ancaster County’s economy is driven by small, local businesses. According to data from EDC Lancaster County, the county is home to more than 13,000 businesses, 97% of which have fewer than 100 employees. “Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy,” said Justin Johnson, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce’s director of communications and marketing. “When you’re walking down the street, it’s much easier to find small businesses than franchises. Some of these local businesses are becoming franchises themselves. We’re proud of the way that the Lancaster County community supports small businesses.” What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Before making holiday shopping lists, visit local stores and base gift ideas on items they have in stock. Chances are those gifts will be oneof-a-kind. Gifts purchased from local stores are also likely to feature a local flair, as independent businesses tend to offer products and services that are reflective of the customers and the community they serve. As Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday approach, marking the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, keep an eye out for sales on local social media. Research sales and inventories of local businesses you want to support so you’re ready to go once the sales launch. One great way to experience local retailers is to shop in person. This method allows shoppers to get a feel for an item, size it up, and even inspect its quality prior to purchasing it. And, as they browse, shoppers may uncover

Consider a gift card to a local business, restaurant, or smaller food merchant so your loved ones can splurge on themselves and possibly discover a new favorite location. Additionally, subscriptions to small businesses such as health clubs and massage therapy services can be the gift that keeps on giving for recipients,

providing ongoing benefits to the business, as well. Purchasing gifts and gift cards isn’t the only way to provide support to local businesses during this festive season. While you’re shopping retailers, consider dining out at local eateries, whether that means trying a new venue or patronizing an old favorite. Holiday meals and gatherings can also be catered by area restaurants, which provides

the double benefit of simplifying the hosts’ to-do lists while supporting the local economy. “This is an important time of the year for small businesses,” said Johnson. “I’ve talked with businesses, and that’s when they get the majority of their sales. It’s what they rely on to make them sustainable throughout the year. This is their time to really generate that revenue.”

Volunteers play a vital role in the inner workings of our society. Without them, many of the programs we enjoy wouldn’t exist. Manheim Township municipal government is currently asking local residents to help make the locale a better place to live. “Manheim Township is where they live,” said Donna DiMeo, Manheim Township’s board of commissioners president. “It’s ‘How do you want to see Township grow?’ But volunteering is also about meeting people in the community. It’s stretching the boundaries of what you know and who you know. It’s giving back.” Manheim Township is seeking volunteers to serve in groups like the recreation and park planning department, the library board, the planning commission, the zoning hearing board, the sustainability committee, the ad committee, the vacancy board, the pathways committee, the senior committee and the pickleball committee. Most of those groups meet a handful of times a year, and volunteer terms can last for a period of one or two years. “We want to reach more people and make them more aware,” said DiMeo. “It’s a chance to have a say. You’re making a difference. There’s just so much going on that people don’t know about. Maker’s Market planned in Leola “This will be the ninth (craft show),” said Kathy Geltz, one of the organizers of the annual Leola United Methodist Church Maker’s Market, who noted that the name was changed to recognize the work of the many creative vendors who take part. Food items that will be offered for purchase will include sub sandwiches and a variety of baked goods. Last year, market organizers offered a free make-andtake craft activity. The little

According to Geltz, Rise Against Hunger targets remote communities where hunger pockets exist. The church will need to raise $4,000 to take part in the

event. “Rise recognizes that hunger will not end without creating a global movement,” Geltz quoted from the organization’s literature. “We are hoping to raise enough to pack bags next fall,” she added. It’s not about what you’re qualified to do. If you have thoughts, you’re quali-

fied. It’s a collaboration of people.” “These boards and committees are apolitical,” added DiMeo. DiMeo noted that there continues to be volunteer opportunities everywhere. “There’s always a need. You find it everywhere. ... I think (organizations) need help,” said DiMeo. “The best volunteers do their best jobs when they’re passionate about something. MU to host the Blue Barrel Show The Arts at Millersville University (MU) will present BAM Percussion’s Blue Barrel Show on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center on the Millersville University campus. During the Family Fun Fest event, children and adutls alike will be able to enjoy the art of comedy-percussion. From beginning to end, the master musicians of BAM will entertain the audience with powerful rhythms and funny sketches. The BAM characters speak a unique language BAMspeech, spoken only by them, but understood by everyone. For 20 years, BAM Percussion has performed in more than 30 countries, making everybody laugh and feel good in their own language.
