Whatever you do, don’t tell Dakota Nesbitt she can’t do something
BY JEFF FALK
Why does she do it? Why does she compete so hard? Why does she excel at sports?
Because Dakota Nesbitt can.
A third-grader at Bucher Elementary School, Dakota lives with a form of spina bifida. But that doesn’t stop the determined 8-year-old from doing the things she loves to do.
In fact, it may even make her want to do them more.
“I think for Dakota, she’s always been naturally competitive,” said Amanda Nesbitt, Dakota’s mom. “She never had the body to keep up. Everything she’s done, she’s always worked for. I don’t know if she knows anything else but to work hard.”
Dakota competes in wheelchair track, wheelchair basketball and para-swimming. And she’s quite accomplished in all three pursuits.
A few months ago in Birmingham, Ala., Dakota captured fivenot three, not four, but five - gold medals at the 66th annual Hartford Nationals, sponsored by Move United. The event is the longest-running national sports championship for athletes with a physical, visual and/or intellectual disability.
Dakota took top honors in her age group in the 60-meter race, the 100-meter race, the 200-meter race, the 400-meter race and the 800-meter race.
“I did good,” said Dakota. “I got first places. But I always cheer for every kid in all of the races.”
“She’s done a lot in life,” said Amanda of her daughter. “I think she just does it for the friendships. Every kid there has some sort of disability. No one there is saying, ‘She’s the girl in the wheelchair.’”
When she was younger, Dakota always had a desire to keep up with everyone else, to be like other kids.
Keeping the faith
First online fundraiser for Kingdom causes planned
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”
The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local
organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17. To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park.
“There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at

It was in September of 2021 when she was introduced to wheelchair and para-sports.
“She can’t keep up with her peers,” said Amanda. “She works her butt off to keep up with them. But you can’t always be the strongest in the room. She deals with things other 8-year-olds don’t have to deal with.”
“The first time she got into a basketball wheelchair was truly the first time she took off,” continued Amanda. “She went fast. It has been life changing for her.”
“I have a bunch of medals in my room,” said Dakota. “I want to keep competing because then I can have more and more medals in my room. Then I can wake up every day and be proud of myself.”
Because Dakota’s legs are partially paralyzed, she walks with braces and a limp. At a very young age, she learned how to make lemonade from lemons.

Guide dogs in training are Puppies with a Purpose
BY JEFF FALK
The bond between humans and dogs is different from those that exist between any of God’s other creatures. Puppies with a Purpose harnesses that relationship and even puts it to the test. In association with Lancaster County 4-H, Puppies with a Purpose is a dog fostering program designed to prepare young canines for a life of serving people with visual impairments. Bred for service by The Seeing Eye of Morristown, N.J., the puppies live in the homes of Puppies with a Purpose members for about a year before receiving five months of professional training to become certified guide dogs. “Humans and dogs form that bond,” said Paula Cook, the leader of the Lancaster chapter of Puppies with a Purpose. “If that bond is there, it’s a mutual thing. That’s kind of how dogs are wired. With a personality of a dog, it’s a two-way street. That’s why people bond with their pets. That’s why visually impaired people bond with their guide dogs.”

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithful give.org/prizes/.
Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer
said.
Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions
in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”
Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more. “Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding
that neither he nor the other board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaver - are salaried.

LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal
Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes
damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.
According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste
disposal facilities.
Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.
For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.Safe BatteryDisposal.com. The webpage, available in English
and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips. More information about LCSWMA is available at www.lcswma.org.

During monthly meetings at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, members of Puppies with a Purpose and their foster dogs receive formal training centered around 10 basic commands. There are also two outings each month where members and their dogs can put some of the things they learned into practice.
“We’re trying to expose the dogs to the different sights and sounds and smells that they would encounter as guide dogs,” said Cook. “We’re trying to teach them how to be polite puppies and get them used to everyday things.”
Members of Puppies with a Purpose typically welcome their foster dogs into their homes at the age of seven weeks. The future guide dogs are usually either Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds or Labrador and golden retriever mixes.
“It’s not like having a pet,” said Cook. “It’s training and teaching. You’re making a commitment to do
a lot with the dogs. By teaching commands, we’re trying to get back to basics with the dogs. It’s everyday stuff that should help later on as they grow and mature.”
There are more than 40 clubs like Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose serving The Seeing Eye in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York and Maryland. Founded in 1929 in Nashville, Tenn., The Seeing Eye moved to its current headquarters in Morristown in 1965, and currently about 1,550 people in the United States and Canada use guide dogs from The Seeing Eye.
“Believe it or not, not all dogs want to be pets,” said Cook. “They want to work. They want to please people. The Seeing Eye breeds dogs with personalities that are driven to work. The dogs enjoy it.”
Cook first became involved with Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose as a way to share an experience with her 8-year-old daughter. That was 15 years ago. Cook’s daughter is now an
adult, and the dog Cook is fostering is her 13th.
“You know when you get (the dog) that you’re going to give it back,” said Cook. “And you know (the dog) is going to be helping someone. You know the dog is going to allow someone who’s visually impaired this freedom. It’s very gratifying.”

“‘Disability’ is not a bad word in our house,” said Amanda. “We just want her to know that however she accesses the world is the right way - walking or wheeling, there’s no difference. Whatever the best way to get around. We want her to be fully accepting of whatever it is. She walks, and that’s great, and sometimes she has to wheel, and that’s great too.”
Among Dakota’s future goals is competing in the international Paralympics. Given her track record, betting against her would be ill-advised.
“She has no intentions of stopping,” said Amanda. “Dakota has zero doubts she’s going to make the Paralympics.”

Orchestra to offer Link Up program
In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in Link Up: The Orchestra Swings, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), during the 2023-24 season.
Lancaster County public and private elementary schools and homeschool families are invited to register to take part in the free Link Up program and attend a culminating concert on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14 and 15, 2024 at J. P. McCaskey High School, where they will sing and play the recorder with the orchestra from their seats. This experience often serves as a student’s first concert and allows them to apply the musical concepts they have studied. Registration information and further details about the program can be found at www.lancaster symphony.org/carnegie-hall -link-up
For more than 35 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three to five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum.
Link Up addresses the need for music instruction and resources by providing a free, year-long curriculum that teachers can implement, along with printed and digital classroom materials, online video and audio resources and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students.
The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of more than 100 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with professional, community and university orchestras across the U.S. and around
the world to support their existing education programs and strengthen their partnerships with local schools. In 2023-24, Link Up will partner with sites in the U.S., as well
as in Canada, China, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Kenya, New Zealand and Japan, to serve more than 300,000 students and teachers globally.

Make-A-Wish recently hosted its annual Convoy Celebration at The Farm at Eagles Ridge, where the new top 30 and grand driver lists were announced. The top 30 drivers in this year’s convoy raised $251,738, with Michael Kindt coming in first for the third straight year.
Up until 2017, raising $1,000 was enough to qualify for the Top 30. Once raising “a grand” no longer guaranteed a Top 30 spot, the Grand Driver designation was created. Every driver that raises more than $1,000 but does not qualify in the Top 30 earns the Grand Driver title. This year, 21 drivers earned the Grand Driver title and raised $32,369.
During the 2023 Mother’s
At the Convoy Celebration, the convoy committee was recognized for its dedication and commitment to make the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy a success. Also in attendance were the four Wish Kid Ambassadors whose stories were shared throughout the convoy campaign last year to inspire drivers throughout their fundraising efforts.
The 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, will take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The 2024 driver fundraising campaign will kick off on Monday, Oct. 16, at www.wishconvoy.org. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Dressing up for Halloween is a popular way to celebrate the spooky holiday, and many pet owners choose to include their companion animals in this activity. Data from a 2022 PetSmart national survey unveiled that more than 75% of pet owners planned to dress up their pets for Halloween and other fall occasions. Some individuals even planned to match their pet’s fall attire to their own.
There are plenty of costumes and pet clothing items designed for pets, but not all of them are recommended by humane organizations or vets. People should keep the following tips in mind when selecting costumes for their pets.
Pet owners should check that the clothing item is sized appropriately so that it is not restrictive. The pet should be able to walk properly, jump, groom, and relieve itself. Pets should not be left in costumes for too long, as the clothing may affect the animal’s ability to control its body temperature.
Pet owners should watch for behaviors that may indicate the pet is stressed by wearing the
costume. Pets feeling anxious may groom excessively or make more noise than usual. Dogs may pant a lot or yawn. If a pet is pawing or pulling at the costume, it might be making the animal uncomfortable.
The pet should be able to relay body language while wearing the costume so it may communicate with other animals. Costumes could interfere with that ability. If the pet will be wearing the costume indoors and not in proximity to other animals, it may be fine. Pets that will be walking outdoors and come into contact with other companion animals might act differently, and other animals may act aggressively when faced with a pet in a costume.
Pet owners should choose costumes that do not impede the pet’s vision or its ability to walk. The costume’s materials should also be fire-retardant and nontoxic.
Pet costumes are popular on Halloween, and pet parents can have fun celebrating while also keeping pets’ comfort and safety in mind.
