Ugly Sweater 5K To Go Live Again For 2021 BY ANN MEAD ASH
fter the 2020 Ugly Sweater 5K became a virtual race due to COVID-19 restrictions, Manheim Township assistant junior high cross-country coach, booster club member, and race organizer Michael Phillips is looking forward to offering a 5K that is more like the one that was held in 2019. “We will have post-race festivities to make it more of an experience and not just a race,” said Phillips, who noted that two years ago, hot soup and hot chocolate were offered. “That was really well received. We are looking to do that again this year.” This year’s annual Ugly Sweater 5K will be held at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 4, starting at 10 a.m. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to sign up at www.lancastercountyxc5k.com by Wednesday, Dec. 1. People who register by Wednesday, Nov. 17, will receive a long-sleeved cotton

shirt, race bag, souvenir bib, and homemade ornament. Those who register after that date will receive the aforementioned items while supplies last. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 8 a.m. in the Landis Run Intermediate School cafeteria. Ugly Christmas sweaters, for which the run is named, will be judged at the event. “We had a great time with that last year when people sent in pictures,” said Phillips, who added that he looks forward to seeing 10 ugly sweater outfit awards given out this year. “We have a committee, and (the members) are kind of like secret shoppers (who judge) the sweaters,” he said, noting that the winners will receive gift cards. According to Phillips, the course, which will start near Landis Run, is a true cross-country course. “It’s on grass and dirt, and it covers portions of the high school course,” he said. “It is a very spectator-friendly (course) because this is family centered.”

Dean Sauder, director of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) play, has been waiting many years to stage “Scapino!” This fall, he knew the time had come. “I picked it because it’s a comedy, and the audience needs to laugh,” said Sauder. According to Alice Pinto, president of the Manheim Township Fire Rescue Foundation, the idea for starting an organization to aid Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR) firefighters in need of equipment or other funding has been around for a while. “When the three firehouses that were independently volunteer could no longer be independent, we had some money left,” explained Pinto. “We thought we should use (the funds) for the fire service, and we started the foundation.”

The cross-country team will again help a nonprofit organization as part of the 5K. This year, Power Packs Project will be the recipient. A collection box will be available at this year’s race for those who would like to donate goods such as canned chicken and tuna or peanut butter. In 2019, about 230 runners took part, and the race raised $6,000. At the time, the booster club was working to purchase a timing system, which will be used for this year’s race. Phillips would like to see comparable numbers

this year. “If we can get more than 200 (runners), I will feel we rebounded,” he said. Funds raised will be used to purchase T-shirts, honor senior runners, host the end-of-the-year banquet, and bring in motivational speakers. “We are really looking to create team-building opportunities (for the students),” said Phillips. “That’s the focus with the funding to put it back into the kids.” The Manheim Township junior high cross-country team has about 80 students, and the high school team has more than 50 taking part.

ODC Receives $10,000 Grant
The Friends of Lancaster Public Library’s Baubles & Bling Sale will take place on the second floor of the Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster, on Thursday, Nov. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will feature a wide selection of costume, fine, and vintage jewelry pieces along with an assortment of women’s fashion scarves and handbags. The sale will provide an opportunity to shop gently used items. The Friends will also offer bling bags for a set price each filled with miscel-
laneous pieces of jewelry that are perfect for recycling, upcycling, and repurposing. COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Face masks that cover the nose and mouth must be worn at all times. The sale is limited to 25 shoppers at a time to allow for social distancing inside the event space. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the library and play a vital role in the operating budget for Lancaster Public Library. Cash, credit cards, and checks will be accepted. Sacred Music Concert Posted First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host “Abundant Blessings,” a 30-minute concert of sacred music, on First Friday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. The concert will feature resident organist Larry Hershey at the console of the vintage 1958 analog

Giant Launches Delivery Service The Giant Company together with Instacart, an online grocery platform, recently announced the launch of Giant Instant Delivery and Martin’s Instant Delivery, providing customers with convenience delivery chainwide. In addition, the foundation will purchase furniture for the new Richmond Square station so that all the stations will be similarly equipped. As the foundation works to define its role, Pinto noted that she is thankful for the board members who have been at work for the organization for some time. “Without them, we would not be nearly as far along as we are,” she said. “They know what to do, and they have done (it), and we appreciate them and their assistance and dedication.” Magill added that the board is also thankful for community support. “We are grateful,” he said. “Out of the blue, we continue to get contributions, which means people are still thinking about supporting the fire company.” The foundation mailing address is 1840 Municipal Drive, Lancaster. The roots of the idea date back more than a decade to the time when the three stations - Neffsville Station (now No. 207), Southern Station on Fruitville Pike (now No. 201), and Eden Station on New Holland Pike (now No. 204) - were brought together under Manheim Township. However, it is only in the last few years that the drive to become a 501(c)(3) charitable organization resulted in the newly created foundation. In addition to Pinto, board members currently are vice president Renny Magill, secretary Krista Murphy-Denlinger, treasurer Melissa Kneasel, MTFR liaison Adrian Borry, and members at large Ed Berilla and Megan Tomsheck. Magill noted that the organization may be asked to help fire companies provide educational resources to the community, among other financial requests. “We fill a gap where other sources of funding do not exist,” he explained. “We are a very local partner to them.” “We support all three stations when they have no other means of support,” added Pinto, who said that the MTFR liaison will attend meetings and make presentations about fire company needs. The family-friendly play by Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale will be staged in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 4, 5, and 6, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. Audience members will be required to wear masks. The action takes place in a café on the waterfront, where Scapino, played by
Jazmyn Shanahan, strategizes to help two couples overcome parental opposition to their romances. Additional cast members include Carter Palmer as Geronte, Miranda Beidler as Argante, Kay Beidler as Sylvestro, Simeon Spurrier as Ottavio, Noah Niehans as Leandro, Aaliyah Clark as Giacinta, Kayla Risser as Zerbinetta, Ilse Ness as the nurse, Julia Fisher as Carlo, Anya Friesen as a waitress, Emma Irons as the headwaiter, Owen Esch as first waiter, and Rachal Landes as second waiter. In October, when classes
were held virtually for four days due to COVID-19 concerns, Sauder’s cast of 14 lost essential practice time. “In this show, more than any other I have ever worked with, because there’s a lot of farce and slapstick, the comic timing has to be perfect or someone could get hurt,” said Sauder, who planned Saturday makeup rehearsals for the show. Sauder noted that one of the challenges of the play has been the size of the set. “We are covering the entire stage with a dock,” said Sauder, who said the set will stretch into the audience, covering the first three pews. Not only will the stage
bring the action closer to the audience, but during the play, members of the cast will enter the aisles, talking to the theatergoers and asking how they are enjoying the show. A final challenge has been adapting the script to modern sensitivities regarding how men treat women, which Sauder said has given him a lot of teachable moments about changes in what is culturally acceptable. Ceremony Planned At Veterans Memorial At Greenwood A Veterans Day wreath laying and ceremony will take place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Greenwood Cemetery, South Queen Street, Lancaster, on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. The event, to be held rain or shine, is sponsored by Chapter 1008 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and Associates of Lancaster. The public is invited to attend. The memorial was erected to honor the Lancaster County Vietnam veterans and one civilian who gave their lives in service to the U.S. Memories of the soldiers and civilian who are honored on the memorial will be shared during the ceremony. Family members and friends are welcome to participate. Guest senators have also indicated
they plan to attend. Chapter 1008 will also rededicate the memorial monument, which was recently restored, and dedicate a new contributor’s stone, honoring Charles Snyder Funeral Home, Dennis Funk & Sons, Rohrer’s Concrete, and Sauder Bros. for their help in restoring the monument. The memorial and grounds are maintained by Chapter 1008. Chapter 1008 meets at noon at the Pheasant Ridge Community Center, 209 Longwood Court, Lancaster, every third Wednesday of the month.
