LCHS Announces Homecoming Court By Ann Mead Ash

On Friday, Oct. 18, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. The 2019 homecoming queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity

football game against Donegal High School, which will begin at 7 p.m. The 2018 homecoming queen, Ellie Bryce, will crown the 2019 queen at the conclusion of the ceremony. A homecoming dance will be held at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 19,

at 7 p.m. The 10 LCHS homecoming queen candidates are Nuo Chen, Bedei Gibala, Sydney Kirchner, Claudia Linkey, Zoe Orihuel, Sommer Reeser, Kelixa Rivera, Kat Sahd, Angelle San Jose, and Hannah Schmidt. Nuo Chen, known as Promise at school, lives with her host parents, Matt and Katie Wieand, in Strasburg. At school, Promise is a member of Global Group and Garden Club, and she bowls. Outside school, she volunteers at her church. After graduation, she plans to attend college to study environmental science. She will be escorted to the game by her host father. Bedei Gibala is the daughter of Anna Dennis of Lancaster. At school, Bedei is a member of Link Crew, Aevidum, and the prom and Mini-THON committees. Tattoos And Testimonies To Return To Overlook By Ann Mead Ash

A year ago, members of Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster decided to hold an event called Story Marks in Lancaster. The gathering featured photos and testimonies of a number of local women

about how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. The event was so well received, the group, which includes Rebekah ChristensPersaud, Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, Linda Johnston, Marlene Hall, Joleen Yunginger, Blanche Myer, and Lily Cheng, has decided to hold a second presentation. On Thursday, Oct. 24, area women are invited to the Barn at Stoner Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, in Overlook Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos; hear speakers, including Friedrichs; and enjoy light fare. Making Shakespeare Modern LMHS To Stage “Romeo and Juliet” By Ann Mead Ash

When director Dean Sauder chose “Romeo and Juliet” as the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) fall play, he wanted to present the show to audiences who may have never seen the entire play, and he set it in the present with contemporary scenes of students in high school using cellphones. Megan Esch, who plays the Nurse, has caught Sauder’s vision. “I feel a lot of people (think) Shakespeare is old and boring, but a lot of this show is really funny,” she said. “I want people who come to see it to have a new understanding of Shakespeare.” “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17; Friday, Oct. 18; and Saturday, Oct. 19. Cast members began working on memorizing their lines early in the summer, and Noah said he was concerned that audiences might be confused by the original Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting. However, once rehearsals began, the depth of the subject matter moved to the forefront. “A lot of wrong choices are made,” noted Megan, adding that life lessons for both children and parents are contained in the script. “Don’t shut your children down when they want to talk,” she said. “Don’t do stuff behind your parents’ backs. This is an example of how tragically wrong that can go.” Josiah agreed. “(Romeo and Juliet’s) problems snowball throughout the show,” he said, warning, “Problems can snowball if you don’t address them.” The cast members are also having fun preparing to stage the show, which will be presented in a canyon format, with the audience on stage with the actors. “The nurse is an extreme character,” explained Megan.

Church Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign are supported by the village and its church. The fundraising campaign is in response to the destruction of Busoka Lutheran Church’s building by a storm in the spring of 2019. St. Peter’s goal is to raise $5,000 to rebuild the church. As part of the campaign kickoff on Sept. 8, church leaders presented current information on Busoka Lutheran Church, the orphans of Busoka, and plans for reconstructing the damaged church

building. Global Mission Sunday is celebrated throughout the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and by more than 80 companion churches in other countries. St. Peter’s past support of Busoka Lutheran Church in Tanzania has been funded by donations from church members and by the church’s annual Cookie Walk. St. Peter’s next Cookie Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14.

Streaks Blank Cedar Crest, Move to 8-0 by Ara Grigorian

When the story is written for the Manheim Township 2019 football season, there won’t necessarily be mentions of wins that are huge even though within most games there were critical plays. The story won’t harp on winning streaks either, because head coach Mark Evans, his assistants and the Blue Streaks players will have focused on going 1-0 each and every week. On Friday, October 11, the Streaks went 1-0 in blowout fashion on their home turf, defeating LancasterLebanon League rival Cedar Crest 62-0. The Streaks improved to 8-0. Next up is winless McCaskey. “The records don’t mean anything,” Evans said. “We are going to work hard to get ready for the game. We’re focusing on what’s in front of us, not what’s behind us. All year we’ve talked about staying humble yet hungry.” They scored seven offensive touchdowns, one more on a 51-yard interception return by Jon Engel plus a pair of field goals by Jackson Wright. “Jon is a great kid,” Evans said. “He’s going to Lafayette on a full

scholarship to play football. He’s a hard-working kid who really came in to his own last year.” The special teams almost scored a touchdown also right from the start of the game. “We almost had a score on the opening kickoff,” Evans explained. “Anthony Ivey had a huge kickoff return, taking it to the one-yard line.” Township quarterback Harrison Kirk connected with Mickey Stokes on a 46-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. By then, the Streaks had already built a 21-0 lead thanks to the short-yardage rushing TD’s, two of which were one-yard quarterback sneaks, in the first quarter. The first of the one-yard sneaks was set up by Ivey’s kickoff return. The Streaks’ running game was virtually unstoppable. As a team, they compiled 247 yards on the ground while Kirk completed four of six pass attempts for 79 yards. Jaden Floyd, who had a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, gained 30 yards. Kirk had 58 rushing yards and Bryce Casey racked up 55 on four carries. Cade Clancy and Isaiah Jones scored on rushing touchdowns from 12 yards out and 43 yards,

respectively. Evans was asked of the threeheaded running game - Jaden Floyd, Bryce Casey and Kirk. “Bryce and Jaden are both power runners,” said Evans. “Those guys do not shy away from hitting anyone. “Harry is deceptively fast,” continued the coach. “In a lot of respects, he hasn’t had to use his legs. With its 4-0 league record, Manheim Township holds a one-game lead in the Section One standings over Wilson, a team that lost at home to MT back on September 27. In fact, Wilson is second behind Township in the District Three Class 6A power rankings. CROSS COUNTRY The Township boys’ and girls’ team competed against Ephrata and Penn Manor at Ephrata on Tuesday, October 8. The girls’ team dominated Manor 15-53 but came up a little short against the home team 24-33. The Township boys defeated both opponents as the girls and boys wrapped up their regular seasons with identical 6-4 records. Chloe Kline had the best time for the MT girls, racing to a third-place finish at a time of 20:36. There were six Township runners crossing the finish line in successive order in the persons of Avery Ebersole (21:17, 6th), Ava Pasewicz (21:18, 7th), Jenny Weiss (21:24, 8th), Sarah Russo (21:25, 9th) Aurelia Huss (21:44, 10th) and Cecelia Walker (21:46, 11th). Also, Sophie Ilkhanoff’s 22:43 earned her 15th place. The boys outran the competition in two close races, 22-36 over Ephrata and 24-36 over Manor. The Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host a Fall Craft and Vendor Show indoors at the restored 1882 freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Craftpersons and direct sales vendors will be located inside on two floors of the restored freight station. Additional crafts and vendors will be located outside if weather permits. Vendor consultants will offer gourmet convenience foods, scented candle wax, fashion jewelry, nail polish strips, handbags and totes and household cleaning products. Handcrafted items will include gemstone wrap bracelets and earrings, laser-engraved wood ornaments and jewelry, soaps, bath bombs, table runners, embroidered towels, wreaths, greeting cards, children’s and adults’ knitted items, handpainted wood signs, glass blocks, crayon critters, primitive home décor, crocheted items, beaded scarves, hemp jewelry, barn wood signs and sheet music wreaths. Admission and parking will be free; food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit needed building maintenance on the 1882 freight station and railroad-related restoration projects of the Lancaster Chapter and the NRHS.
