Two Ways to Celebrate Halloween BY JEFF FALK

f all the holidays celebrated in our country, Halloween is among the most mysterious, the most obscure, the most interpretive, and not just in spooky ways. But it may be that the Manheim Township Recreation Department has got the whole Halloween thing figured out. “It’s a little bit of nostalgia,” said Chaley Bulla, Manheim Township’s recreation program manager. “It’s also about the time of the year. The weather is nice and you get to be Visitors to last year’s Halloween festivities in Manheim Township engage in an activity. outdoors. It really brings people together in a fun way. It’s almost like the old chicken and the egg routine. What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata Reformed Presbyterian Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. They want good return on their investments. They want to donate to causes that are aligned with their values. They want to steward their finances well, and Faithful Give exists to help with that.”

Pedaling Toward Personal Growth BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Students who participated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut nor th to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes See Lifecycles pg 2

for upward of 90 minutes a ride. On Saturdays, they ride for three to five hours. “By the time they get to the end of July and head out on the trips, they’re physically ready to do it,” Lee said. “They do well on the Challenge Rides. The self-confidence they develop along the way really changes them. They’re different people when they come home.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, founded Lifecycles 12 years ago. They wanted to provide opportunities for young people to take bike rides while also growing in faith and fellowship. Since its inception, the program has served 549 boys and girls in Lancaster and York counties, who have ridden more than 600,000 miles. “That’s the distance to the moon and back and halfway to the moon again,” Lee said. From April through mid-October, groups set out from locations throughout the county on weekday and Saturday rides.

Lee explained that Lifecycles is for anyone who wants to try it. “They don’t have to make the team. If they show up, they’re on the team,” he said. “There’s no cost for anything. Everything is 100% free.” Participants can receive all the gear they need, and each ride includes a free hot meal. Participants are taught to ride safely in small groups, progressing at a pace that serves them, Lee said, and ride groups are separated by boys and girls as well as by strengths and abilities. “It’s an opportunity for youths to get out in the fresh air, make new friends and be supervised in a positive and encouraging environment,” he said. “They develop their skills at their own pace.” No experience with biking is required to join Lifecycles. “We’ve taught kids to ride,” Lee said. “We have everyone from beginners to experts in our groups.” He encourages parents to consider signing their child up for the next season of Lifecycles, which will begin in the third week in April next year. “A person doesn’t have to belong to a church, doesn’t have to come in with a relationship with Jesus, but they are going to hear about it,” Lee said. “If you want your child to have this outdoor adventure experience with a faith-based core, that’s what we do.” To learn more about Lifecycles, visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

Halloween from pg 1 Then, on the following day, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, the lowsensory Spooky Soiree will be staged at the same Overlook Activities venue. The Halloween events, which are being supported by 12 sponsors, are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to dress for the occasion. Organizers of both events will be accepting donations of new or gently used coats and jackets, as well as nonperishable food items,

which will be distributed by the Manheim Township School District to underprivileged families. “It’s a way to provide things for our community that are fun,” said Bulla. “We’re all very positive, very welcoming, and it makes people feel invited. We want to provide things that are fun for everything.” “We’re providing people with something they enjoy and making memories,” she added. “We’re part

Church to Host Choir Concert St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host a concert by the Saint Agnes Schola from West Chester on Sunday, Oct. 18. The performance is titled “Surge Illuminare” and will begin at 7 p.m. Under the direction

of people’s childhoods. We want to continue to provide this Halloween experience.” The Halloween Carnival will feature five food trucks, a massive outdoor trunk-or-treat event hosted by the Manheim Township Police Department, games, mini-golf, prizes, a haunted expedition, a skeleton crawl, photo opportunities, a costume parade, face painting and performing dancers. Conducted in low light, with minimal noise and including gentle activities, the Spooky Soiree will highlight games, balloons, crafts, pumpkin painting, puzzles, a reptile show, a costume parade, tabletop trick-or-treat and a quiet space. “The two events are pretty different,” said Bulla. “The carnival is very fun and very friendly. Things move quickly. It’s a lot of movement. The Spooky Soiree is a calmer event. It

allows visitors time to get comfortable. It’s just a lot quieter. Both events are really fun in their own different ways, and that’s OK.” The Halloween Carnival is expected to draw over 2,500 guests, while the Spooky Soiree will host about 125 visitors. “I think most people know about the Halloween Carnival,” said Bulla. “I think we do a good job of advertising it. It’s a really great time for people to come out and hang out. It’s really great for kids because they get a lot of candy and prizes. The soiree is a welcoming event that allows people to celebrate the holiday at their own pace.” While the Spooky Soiree was introduced last year by Manheim Township as an alternative event, the Halloween Carnival will be celebrating its 10th annual anniversary. added Kieffer. “Generosity is not just about giving your money; it’s about giving your heart and your talents. We just want to connect people and celebrate that. (Faithful Give) really emphasizes the versatility of the Christian community.” From midnight on Sunday, Oct. 18, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20, interested individuals can direct financial donations to Faithful Give’s general fund by going to www.faithfulgive.org/ donate. People can also donate funds in person at Faithful Give’s prayer breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, or at Faithful Give’s Celebration Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. “The breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to learn about all that God is doing in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “Most of the kingdom causes are represented, and you can learn about their ministries, know those people and pray for them. One of the neat things we’ve seen is the networking that has come out of it. The Celebration Expo is a full, family event. Families get a chance to spend a night out. Last year, my favorite thing was seeing how many families came out to the expo and learned about the missions.” This year, more than 150 Lancaster County-associated ministries, nonprofits and social service organizations have registered to be a part of Faithful Give. The funds that they receive allow those organizations to provide broader, deeper and more impactful services and programs, as well as to reach more individuals in need. “They are people from organizations who love God and love Lancaster County,” said Kieffer, a resident of Manheim Township. “They’re people who make Lancaster County a great place to live and raise a family. They’re people who have inherited a great legacy and want to pass that legacy on to the next generation.” Following some exploratory research, the initial Faithful Give event was staged in 2023. Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Every year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. It has served our community. It’s provided connection, advocacy and celebration. It’s just been a blessing.”
