LCHS Holds Homecoming BY ANN MEAD ASH

On Oct. 16, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) held its annual homecoming celebration. The 2020 homecoming queen, Daica Perez, was crowned by 2019 queen Kat Sahd during halftime of the varsity football game against Juniata High School. The 10 LCHS homecoming queen candidates were Elizabeth Bomberger, Lauren Brommer, Ella Cassidy, Joanne Cybulski, Cecilia Deel, Gabrielle Kambourgolos, Raina McAnally, Erin Mohr, Daica Perez,

and Sheridan Riva. Elizabeth is the daughter of Steve and Cindy Bomberger of Lancaster. At school, Elizabeth is a member of National Honor Society (NHS), Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS), Student Ambassadors, Respect Life Club, Garden Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Aevidum, Link Crew, MiniTHON, Fellowship Committee, and Women in Business. She plays lacrosse and runs cross-country. Outside school, she is an altar server at Sacred Heart Church. After graduation, she plans to attend college. See LCHS Homecoming pg 2

“She Kills Monsters” To Play At MTHS BY ANN MEAD ASH

ristel Kennedy, director of the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) production of Virtual Realms’ edition of “She Kills Monsters,” said she is pleased with the effort the cast of 12 is putting into rehearsing for the show. “The students are working really hard,” she said. “There is something about saying, ‘We know this won’t be canceled’ that makes them work harder for it.” Coming off the cancellation of “Mamma Mia!” in the spring due to COVID-19 restrictions, Kennedy chose the play knowing that it was written for electronic production. “So (students) go home each afternoon and rehearse from their bedrooms or their living rooms,” said Kennedy. “We are running scenes

played by Robert Forrester; The Great Mage, Steve, played by Michael Oster; Evil Tina, played by Vivienne Salfrank, and Evil Gabbi and Farrah the Faerie, played by Megan Norman. The show will be presented virtually on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 19, 20, and 21, at 7 p.m. The show, which will run for 90-minutes with no intermission, is considered PG-13 due to language and themes. One reason Kennedy chose the play is because of the timeliness of the story. “D&D is really popular right now,” she said, noting that most of the characters in the show have both real-life and D&D personas. “Our costumer is having so much fun designing all these costumes,” said Kennedy. Directing a virtual play means working with technology that creates different scenarios from stage

Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a

Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in See Remembering pg 3

25 years. “It’s great to be part of something that people have put a lot of passion and energy into for many years.” Schedler, who served the Naaman Center in Elizabethtown for 10 years, lastly as executive director, applied for the position last spring. “I had a great experience with the search committee, and when I was offered the position, I enthusiastically accepted,” said Schedler. Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. A Central Pennsylvania native, he attended Penn State University for his bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his Master of Social Work at Temple

He is involved with the Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and GOAL Project. While working at the Naaman Center, Schedler helped lead the effort to join that organization with Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge. Schedler had heard about the reputation of the Samaritan Center and its positive effect on the community before considering joining the team. “The impact Samaritan has in this region is significant,” he said. “I was aware of the good work they have been doing for many years.” The Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, began in 1987 with a mission to

foster hope and healing through professional counseling, consultation, and education. The organization subsidizes fees for individuals, families, and children in need and provides quality programming on mental health issues. “It’s important to understand that Samaritan does more than just counseling,” said Schedler, who noted that the organization provides consulting services, as well as TeenHope, a mental health screening program that assesses depression and suicide risk of students in Lancaster County middle and high schools. When applying, Schedler felt the multifaceted center might be a good fit for him. “Something that attracted me to the organization is that they were having impact in multiple ways,” he said. “We want to continue to look for ways to
