Women Helping Women Deborah’s Circle Forms At Temple Shaarai Shomayim BY ANN MEAD ASH
About three years ago, Rosanne Selfon, former president of the international Women of Reformed Judaism, wanted to see a group of women at Temple Shaarai Shomayim take part in a pilot program of women helping women. While that program did not quite take off, Selfon was not ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations. “About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,” said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,” said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.”
The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work … and we laid out a plan,” said Selfon. Part of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,” explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in,” Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,” she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.” A small group began meeting in the See Helping Women pg 3

Arthur Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” has recently published his first new book in six years, and he plans to have another book out later this fall. “West to Freedom,” which was released in September, is the story of best friends who in 1862 embark on a journey to free one of them from
Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written

Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tempur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Com-

While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs.” McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit

Selfon hopes to grow the group to about 40 or more members to make an even bigger impact. fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge,” said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children,” Selfon said. The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,” recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “ We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be,” said Selfon, who noted that the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,” said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “We called for an (online) meeting of the steering committee, and we agreed to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs.” The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro House and the Lancaster County Food Hub. “The bottom line is that I would not have written a check for $750 to either one of them (by myself)” said Selfon, who noted what a delight it was to see the faces of the group members when the organizations were told about the funds they would receive. “We were all awestruck that

Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,� John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown. “Summer at Stewart Creek,� which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979. “This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,� mused Moore. A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realisticlooking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,� said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.� “Summer� is the story of 12-year-old Brett Tompkins who finds himself in West Virginia when his father, a banker, takes over the family logging business from Brett’s ailing grandfather. Brett makes new friends and has adventures in Snow Shoe. As he learns to enjoy life in his new home, he hopes to convince his mother to visit and come to love the place as he does. the bonds of slavery. “Summer in Stewart Creek,� due out by early November, transports a young man from his hometown of Baltimore to the fictitious town of Snow Shoe, W.Va., in the summer of 1879. “ West to Freedom,� was written prior to 2010. Moore called the 56-page story more of a novella or extended short story than a book. Set in northwest Arkansas, the tale follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. When Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly involves slavery,� said Moore.

Dan Powell, executive pastor of SJNCS, then led the dedication, saying, “Today we inaugurate this school dedicated to education.” He welcomed Hockley to the SJNCS family and thanked outgoing principal Suzanne Wood. He also acknowledged those in attendance who had made contributions, including representatives of Wohlsen; the Knights of Columbus; St. John Neumann 12532, which donated crucifixes for each classroom; the American Legion, which donated the classroom flags; and Charles Snyder Funeral Home, which donated the classroom clocks. To open the first day in the traditional way, Hockley asked students to come forth to lead a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. “It is fitting that today we celebrate the birthday of our school, and we also celebrate the blessed mother’s birthday,” said Hockley. “St. Anne, our school’s patroness, gave birth to the blessed mother (the mother of Jesus), and today, St. Anne School brings to life St. John Neumann Catholic School.” Following the prayer and the pledge, student

Abby Klein played “America” on the keyboard. Powell noted, “Our school is so much more than teachers and students. The school is a place where the body of Christ is alive and well … where each person’s unique gifts are discovered and refined and where faith and virtue come alive. Today we ask God’s blessings on the physical signs of His loving presence.” Powell went on to bless the flags, clocks, and crucifixes with holy water. He also blessed the students and their families. The Most Rev. Ronald Gainer, bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, visited the school to bless it on Sept. 24.
The new school boasts 10 classrooms to accommodate kindergarten through eighthgrade students. There is also a computer lab; a multipurpose room, which serves as a cafeteria and a gym; and offices. Delp Road, Lancaster, launched a capital campaign for the purpose of building a new education center and renovating the church to allow for additional classrooms. On Feb. 2, 2020, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new school was held and Wohlsen Construction began to build, following designs by Ted Vedock. On March 19, when the state mandated closing all nonessential businesses, construction stopped until May 1. A new construction schedule allowed for the school to be ready to open on Sept. 8. “This moment in history comes as a result of trust in God’s plan and God’s time,” said Hockley. “And so we begin by giving our praise and thanksgiving to God.” The Rev.

remember, honor, and teach by laying holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves in December each year, Troop 64 assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans said. “ We’re remembering the veterans, their service, their sacrifice. We’re honoring their families. We’re teaching the youths about the military and the sacrifices that have been made for them to live in a land that is free,” she explained. When Troop 64 first got involved with WAA a few years ago, it focused on collecting money for wreaths at IGNC. A former troop member is interred at IGNC, as is the father of a current Scout. The number of graves at IGNC has increased to about 43,000, and the troop has expanded its impact to local cemeteries. The troops laid

That prompted new ideas for raising money to support Wreaths Across America (WAA), which Troop 64 has participated in for several years. Thus, the Veterans Wreath Ride was created. Hosted by AMVETS Post 19, 715 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, the Veterans Wreath Ride for motorcyclists will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, rain or shine. Registration will be open from 10 to 11:45 a.m., during which food may be purchased from the post kitchen. The ride will leave the post at noon and will end at the veterans’ memorial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) in Annville about an hour later. There is a cost to participate in the ride, and the money collected will be given to WAA. The purpose of WAA is to
