In late 2016 when TTC/Potter’s House approached leaders at Conestoga Church of the Brethren about the possibility of holding a two-part educational program concerning the heroin epidemic in Lancaster County, church members responded. “It’s needed in the community,” said pastor Jere Cassel.

The first effort led to a second collaborative workshop in April of this year.

According to Cassel, church members then suggested a fall workshop.

Cassel met with TTC/Potter’s House ministry director Lanny Millette to discuss content. “The holiday connection was Jere’s idea,” noted Millette.

The Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) has announced the completion of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks, a first-of-its-kind home dedicated for veterans who are part of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas Veterans Court Program. A ceremony marking the completion and opening of the Barracks was held on Sept. 20 at the renovated home at 455 Fremont St., Lancaster.

Retired Maj. Gen. Eric Weller, Deputy Adjutant General - Veterans Affairs, served as the guest speaker.

Commander James Vollrath of the American Legion, Department of Pennsylvania, was also in attendance.

Ron Bradley, who officially became the lead pastor at New Life Assembly of God, has been visiting Lancaster for more than 30 years, but he never realized that he and his family, which includes his wife, Jemma, and son, Ian, would live in the county.

“Lancaster is so peaceful.

We would come here just to get away,” shared Bradley, adding that his family especially enjoyed visiting a local Christian theater on their visits.

Bradley has been to Lancaster so many times that when a fellow pastor from the area contacted him in early May about an opening at New Life, he recalled the church with the large blue dove on the side he had seen when

Ken’s Cancer Fighters To Host Craft Show PCA&D To Host Art Market, Exhibit

When the members of Ken’s Cancer Fighters, a Relay For Life team, were asked why they raise money for the American Cancer Society, co-captain Deb Jones indicated the back of their team T-shirts. There, 20 names were listed under the headings of “in memory of” and “in honor of,” up from 16 the previous year.

“We’ve lost a lot this year,” Jones remarked.

“It shows you the scope (of the reach of cancer),” said team member Nancy Yale.

“Everybody’s touched by cancer,” added Carol Allison, the other co-captain.

The members of Ken’s Cancer Fighters host fundraising events throughout the year. They participate in the East Petersburg community yard sale and host an ongoing candy sale. The team will have candy bars in flavors like sea salt caramel, almond toffee, and

chocolate mint available for purchase at its annual craft show on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Living Hope Community Church, 2823 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Also at the event, more than 25 vendors will sell a variety of products, including small tools, jewelry, antiques, yard art, fragranced wax melts, stamped goods, holiday décor, crocheted items, scarves, and more. The team will sell chili and soup by the bowl or quart, along with hot dogs, snacks, coffee, and baked goods.

Last year’s craft show brought in $2,000, contributing to the best-ever fundraising total for the team.

“This year, we’ll do better,” Yale asserted. “We’re selling a lot of chocolate. I work in a department with hungry men. That’s where my candy bars go.”

In addition to selling candy bars, Yale makes yard art that she sells at two events in the spring.

She donates all of her proceeds to

Book Discussion Group To Meet On Nov. 1 and 8, pastor Larry Leister will discuss “Growing Young: Six Essential Strategies to Help Young People Discover and Love Your Church” by Kara Powell, Jake Mulder, and Brad Griffin. Based on research with more than 250 of the nation’s leading congregations, “Growing Young” provides a strategy that churches can use to involve and retain

teenagers and young adults.

This book will end the 2018 discussions. The group will not meet in December. It will resume its schedule on Jan. 3, 10, and 17, 2019, with the film “The Same Kind of Different as Me” and the book “Workin’ Our Way Home” by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. More information may be obtained in December.

Exploring, Growing Together, a book discussion group at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., Lititz, will continue its 2018-19 series, which aims to help people explore beliefs in a safe discussion environment.

The group meets on Thursdays on the lower level from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees should use the lower-level parking lot entrance to the building.

The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will hold two special events during First Friday in Lancaster on Nov. 2.

The second PCA&D Art Market and a joint photography exhibition by LUX: Student Professional Organization themed “Open Eyes: A Relationship to Place!” will be offered from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The market will be set up in the atrium, and the exhibition will be displayed in the Photography Hallway.

As part of the Art Market, PCA&D’s illustration, fine art, design, and photography students have gathered original and handmade work to sell. The market is hosted by the PCA&D American Institution of Graphic Arts (AIGA) but is completely student-run. The project leaders are Karla Daher Urgiles, Class of 2019, senior illustrator, and Joseph Bend, Class of 2019, graphic design senior.

The market is designed to help students enter the realm of selling their work to the public, as well as self-promotion, pricing artwork, and more.

The event is open to every student in the college regardless of grade or major.

Participating are Karla Daher Urgiles, Joseph Bend, Willa Hutchison, Sarah Garrett,

Community Partnership, of which the post is a part. Other local dignitaries and politicians attended, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace.

Preparation of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks project began in September 2017 when LHOP purchased a condemned and blighted house on Fremont Street from the Lancaster City Redevelopment Authority for a discounted fee. Working with veterans in the court program and community members, CAPital Workforce, a program of the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, completed the rehab work on the home.

The total cost of acquisition and rehab was nearly $100,000, and a total of $150,000 was raised through cash and in-kind contributions of labor and materials. The remainder of funds will be held in reserve to take care of future major systems repairs and replacements. The Barracks will be owned by LHOP, managed by a professional landlord, and administered within the rules of the Veterans Court program.

Resident participants will be required to pay a monthly fee while living in the house to help cover costs.

“We at LHOP are extremely proud to be a part of a project that will help our veterans get back on their feet after serving

our country,” said LHOP CEO Ray D’Agostino, himself a veteran. “We and our partners, the Veterans Court Community Partnership and CAPital Workforce, are humbled by the many in-kind and financial donors as well as those who donated their time and talents in making this project a reality.”

Veterans Court began six years ago as a way to give veterans in the criminal justice system who are charged with certain crimes individualized treatment programs based on proven national research and program models. There have been 43 graduates of the program, and 27 veterans are currently participating.

In addition to the personal benefits for veterans and their families, the community benefits as well. Notably, the Veterans Court Program is more costeffective than traditional incarceration. It costs in the five figures each year to incarcerate someone as opposed to approximately $3,100 for someone to take part in the program.

LHOP is a community benefit, charitable nonprofit organization and a certified community development financial institution in Lancaster County with a 24-year history of making a positive impact by helping people access and create fair and affordable housing. With the

For the first few decades after Christmas at Salem was launched, the members of Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, created all of the wares for sale.

“We spent all year working on them,” recalled church member Marty Sheetz. “All the tables were full.”

The volunteers are increasing in age and decreasing in number, but they are still involved with hosting the annual Christmas at Salem.

Now, however, the tables in the fellowship hall and throughout the church building are filled by vendors. The 33rd Christmas at Salem will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and vendor coordinator Eileen Shipe noted that more than 35 vendors are slated to participate in the bazaar, representing a mix of handcrafters and direct sales businesses.

Vendors will sell jewelry, ornaments, wreaths, papercrafts, clothing, pillows, Santa and Grinch scarves, used books, painted tiles, and wooden items. Boy Scout Troop 64 will have a table where attendees may register to sponsor wreaths that will be laid at veterans’ graves in December. Surprise

balls - featuring small items that are wrapped into solid paper spheres - are a new product at Christmas at Salem.

“I’ll have to take more time off (from serving that day) so I can go around and look at everything,” Sheetz remarked.

The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the piece. The piece also features call and response conversations between the different instrument families, as well as complex rhythmic patterns that fuse with the flavor of Spanish heritage.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold the second concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School, 1051 Lehigh Ave., Lancaster. Performances will take place at 3 and 8 p.m.

Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser will lead the combined forces of the Lancaster Symphony, the Keystone State Boychoir, and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff ’s “Carmina Burana.”

Guest vocalists Elizabeth Caballero, Daniel Shirley, and John Viscardi will be featured.

The program will also include John Harbison’s “Remembering Gatsby” and Oscar Navarro’s “Paconchita Overture.”

“Carmina Burana” (“Songs of Beuren”) is based on a manuscript uncovered in the monastery of Benediktbeuren in upper Bavaria in 1803. It is a collection of poems and songs in Latin, Middle-High German, and Old French, written by university students, minstrels, defrocked monks, and artists, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The works reflect a strong belief in destiny, an attitude that was a combination of medieval Christianity and ancient Greek philosophy.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, hundreds of Santa Claus doppelgangers will descend on the streets of downtown Manheim once again for the annual Santa Run and Walk 5K. Sponsored by the Manheim Lions Club, the event will feature a mostly flat course that will lead participants along Charlotte Street and through several neighborhoods, past Logan Field, and back to Market Square.

To register in advance, interested individuals may visit www.manheimlions.org. An early bird registration rate is available through Thursday, Nov. 1. Sepa-

rate registration fees have been set for adults and for youths.

Santa suits, which include a onesize-fits-most jacket, trousers, a hat, a beard, and a belt, will be available to those who register while supplies last. Youths age 14 and under will receive long-sleeve T-shirts and Santa hats. Adults may opt for a long-sleeve tech Tshirt instead of a Santa suit.

Race-day check-in and registration will be open from 6:30 to 8 a.m. at the church, and participants will step off for the race at 8:30 a.m. Chip timing and mile markers will be provided, and a water station will be positioned at the halfway point. A detailed race route map may be viewed at www.manheimlions.org, and a list of parking options will also be posted closer to the event date.

“Many participants tell us that this race is a very organized event,” remarked Lions Club member Nancy Husser, adding that plenty of volunteers are present throughout the course.

Water and snacks are supplied to runners and walkers at the finish line. A post-race awards ceremony will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and

female finishers, as well as to the top male and female finishers in various age groups.

Proceeds from the Santa Run and Walk 5K will benefit the Manheim Lions Club’s projects in the Manheim community. Participants and spectators are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy suitable for a child or teenager age 15 or under for the Toys for Tots collection led by the club.

Husser noted that the race is one of several events planned for the Christmas in Manheim weekend, set for Friday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 2. Folks are also welcome to enjoy Breakfast With Santa on Dec. 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 50 N. Main St., Manheim. A free breakfast and photo opportunities with Santa will be the highlights of

the event, along with a giveaway of hats, scarves, gloves, and school supplies.

The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will host Holiday Crossings at the Historic Manheim Railway Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 and from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 2. A gift shop, a miniature train display, giveaways, hand-roasted peanuts, and photographs with Santa will be among the offerings at Holiday Crossings. Elisabeth von Trapp is the granddaughter of Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired the movie “The Sound of

voices of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell from the open airways of Vermont radio.

Inspired by her father’s guitar playing and singing, Elisabeth began taking piano lessons when she was 8. By 16, she was playing the guitar and traveling the back roads of New England performing with her siblings at weddings, gospel meetings, town halls and county fairs.

by Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, followed by a panel discussion and a period of questions from the audience.

Mwangi said that he envisions a seminar that will address the situations that those dealing with addiction, those in recovery, and families of both face at the holidays. “The holidays are one of the most vulnerable times for people in recovery,” explained Mwangi, who noted that the celebratory spirit can actually make life more challenging. “It can be a very difficult time.”

Among the many issues that face

individuals and families dealing with addiction are a number of losses. Some may be missing friends or loved ones who have been lost to overdose. Others are grieving the loss of a marriage or relationships with children. The materialism commonly associated with the holidays can deepen problems when the resources to participate are not available. “This workshop will help to create awareness so those in recovery can be on guard,” explained Mwangi, who added that children who are without their parents due to addiction issues suffer during the holidays as well.

Practical steps for families of those people who have addictions or are in recovery include encouraging relationship but not enabling substance abuse. “The family needs to set boundaries and be supportive at the same time,” said Mwangi.

“It’s a big challenge (because) you want to say, ‘We love you and we

care and we want to be there for you,’ but the individual who is (abusing substances may) interpret that as ‘Then let me come to the house, sit around the table, and see my children.’”

The panel discussion will include four area residents who can speak to the problem from different angles. Joel Jakubowski, director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries, will represent a professional perspective, Mwangi will take the pastor’s viewpoint, and Joel Carvanal will share the perspective of someone in recovery. A fourth panelist will be representative of a family member who has walked with a loved one in recovery.

In addition to the speaker and panelists, organizers plan to have displays in the church fellowship area, including one representing GOAL (Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning) Project, featuring Compass

Mark literature.

TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and postrelease prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions.

Mwangi said that as representatives of faith-based organizations, the organizers of the event want to relay the message of the Christmas story to families dealing with addiction. “A lot of people don’t know where to turn when addiction comes,” he said. “We want to bring hope to the community during this holiday season.”

As part of Weaver’s visit to Millersville University (MU), he will join the MU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab bands, directed respectively by professors Keith Wiley and Ryan Kauffman, in Jazz at the ‘Ville - November Nostalgia on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Biemesderfer Concert Hall, located at the Winter Center, 60 W. COBYS Holds Fundraiser

The 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike took place on Sept. 9 in downtown Lititz.

The event drew more than 200 supporters and donors, and a new income record of more than $141,000 was raised for COBYS ministries.

The increase in income marked the 20th consecutive year of growth for COBYS’ signature fundraiser. Since its inception, the Bike and Hike has raised more than $1.4 million for COBYS ministries.

In addition to the walk, the event usually includes two bicycle rides and a motorcycle ride, all staged from the pavilion at the Lititz Church of the Brethren.

The rides were canceled due to a flood advisory, and the event was moved inside to the church fellowship hall.

A number of would-be riders walked instead or came to donate and pick up a T-shirt. In addition to 210 walkers, many others stopped in for fellowship and ice cream or to bid on the silent auction that ran throughout the afternoon. Total attendance was estimated at 350.

More than 100 businesses provided cash or in-kind donations of auction items, door prizes, or food and supplies.

Cash sponsorships from businesses exceeded last year’s amount by $11,000 and the previous best by $6,000. The auction generated $4,921.

Top fundraisers were Mari Cunningham of West Lampeter Township, $12,525; Floy Fitzkee, Manheim, $6,685; Londa Brandt, Manheim, $5,810; and Lucy de Perrot, Lititz, $3,900.

Four Church of the Brethren youth groups earned gym and pizza nights by raising at least $1,500. They included Little Swatara, Rehrersburg, $10,462; Mohrsville, $5,031; Mountville, $1,972; and West Green Tree, Elizabethtown, $1,556.

Motivated by Christian faith, COBYS aims to educate, support, and empower children and adults to reach their full potential.

Historical Society Students Receive Food Handling Electronic Devices Workshop Slated Plans Program To help organizations provide safe food, Penn State Extension will offer the workshop Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer’s Guide to Safe Food Handling. The workshop will be offered on Monday, Nov. 12, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Participants will learn about foodborne illness, what causes it, and preventing it; safe purchasing, preparation, storage, and service for a crowd; cleaning and sanitizing; planning a safe menu with food safety in

mind; and general guidelines for events specific to the needs of nonprofit audiences.

There is a cost for the workshop. Each organization will receive one copy of the “Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer’s Guide to Safe Food Handling” manual. Additional manuals will be available for purchase.

Teacher Michael Patten is the overseer of the program. He noted that becoming familiar with the devices will prepare students for high school, as the devices are also used at Lancaster Catholic High School.

Students in kindergarten to fifth grade will continue to use electronic tablets.

The Lancaster County Planning Commission will sponsor a group viewing of the Penn State Extension webinar “Property Law Issues Involving Public Rights, Open Space, and Access to Private Lands” on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from noon to 1:15 p.m. The webinar will take place in Room 104 at Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Theater Slates Mystery Farce Fulton Theatre will kick off the 2018-19 Ellen Arnold Groff Series with “The Mystery of Irma Vep.” Performances will take place through Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Tell Studio Theatre at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

“The Mystery of Irma Vep” was created by Charles Ludlam, who also starred in the play’s first offoff-Broadway premiere in New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1984. The original production won a Special Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award of Ensemble Performance. The show was later produced off-Broadway at the Westside Theatre, where it won several more critics’ awards.

The cast consists of two actors playing multiple roles with 35 costume changes. Chuck Ragsdale

plays the roles of Jane Twiden, Lord Edgar Hillcrest, and An Intruder. Oliver Wadsworth plays the roles of Nicodemus Underwood, Lady Enid Hillcrest, and Alcazar.

The defense allowed only two touchdowns and held Hempfield’s star running back Matt Heuston to only 20 yards rushing.

The three-pronged effort of a football team performing well on a given night also included the special teams.

“In the grand scheme of things, you want two of the three phases to be successful,” said Evans, referring to defense, offense and special teams.

“It’s always nice when all three are working. It was good to see us firing on all cylinders.

“Everything seemed to click,” Evans went on. “The guys were on track in every phase of the game. They complemented each other very well.

They were dominant because they put their minds to it.”

And what of the special teams’ contribution?

GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team had a Herculean task of taking on Cumberland Valley in the opening-round of the District Three Class 4A playoffs. The Eagles entered the playoffs as the second seed. Township was 15th.

Cumberland Valley went on to defeat Township 3-0 in Tuesday’s match at CV, improving to 14-1-1 and continuing its winning ways with a quarterfinal round victory over Exeter by the same score.

Sophomore Kyra Place broke a scoreless tie with two minutes to play in the first half, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Emily Mashinski doubled that lead seven minutes into the second half. Junior Alexa Baker capped the scoring, thus ending the Blue Streaks’ season with a 6-8-2 record.

Ali Quinn did have seven saves for Township.

CROSS COUNTRY Senior Evan Dorenkamp led a rather large pack of runners as he crossed the finish line. He was in first place in Saturday’s District Three Class-AAA Cross Country championship. Dorenkamp won the gold with a time of 16:30.7. Fellow senior Ian Miller earned 15th place

with a time of 17:06.8.

As a team, the MT boys finished seventh with 279 points in the championship meet at Big Spring.

Cedar Crest’s team won with 145 points while Warwick took second with 189 points. .

Drew Sassaman registered a time of 17:51.9 to earn 48th place in the meet. Riley Horton’s time of 18:24.5 was good for 104th. Freshman Tyler Stevens (18:32.3) finished 119th while junior Keven Perez (18:34.4) and Dieter Geib (18:48.4) came in at 122nd and 145th, respectively.

The girls’ team was 11th overall with 334 points. The winning team was Dallastown with only 115 points.

Chloe Kline (24th, 20:18.3) led the Township girls’ team with Anabelle Lapp (32nd, 20:32.7) not far behind.

Avery Ebersole also finished in the top 100, earning 76th place with a time of 21:29.2. Freshman Paige Laurence and sophomore Aurelia Huss ran together down the stretch, finishing 108th (21:56.6) and 109th (21:57.2) respectively. Emma Dieterle (112th, 21:58.9) and Kyra Dean (125th, 22:26.7) rounded out the lineup.

FIELD HOCKEY Manheim Township entered the District Three Class-AAA playoffs as the ninth seed and went on to edge Cedar Cliff 3-2 on Wednesday at Lower Dauphin. Township moved on to the field hockey quarterfinals where top-seeded Lower Dauphin, which had a first-round bye, blanked the Streaks 2-0 at Milton Hershey on Saturday afternoon.

That opening-round win featured a huge second half by the Streaks. Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Township got

on the board with Ashlyn Campagna’s goal 12:28 into the second half.

Sophia Rockwell scored the tying goal five minutes later and Julia Romano prevented overtime with a late goal.

Katie Labezius chipped in with an assist as Township out-shot Cedar Cliff 11-8.

Cat Wilson made five saves for the Streaks, with Maddie Kurtz also earning a save.

Lower Dauphin denied the MT offense any shots on goal. Wilson did make eight saves in a losing cause with Emma O’Neil scoring both goals for the Falcons (17-1-1). The Streaks’ season ends with a record of 13-9.

TENNIS Township faced Unionville in the opening round of the PIAA Class-AAA team tennis championships on Tuesday. The unbeaten Blue Streaks, who claimed the District Three crown, were eliminated by the Indians - the fourth-seeded team from District One - by a 3-2 score at Hershey Racquet Club.

GOLF The PIAA Class 3A golf championships took place at Heritage Hills Golf Club on October 22 and 23 with Shaun Fedor and Ellen Wager representing Manheim Township.

Wager finished in a four-way tie for fifth place, recording a 79 on the par-72 course. Jade Gu of Pennsbury won the girls’ championship with a score of 71.

Fedor, a senior, finished in a tie with six other golfers for 20th place, shooting a 5-over-par 77.

In Wednesday’s team championships at Heritage Hills, the Township squad finished third with 318 points, equaling Erie Cathedral Prep.

Fedor shot 71 on the day, making par 10 times. Connor Strine shot an 81 while Wager and David McNaughton both finished at 83. Graham Calhoun, a freshman, carded an 85.

BOYS’ SOCCER In what may be remembered as a classic boys’ soccer match between Palmyra and Manheim Township, the visiting Cougars upset the top-seeded Streaks in the first round of the District Three Class6A playoffs on Tuesday.

The match was intense in that each side scored twice; the game went into overtime and the Cougars (12-6-1) downed the home team 5-4 in a penalty shootout. The heartbreaking loss ended Township’s season at 13-5.

“It was one of those games where the momentum went back-and-forth, end to end,” head coach Kevin Baker stated. “We knew they would be physical. They tended to play to the level of their competition, playing well in the big games. They approached the game similar to us tactically.”

The Streaks grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to an early goal by Colton Pierson and one by Andrea DiSomma just after the midway mark of the first half. Nolan Ross assisted on both scores.

The Cougars cut the lead in half five minutes prior to halftime on T.J. Caton’s first goal of the game. He finished not only with two goals during regulation, but also one of the five in the shootout stage.

The penalty rounds began with goalie Quinn McCarty saving Palmyra’s first attempt.

“Quinn saved their first one,” Baker said. “It was one of his best games of the season. When the play is going back and forth and they’re putting a lot of pressure on you, he definitely came up big for us. Their goalie also made a couple of saves.”

Ross made one for the Streaks, who won the coin toss and chose to kick second in each round. Colton Pierson made the second shot for MT, but DiSomma’s shot in the third frame went awry. Zach Brubaker and Ayden Lee came through, making it 4-4 after the allotted five rounds.

“It went into sudden death for a sixth kicker,” Baker explained.

Mitch Dowling scored for Palmyra on that sixth penalty kick while the Streaks missed the chance to extend the sudden death to a seventh round.

Baker talked about his thoughts on the team’s achievements as well as what his post-game words were to the players.

McKenna comes to Tabor with years of experience working to mitigate poverty and promote self-sufficiency. He most recently served as chief impact/operations officer at Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County, where he previously served as director of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Prior to moving to Lancaster, McKenna was the assistant director of poverty concerns and faith connections at the Center for Community Service and Justice of Loyola University Maryland, and he was field manager/service coordinator for the No Kid Hungry Campaign. FFA Chapter Elects Officers The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) FFA Chapter held officer elections for the 2018-19 school year on Sept. 12. The 2017-18 treasurer, Caitlyn Schiewe, presided over the elections as the representative from her retiring officer team. The newly elected officer team is as follows: Erica Castetter as president, Destiney Lundy as vice president, Maya Pieters as secretary, Mya Swift as treasurer, and Chloe Masters as reporter.

LCCTC FFA members interested in running for an office completed an application and were interviewed by a nominating committee, which was a panel of three individuals involved with agriculture. These industry partners

were all members of FFA during their time in high school, and they recommended the slate of officers after the interview process. Their recommendation was then voted on and passed by LCCTC FFA members.

The chapter was scheduled to hold its first meeting of the school year on Sept. 17 to develop a program of activities and assign all of the members to committees. This year, the LCCTC FFA plans to attend several local fairs and leadership conferences. The chapter intends to hold fundraising events, participate in community service work, and plan the annual community Fun Fair at school in May. The first community service

project will be a blanket drive in memory of Schiewe’s younger brother, Zane Witmer, who passed away while the family was vacationing in Florida. New blankets may be dropped off at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. According to new blood pressure guidelines released in November that define high blood pressure beginning at 130/80, 46 percent of U.S. adults may have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood

Library System Receives Donation The Library System of Lancaster County has announced that this year Brad Rutter, alltime “Jeopardy!” champion, has donated funds that have been used to support Syndetics Unbound, which is an online catalog enhancement tool that is now available. The Lancaster County native has contributed funds for the past eight years through his Lancaster County Community Foundation donordesignated fund to benefit the public libraries in Lancaster County. The only stipulation by Rutter is that the funds he donates be used to support technology-based services that will benefit many library users throughout the county.

Syndetics Unbound catalog enhancement features include enabling library users to see the cover pictures for items such as

books, DVDs and CDs. This way, customers will know exactly what they are requesting. The Readers’ Advisory add-on service will give information such as recommendations, what books are in a series, other formats available, related titles and more details about items the library user might like to borrow.

Reading levels are now listed by age, grade and Lexile level.

Customers may click on the award and see additional awardwinning titles and their availability. Lexile Measure is a method used by schools to measure a student reader’s ability.

In 2013, Rutter’s funds were used to develop the Lancaster County Libraries Mobile App, which is another popular resource for library users to access the online catalog and other electronic resources from

Rock Ford Posts Children’s Story Program After another summer of Stories on the Porch, Rock Ford Plantation has announced its new Stories in the Barn programs. Stories in the Barn will be held in the historic bank barn on the grounds of Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Children will hear a story related to early America and

then participate in an activity.

The first Stories in the Barn program, geared toward preschool through elementary school-age children, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3:30 p.m.

The American Heart Association recently dedicated a second blood pressure kiosk in Lancaster thanks to support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and matching funds from CVS Health. Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and representatives from the American Heart Association were on hand at Bright Side Opportunities Center on Sept. 12 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new blood pressure monitoring kiosk, which is available for public use.

The first kiosk was installed at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in July with the support of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation. The kiosks are also the first American Heart Association blood pressure kiosks to be installed in Pennsylvania. The kiosks provide instructions to ensure the user receives an accurate blood pressure reading and information to interpret their blood pressure reading and make healthy lifestyle choices that can help control their blood pressure.

Users will also have the opportunity to register for the American Heart Association’s evidencebased blood pressure control tracker called Check. Change.

Control. The program provides users with ongoing information and tips via email and helps them track their progress toward lowering their blood pressure over time using an online tracker.

Retiring Chair Plans Her Last Potpie Sale

Dawn Mokros-Rathgeb has set a record for longest-standing chair in a volunteer position at East Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company, serving for a decade as the ways and means committee chair. In that position, she has been responsible for organizing and running the organization’s fundraising events. “Everybody thinks being part of a fire company is all about fires.

It’s not,� Mokros-Rathgeb said. “For the past 10 years, I have been able to give back to the fire

company and the community without going on any fire calls.�

While Mokros-Rathgeb chose to serve behind the scenes, her replacement, Kiersten Yocum, opted to go in another direction. Yocum joined the fire company last year and became a member of the fire police and the organization’s secretary. She is now training to be a firefighter. Yocum lives on the edge of the borough and decided to sign up after seeing a “Why Not You?� advertisement in the Merchandiser. “I was looking for a volunteer opportunity,� Yocum explained. “I

didn’t know what I was doing, but they’ve been showing me what to do.�

Volunteers are needed to help the fire company run smoothly and to protect community resources. There are a wide range of capacities in which folks may serve. “Volunteering with the fire company isn’t just putting out fires,� Yocum remarked. “We desperately need people on the administrative side.�

Yocum will officially become chair of the ways and means committee at the start of 2019.

Concert Will Highlight Music Of Puccini

Mokros-Rathgeb’s final event in that position will be the fall potpie takeout sale, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until the food is sold out. Folks must come to the fire station, 6076 Pine St., East Petersburg, to buy quarts of the savory favorite. Customers are encouraged to bring boxes or sturdy bags if they plan to purchase large quantities of potpie.

The doors will not open before 9 a.m., and potpie will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. “People know they have to get here early,� commented fire company vice president and ways and means committee member Frank Mokros.

Volunteers will begin cooking at 4 a.m. on Nov. 3. Three batches of beef potpie and 13 of chicken potpie are slated to be made.

That is an increase of two chicken batches, approximately 220 quarts, from the sale in February, which sold out entirely. The entrees are made from scratch and cooked in two industrial kettles.

As volunteers prepare for the fundraiser, Mokros-Rathgeb is hoping that Nov. 3 will be a dry day. “Humidity can affect dough,�

Mokros-Rathgeb said. “The weather can be a factor. It can be tricky; people don’t realize it.�

Folks are invited to come out to the potpie takeout event and bid farewell to Mokros-Rathgeb and make Yocum’s acquaintance. “And fill out a volunteer form,� Yocum said.

As Yocum looks toward beginning her tenure, she said that she plans to keep the fundraising calendar the same as it has been in previous years, but she would like to eventually add a summer event. The twice-yearly potpie sales are slated to continue as well.

Participants in Penn Square Music Festival, a Lancaster-based young artist training program for opera singers, will perform “Death

by Puccini� on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. at Millersville University’s Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The performance will consist of music by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini. It will feature the classically trained, unamplified voices of nationally acclaimed singers, including soprano Chloe Olivia Moore, Lancaster native tenor Peter Scott Drackley, bass baritone Andrew Potter, and mezzo-soprano Nora Graham Smith.

The performance will include Act 3 of “La bohème,â€? Act 2 of “Tosca,â€? and Act 3 of “Madama Butterfly,â€? operas written by Puccini.
