A New Twist On A Classic Tale MTPA To Perform “Little Women” By Ann Mead Ash
Mark and Beth Wagner, who have been directing Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA) productions for more than 30 years, put some extra effort into their search before selecting the 2019 fall play. “We read lots of adaptations of ‘Little Women,’” reported Mark, who added that they were drawn to the new Kate Hamill adaptation because of its fresh perspective. Beth noted that Hamill has told an interviewer, “This is not your grandmother’s ‘Little Women.’” “We hope (attendees) will come with an open mind and hear this classic story told with a modern twist,” said Beth. The Wagners believe Manheim Township is among the first high
schools to stage this version of “Little Women,” which premiered in New York in June. MTPA will present the play in the auditorium at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 21, 22, and 23, at 7:30 p.m. “Little Women,” based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name, is set in Massachusetts during the Civil War. It is the story of how the four March sisters and their mother persevere while their father is engaged in battle away from home. Jo, played by Yasmin Nicholas, is the second to the oldest of the sisters, who also include Meg, played by Dahlia Wolfe; Beth, played by Audrey Pavlica; and Amy, played by Kristen Bennett. An aspiring novelist, Jo struggles to find her voice and stay true to herself while coming of age in the Civil War era. See “Little Women” pg 2
