Collection Will Aid Cancer Patients

When Megan Sauder Ralston began undergoing treatment for breast cancer in 2016 at the age of 29, she noticed that young women like herself with the disease did not receive the support older women did. “Some insurance companies’ coverage required you to be 40 for some benefits,” said Megan’s sister Jacquelyn Iannello, who founded Thrive and Grit, an organization that supports cancer patients in a number of ways.

Megan, who was raised in Manheim Township and attended Lancaster Mennonite School, was living in Virginia when she was first diagnosed with pregnancy-related breast cancer before her son was a year old. She received treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas and at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute before succumbing to the disease in November of 2018. Before she died, she began Megan’s Fund, which helps give women under age 40 access to mammograms and other early detection tools and helps with financial issues.

While Megan was undergoing treatment in Charlottesville, Va., where she lived when she was first diagnosed, she received a goodie bag. “She said, ‘We could do that,’” recalled Jacquelyn, a teacher at St. Peter’s Preschool, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. Working with Heather Cramer, director of the preschool, Jacquelyn is collecting items to fill the Pink Packages that Thrive and Grit now distributes regularly at the Cancer Institute - sometimes giving out as many as 600 in a month. Items currently being accepted at the preschool include lip balm, soft socks, journals, granola bars, candy, gum, hand soap, hand lotions, and hand sanitizer. Gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, and encouraging books will also be accepted.

In addition, Thrive and Grit is holding a soup sale through the end of November. Food items available for sale are squash soup, chili, broccoli cheese soup, and blueberry and strawberry bread. Individuals who would like to purchase food items may text 717-413-4757 or email thriveandgrit@gmail.com. Soup is sold by the quart with croutons,

and bread is sold in mini loaves. Funds raised will be donated to metastatic breast cancer research and to support those battling the disease.

Megan’s mother, Bonnie Sauder, noted that her other daughter, Candi Sauder King, and son, John Patrick Sauder, and other family

members are also involved in fundraising for Thrive and Grit. Bonnie said that past fundraisers have included a fall car show. She also mentioned a catered meal for the staff of the Cancer Institute that is held each December. “It was Megan’s idea to every Christmas have a thank you meal for all the

staff at Ann B. Barshinger,” said Jacquelyn, who noted that at the dinner staff members speak about new things that are happening at the Cancer Institute.

Readers who have questions about dropping items at the preschool may email Heather.cramer@stpeters lutheran.org or call 717-569-9211.

“We have so much going on here in Ephrata that we truly can create a destination,” said Joy Ashley, executive director of Mainspring of Ephrata. Ashley is looking forward to sharing the many holiday events being planned in Ephrata with area residents from all around the county.

Mr. Suit Records, 118 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, announced via Instagram on Oct. 3 that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year. The news was met by a chorus of cries from the community, with responses by everyone from now-internationally famous rockers to those who became acquainted with the store while studying in Lancaster.

The record store has operated in Lancaster for 15 years and was started by Mike Madrigale, who has run it ever since. Madrigale grew up

Township Staff, Police Set Open House

The Manheim Township Board of Commissioners, the staff at the Manheim Township Municipal Office and members of the Manheim Township Police Department invite Manheim Township residents to attend one of four upcoming open house tours in November. The purpose of the tours is to allow the public to view the facilities to understand the staff’s request for the construction of a new, combined municipal building that houses the growing needs of both

the municipal staff and the police department. Both entities have a long history of serving Manheim Township from the Manheim Township municipal building, which was constructed in 1991 at 1840 Municipal Drive, and the police station, built in 1973 at 1820 Municipal Drive.

near Allentown, where he attended Kutztown University and combed through local hole-in-the-wall shops to find additions for his record collection. He moved to Lancaster, where his brother and sister-in-law lived, in 2000.

“I was always working in record stores. When I moved to Lancaster, I ended up being in food service for a while, which was fun, but I always wanted to open my own place,” said Madrigale. He found out through his brother, who owned an art gallery downtown, that a building had opened up. With his own collection, Madrigale seized the opportunity to open a store, and Mr. Suit was born.

“There was definitely a learning curve with finding what I wanted to carry and getting enough of it at one time, but within a few years I hit my stride,” said Madrigale. Mr. Suit wasn’t the only game in town; Stan’s Records on Prince Street offered a collection of classic records, and Angry, Young & Poor

on Orange Street has been a punk’s one-stop shop for vinyl and clothing since 1995. But Mr. Suit sold records you might not find at either, having music from more contemporary artists across dozens of genres.

Over the years, Madrigale connected with the Lancaster community both through Mr. Suit and his own musical endeavors. He performed and toured as a member of the post-hardcore outfit Sadaharu, which released several albums on CI Records, and later with garagepunk three-piece High Heels. Although Madrigale met several artists through CI Records and from performing at the Chameleon Club (Michael Kuhn of NAH and 1994! and JB Brubaker of August Burns Red were among the first to react to the news of Mr. Suit’s closure), he also made an impact on hundreds of people who were either visiting Lancaster for the first time or lived locally and needed a certain record.

impact on anyone,” said Madrigale. “I live a couple blocks away and have been here for years. (Mr. Suit) is something for everybody and for the community.” From the parents who needed records for their kids’ ’50s-themed prom to teenagers in the suburbs who trekked into town to find a new record on the weekends, Madrigale and his shop made an impact on many people’s lives.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a 15year anniversary event for Mr. Suit will be held at Zoetropolis Cinema

Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The event will feature live music and celebrate the legacy of Madrigale’s shop, which will continue to sell records during its regular hours until Saturday, Dec. 31. More details on the event will be announced on Mr. Suit’s Instagram, @mrsuitrecords, closer to its date.

So, stop in and grab one last record from Mr. Suit, and in Madrigale’s own words, “Let’s make the rest of the year less of a funeral and more of a party, OK?”
