The Lancaster Public Library celebrated its supporters and volunteers on Sept. 8 during an appreciation event held at the library. In addition to providing an array of food, fellowship, and musical entertainment, the event served to give the library’s biggest fans a sneak peak at several upcoming library events. Stephanie and Tom Yentsch have supported the library since they moved to the area several decades ago. Coming from a rural area in western Pennsylvania, Stephanie noted that she was thrilled to live within walking distance of the library. “I was excited; it was huge!” Stephanie recalled of her first visits to the library. Later, when Stephanie’s mother, Virginia, came to live with the couple, a library visit became part of

Some time ago, Rep. Keith Greiner, a Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) graduate, was at a meeting attended by Phil Hursh and Harry Wink. The three discussed a memorial for Sgt. Melvin Wink, who grew up and resided in West Earl Township, and was the only CVHS graduate killed while serving in Vietnam. The conversation led to Greiner talking to the Pennsylvania state transportation committee in Harrisburg about the possibility of refurbishing an aging bridge that spanned the Conestoga River between Brownstown and Farmersville in West Earl Township and dedicating the newly refurbished structure to Wink’s service. Greiner introduced House Bill 2425, and on Aug. 16, the bridge was dedicated in Wink’s name. See Bridge pg 5

A Tale Of Two Families … And A Studebaker Oscar Winner’s Mother To Speak At By Ann Mead Ash Sisterhood’s “Night Of Galaxy” Event

On a rainy Friday morning at the end of August, Mary Henning stood outside the home where she grew up more than 50 years ago on Old Philadelphia Pike in the Bridgeport area. “There was an empty field here, and we had an extensive garden,” said Mary of the farm her parents bought in 1960. “My dad learned the electrical trade, but he never left the farm,” she added, recalling that she and her four siblings spent their summer days doing chores. “ We children were thrilled to go back to school,” said Mary. “The other students would complain that they were bored over the summer, but we had worked shelling peas.” Mary’s attention on Aug. 23 was called to the second floor of the barn located just adjacent to the house. The event will be a celebration of kinship and diversity by Kenyan women, and everyone is invited to attend, regardless of their race, color, or nationality.
