Honored to be an Eagle Scout BY JEFF FALK

For HOPE International, money can buy happiness $1.2 million. That’s a bag of loot. That’s some serious bank. That’s a loaf of bread. That’s the amount of money that HOPE International, 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, recently raised with its 23rd annual golf outing. The Manheim Townshipbased nonprofit will put those dollars to good use in the form of loans, investments and assistance to financially challenged individuals and families around the globe. “ We’re excited about the impact we are having,” said HOPE International founder Jeff Rutt. “That money will impact thousands and thousands of lives. Small loans can empower families to have dignity instilled in their lives. With the families we serve, we really believe
God has put each of them in our hands.” “A lot of people like to golf, and a lot of people want to impact lives around the world,” Rutt continued.
“That money will impact thousands and thousands of lives. Small loans can empower families to have dignity instilled in their lives.” “This is a vehicle. It’s a way to network together, have a great time outdoors and at the same time drive out poverty. It’s a fun way of fundraising.” The outing was conducted at three separate golf courses - Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon,
Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford and Turf Valley Golf Club in Ellicott City, Md. - in the middle of September. Some 350 players participated. “It’s small businesses who want to get involved, and they’ll send folks on their team,” said Rutt. “Sometimes the golfers may not even be aware of what the owner of their company is doing. They may not even be aware the company is involved with helping lives around the world. It’s a great way to get involved.” The 2023 version of the HOPE International golf outing raised about $200,000 more than last year’s. The event pulled in $951,444 in 2021 and raised more than $625,000 the year prior. Over the years, the golf outing has collected more than $7 million in donations.
It took Miriam Lester about a year to become an Eagle Scout.
Troop 99B is made up of about 50 males. “I feel really honored to be an Eagle Scout,” said Lester, who’s currently majoring in social anthropology and politics at The University of Edinburgh in Scotland. “I’ve definitely worked hard as a student to achieve things, but this is one of my biggest accomplishments. I felt proud of myself when I finished. See Miriam Lester pg 4
Join Tess Gerritsen at Council of Friends event BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’” Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who will headline the Council of Friends of Public Libraries’ fall author event
at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. “Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made

In nature circles, the name “eagle” is used to refer to both the female and male members of genus Aquila. Miriam Lester is more than OK with that. A 2023 graduate of McCaskey High School, Lester recently achieved the Scouts BSA’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Lester is one of more than 5,000 female Eagle Scouts, and she recognizes the hard work and dedication that were required to accomplish the feat since she joined Scouts BSA in 2022. “I had a friend who was in BSA and she recruited me to join,” said Lester. “I had a connection to someone in Boy Scouts, and I wanted a very rigorous experience. I learned so much about myself. There were so many opportunities presented to me through BSA.” Lester was one of four female members of Scout BSA’s Troop 99G, which is affiliated with Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road in Manheim Township. Scouts BSA’s
