“Box Out Bullying” Appropriate Bergstresser Family for Local Audiences Rallies Around Harry

T
hrough his stage productions of “Box Out Bullying,” Jeremy Rubenstein has shared his message about bullying across the country and positively impacted thousands of lives. Now, it seems that the next logical step in Rubenstein’s 18-year journey of inspiration would be to bring that message home to Lancaster County. “I think this is something that everybody has a story with,” said Rubenstein, who has backgrounds in education, theater and basketball. “They’ve been bullied, they’ve Actors perform a version of “Box Out Bullying.” witnessed bullying or they’ve (been bullies) themselves. Murals are so much more than oversized paintings. Colorful, loud and proud, murals are the ultimate in visual storytelling. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has a great big story to tell. “Murals are a great way to celebrate the community in a positive way and add some color to your day,” said Mike Andrelczyk, the communications and volunteer manager for the organization. “This mural is a celebration of community, and the Lancaster Habitat ReStore is a place where

Harry Bergstresser’s health struggle is a deeply personal issue, but not one that he is facing on his own. Harry is receiving support, care and love from his engaged family. Alissa Bergstresser is Harry’s mom and the matriarch of the Bergstresser family. She is uniquely qualified for that role by her work as a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), some of which is performed at UPMC’s Lititz campus. “Because (Harry’s) the oldest, we haven’t known parenthood without this,” said Alissa, who’s been a CRNP for a total of 12 years. “I think it has made me a more understanding and flexible nurse practitioner. My husband (Paul) has ended up being home more with the children than he intended.” “We’re now more moment to moment,” continued Alissa. “We have to be ready for what’s next. It’s also helped us appreciate our health and our time together as a family.” Harry and the Bergstressers’ story is a reminder of the immeasurable value of health and that we as humans will all face hardships in one form or another, at one time or another. Harry is a fairly typical teenager, outside of the fact that he is currently facing the possibility of a second kidney transplant. About two years ago, the kidney that his dad, Paul, donated to him when he was an infant showed signs of being rejected by Harry’s body. “I would say Harry is in a stable place, but it’s not great,” said See Bergstresser pg 3

Bergstresser from pg 1 Alissa. “He’s definitely on a road to a second transplant. His kidney function is not great. But the emotional struggle has been worse than the physical struggle. “He struggles with feelings of isolation because he doesn’t have peers who are going through something similar,” Alissa added. “He puts on a brave face. Overall, I think he’s extremely brave and extremely resilient. But he can’t have all these strong moments all the time. He knows he’s going to need another transplant. I think he’s getting tired of not having a physical break.” When it is determined that he will need another transplant, Harry, who’s a ninth-grader at Manheim Township High School, will be placed on a waiting list for a new kidney. The compatible kidney could come from a fr iend or family member, or it could come from a deceased donor. During the 2025-26 scho-
lastic year, Harry missed 60 days of his eighth-grade experience at Manheim Township Middle School. “I will definitely be tested, and friends and family will be tested to see who is a match as a living donor,” said Alissa. “The prognosis for the current kidney is not great. Depending on the avenue he goes down, the quality of life could be better or worse. “ T h e k i d n e y i s ve r y important because it serves multiple roles in the body,” added Alissa. “It helps with water and excreting waste. It helps with our blood pressure. It’s important for the balance of the electrolytes in our bodies.” When he was six months old, Harry was diagnosed with a congenital kidney defect. He received a kidney donation from Paul when he was 2. “The kidney transplant went as we all we could’ve hoped for,” said Alissa. “Then in 2023, Harry started having complications.

“Harry’s an old soul,” she continued. “He’s unique in that he prefers the company of adults. He loves, loves animals. He likes music. He’s kind and generous and always worried about doing the right thing.” Four years ago, Alissa began working for UPMC. “Harry received his care elsewhere until I started working for UPMC,” said Alissa. “UPMC is known nationally for its world-renowned care. What’s been hugely important is that there are times when he can
get his care in Harrisburg and Lititz, instead of going to Pittsburgh. They can provide his care locally. “No one knows anyone else’s struggles,” concluded Alissa. “When you look at Harry on some days, you might not know about his struggles. He’s carrying a huge burden for a 14-yearold. It’s important to be open-minded, and knowing people’s backgrounds is so important. You don’t know what has shaped them to become the people they are today.”

the community can come together to support our mission of building homes, community and hope, just by shopping and getting a great deal. This mural is really special for a lot of reasons, but one of the best parts is that it illuminates how Habitat families work hard to make their dream of homeownership a reality, and how people from all walks of life come together to make our community a better place and build a brighter future.” In late August , L ancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which is located at 1061 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, unveiled a 48-foot-by-17-foot mural depicting and commemorating its special journey of community leadership. The mural also recognized the organization’s 40 years of making Lancaster and Lebanon better places to live. The 90-minute unveiling event drew dozens of public officials, community partners, organization staff and volunteers, supporters and local residents who have benefited from the nonprofit’s services and featured a public address from
Lancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo. The 40th anniversary mural was created by local artists Brenda Blank and Steve Wilson and was sponsored by Joe, Jake, David and Emily Deerin. “The great thing about Habitat events is they are always such joyous celebrations of the community coming together to do something meaningful and powerful,” said Andrelczyk. “We’ve grown a lot over the course of 40 years. Thanks to our staff, board, donors, volunteers and supporters, we’re now able to build a greater number of affordable homes in Lancaster and Lebanon counties and have an even bigger impact. We’re always innovating and finding more efficient ways to build. No matter how much we’ve grown, we’re dedicated to making our community a better place for everyone, one home at a time.” “The people who volunteer, give and shop with Habitat may be modest,” said Carolyn Haskell, a board member, “but we are also optimists and people of action. We believe the best of humanity comes from kindness, compassion and
the generosity of others. Together, we overcome great challenges.” The mural was painted on the southeast interior wall of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Lancaster. From brainstorming sessions in the spring to planning and then ultimately execution, the mural project took more than 200 hours to complete. Since 1986, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has positively impacted the lives of 300 families and individuals through affordable housing. The program has grown from approximately 50 students in the fall of 2024 to 120 students and counting this fall. L ancaster Rec offers eight genres of dance, including ballet, contemporary, dance fitness, jazz, hip-hop, and tap, with beginning and intermediate classes designed to meet a variety of interests and experience levels. New this season for adult dancers are musical theater dance and movement lab. Ten classes
are available for adults each week, with options available every weeknight and on Saturdays. The adult dance program has also expanded to three dance educators, who lead weekly classes across the schedule. For some participants, dance has become a family endeavor. Parents and children from the same families take classes and then cheer one another on during the end-of-year recital. Affordability is paramount to Lancaster Rec’s mission, and scholarships are offered for children from families with financial need.
