and his niece, Harriet Lane, and a time when Christmas trees surged in popularity due to the influence of Victoria’s husband and consort, Prince Albert.

Tours will last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, and viewers will be able to ask the guide questions live via Zoom’s Q&A function.

The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different.

The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers.

Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11.

Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19.

The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster.

The director would like to see audience members have a similar experience. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,� he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,� he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.�

As Cavod Theatre reached its 10th anniversary this year, the decision was made to look back to the organization’s roots and celebrate by staging a junior version of one of Cavod’s first productions - “The Music Man.� “The Music Man Jr.� will play at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Facility Dog Works Magic At Paradise Elementary Giant Announces Earlier this fall, Paradise Elementary School counselor Kelly Loder and facility dog Houdini were walking through the halls at the school when they heard one of the students who was upset. “I said, ‘How about we have a break with Houdini?’” recalled Loder. The student came out of the classroom to pet the dog. “He went back in and did well the rest of the day,” recalled Loder.

Houdini is 65 pounds of furry fun. A yellow Lab from Susquehanna Service Dogs, Houdini was born in April of 2018, and he spent his first several weeks of life with his mom and his litter mates. At eight weeks of age, he was matched with a puppy raiser, and he lived with them until February of this year. Houdini’s puppy raiser taught him basic commands, such as “sit” and “lay down,” and completed his advanced training. In June, Loder got a call that the dog she had applied for in January of 2019 was ready to meet her and prepare for his move to Paradise.

Before Houdini began

working at the school, Loder and fellow Paradise staff member Meagan Warfel attended trainings to learn how to use a clicker and the verbal and hand signals for Houdini’s different cues.

Loder explained that a facility dog is trained to respond to specific cues that will support the students. Among the cues Houdini knows are “visit,” to which he responds by resting his head in a child’s lap; “lap,” which tells him he can climb into a child’s lap to be petted; and “squish,” which tells him to lie across the stomach of a child who is lying on the floor.

“He provides pressure to help calm them,” explained Loder.

Because Loder is now Houdini’s owner, she was also taught about dog health, including first aid, how to tell if he is unwell, and how to keep him at his ideal weight.

Two other teachers’ aides from the school are now training to be handlers as well.

Loder first encountered service/facility dogs working in an educational setting while in graduate school at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. “I had a fellow counseling

student who had a service dog,” recalled Loder. Seeing the positive way the future counselors responded to a dog they were not even allowed to pet amazed Loder, and she knew she was interested in working with one in the future. Loder began working at Paradise Elementary in August of 2016. In 2018, she asked administrators about the possibility. “Our district is all about anything that is good for our learners,” said Loder, who began researching therapy dogs and facility dogs after getting the go ahead.

Her research led her to Lampeter-Strasburg School District, where she learned about facility dogs trained by Susquehanna. She was so impressed that she moved forward with an application.

Because Houdini is owned

by Loder but works at the school, the $5,000 needed to bring him to the school had to be raised by the community.

Fundraising activities included Change Wars, which raised $800 before school closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

All Giant and Martin’s stores are hosting a food drive to further stock the shelves of community hunger relief organizations. The food drive began on Nov. 27 and will run through Thursday, Dec. 3.

Customers will find a bin at each store entrance to drop off nonperishable products that will be donated to local food pantries. Customers may donate items from home or purchase the products they wish to donate in the store.

Lancaster Author Pens New Book During the shutdown in spring 2020, freelance writer Michael C. Upton took the opportunity to pen a travel guide of his home, Lancaster County. Aidan Grambau, 16, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Sept. 13. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of America’s Troop 84, based in Neffsville.

To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Aidan completed more than 21 merit badges, including badges related to camping, citizenship, first aid, personal fitness, and personal management. In addition, Aidan participated in an eight-day trip to Yosemite National Park during which he and his fellow Scouts hiked more than 60 miles in a five-day period.

ments for the rank of Eagle Scout by planning and overseeing the reconstruction of compost bins at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. His project included the clean-up and removal of an old, oversized bin, and the building of four new, more user-friendly bins.

Aidan currently serves as a junior assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 84, which meets at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church.

He is the son of Todd and Stephanie Grambau of Lititz.

Christmas spirit will be in the air during Holidays at Mount Hope. Holiday activities at the Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will include the annual Holiday Dinner Theater and the Holiday Open House.

This is the 37th year for the dinner theater, said Candace Smith, director of sales and communications for Mount Hope Estate and Winery and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The event evolved from a Charles Dickens Christmas into the interactive show it is today, held in the 19th-century mansion on site.

will look a little different than years past, it will still feature all of the holiday cheer guests expect.

“Guests will check in at the front door of the mansion and be directed to their individualparty, socially distanced tables, where they will enjoy a three-course meal as the characters move from room to room to entertain with Christmas carols and seasonal storytelling,” Smith explained.

For the Holiday Open House, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the grounds and mansion free of charge.

Smith said both events are important for Mount Hope. Although some changes will be in place this year, including limiting the number of guests allowed inside the

buildings, the spirit of the events will remain intact.

“Both the dinner theater and open house have become traditions for many of our visitors, and we look forward to providing these seasonal opportunities in a safe and merry way,” she noted. “We offer unique alternatives to modern-day holiday celebrations. Shakespeare Classic To Play At LCHS

Gift Wrapping Helpers Needed Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center in Lancaster during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities.

Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the former Sears Mall of Park City Center, 200 Park City Center, Lancaster, every day from Black Friday, Nov. 27, through Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. Over 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to staff all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours.

Individuals and groups of people age 14 or older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” had numerous reasons for choosing the classic tale of good and evil as the school’s fall play. First, because it is not copyrighted, it can be recorded and livestreamed. But perhaps just as importantly, she had a ready and willing cast. “I have a core group of students who are into Shakespeare,” she said. “They are strong actors, and we have talked about Shakespeare and how much they love Shakespeare.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the audience for the show will be limited to family and friends of the 22-member cast and four-member crew.

“We will have (the production) professionally recorded and edited,” said Wagner, who explained that the recording will then be streamed via a link. The story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, played by Xavier LeFevre, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, played by Maddi Lewis, is one of prophecy and treachery. Macbeth is under the rule of King Duncan, played

by Freddy Arnold, when he is told by three witches, played

by Caroline Erb, Sheridan Riva, and Annalise Kauffman, that he will become the king of Scotland in Duncan’s place. The prediction inspires Macbeth, with encouragement from his wife, to murder Duncan and take his throne. More murder and tyranny ensue until the mayhem is stopped by the combined forces of Scotland and England. Jacob Fertal will play Banquo, Sarah Scott will play Malcolm, and Zac Snyder will play Macduff. Stage managers are Dylan Saez and Lyla Hall.

Home Run Derby Results Posted The Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium hosted a Home Run Derby for first responders and members of the military, including veterans, on Oct. 24. The event, coordinated by the Barnstormers, raised over $3,000 for local first responder organizations.

Manheim Township Lions Club celebrated the annual White Cane Days on Oct. 16 and 17. Lions club members were stationed at Savemart in Lancaster, Knight & Day Diner on Lititz Pike, and Brewers’ Outlet in Lancaster on both days to accept contributions to benefit programs for the blind and vision-impaired. Youth members of the affiliated Manheim Township Leos Club assisted at the Savemart and Knight & Day Diner locations.

Community members were invited to contribute. Proceeds will go toward programs such as the Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge near Mount Union, which provides a summer camp experience for children and adults with special needs, including blindness; Leader Dogs for the Blind, which aims to empower people who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind with skills for a lifetime of independent travel; VisionCorps of Lancaster, to help provide life-enhancement skills by combining clinical services, education, and employment programs for people who are blind or vision impaired; and many other Manheim Township Lions Club and Pennsylvania Lions District 14-D activities.

White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States and has been celebrated on Oct. 15 of each year since 1964. This date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired.

The white cane is a symbol of blindness and a tool of independence.

The Manheim Township Lions Club is a member of the Lions Club International service club organization. Its dinner meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday evenings in September through June. The Olde Hickory Grill, 709 Olde Hickory Road, Lancaster, is its current meeting location. The club welcomes new members.
