Nearly three years ago, Case Baccio, then a Bucher Elementary third-grade student, planned his first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament. The event raised funds to send veterans to the annual Warrior Weekend to Remember, an event that honors veterans and is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals
(BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team.
About the time Case organized the fishing tournament, he began creating cards to send to veterans. When he entered fifth grade at Landis Run Intermediate School last year, Case asked his homeroom class to join him in making cards. This year, Case approached his math teacher, Kristin Buckwalter, about making cards for veterans to
distribute for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Buckwalter shared the idea with fellow teacher Richard Cavanagh. Cavanagh, who teaches social studies, invited the school’s population of 900 students to get involved.
To announce the project, around the middle of October, Cavanagh asked Case to make a video. In the video, Case introduces himself as a sixth-grade student and talks about the fishing tournament he organizes.
He notes that he makes cards for veterans each year at this time. “I said, ‘It would be great if every (student) could make a card for a veteran,’” Case recalled, adding, “It ignites a spark of hope in the people who get them.”
Cavanagh pointed out that in the video Case also told fellow students that cards “put a smile on a veteran’s face.” “We forget what (veterans) went through at times,” said Cavanagh.

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year, the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site.
Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter.
The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.
Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.
When dancer Libby Shannon Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a car accident in February, her parents, Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory. “(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”
David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligible students as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.
Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

Brethren Village Plans Christmas Bazaar
Brethren Village (BV), 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, will welcome the public to its campus for the 2022 Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Wolfe Auditorium.
The Christmas Bazaar offers handmade crafts and gifts, including wood crafts, ceramics, jewelry, and quilts created by BV residents. Additional vendors will also attend. Boxed cookies and food items will also be available for purchase. The Village Center Gift Shop and the Thrift Shop will also be open during the event selling holiday gift items.
All proceeds from the Christmas Bazaar will benefit BV’s Good Samaritan Fund, which supports the current benevolent needs of the Village and residents who may need financial assistance.
Volunteer Services takes the lead in organizing vendors for the Christmas Bazaar and ensuring the event’s success.
For more information about the Christmas Bazaar, search for “Brethren Village Retirement Community” on Facebook.
The event will offer an introduction to floorball, a noncontact sport for people of all ages that combines elements of field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, and other sports. The club will supply the equipment, including plastic hockey-type sticks, a ball similar to a Wiffle ball, and the goals; attendees should bring sneakers, shorts, and a T-shirt.
Additionally, 10 practice/game sessions will take place at The Volleyball Corner from 5 to 6 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 4 to Feb. 26, with no sessions on Christmas, New Year’s Day, and the day of the championship professional football game. Separate fees have been set per session and for a package of sessions.

Cards For Vets
By Nov. 10, approximately 600 cards had been drawn, colored, and signed.
Case’s mother, Ali Bucher, looked through the cards and admired many of them. “This little girl made a special (heart-shaped) one,” she said. “A lot of these kids put a lot of effort into these cards.”
Cavanagh explained that the students were given more than paper and crayons when they were asked to do the project. “We talked about what a veteran is and what that means and what it means to veterans to get (cards),” he said.
Case and Bucher delivered some of the cards to the Manheim VFW Post prior to Veterans Day. “A lady came up (to us) crying,” recalled Bucher. “She had just lost her nephew, and she thanked Case for what he was doing.” Bucher noted that the veter-
ans who received cards at the post were very grateful. “They couldn’t believe he did this,” she said. In addition to the Manheim Post, Bucher and Case distributed cards at the Ephrata VFW Post, and Case spoke at the Veterans Breakfast Club, which meets in Bird-in-Hand on Nov. 19. Cards were also distributed at Mission BBQ, the Veterans Court in Lancaster, and Paramount Senior Living in Maytown.
Bucher noted that the idea reaped many rewards. “It was so heartwarming,” she said. “The kids took the time to do this and Mr. Cavanagh had them take the time to show the importance of veterans. It’s something simple that anybody can do to just say, ‘thank you.’”
Cavanagh said that he plans to continue the project with Landis Run students next year.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call.
“We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The
kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”
Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Celebrating its 11th anniversary as a California-produced wine tasting store in Pennsylvania, Thorn Hill Vineyards will unveil six original oil paintings of its wine collections by artist Vitaly Borisenko at “The Art of Wine,” a reception set for Friday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Thorn Hill Tasting Room, 1945 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. Giclee prints of the paintings will be available for ordering, framed and unframed and signed by the artist.
Owner and winemaker Amy Thorn discovered USSRborn Borisenko, who has resided in Lancaster County since 2014, and commissioned the paintings of her wines. In recognition of the 33-year-old Borisenko’s Eastern European heritage, 15% of the purchase price of each giclee sold at the event will be donated to Project HOPE Crisis in Ukraine fund. The giclees measure the same as the original oils on linen, 16 by 20 inches, 20 by 16 inches, and 18 by 24 inches.

His artwork can be found in private collections around the globe. He is actively involved in the local art community and currently serves as the vice president of the Lititz Art Association.
