Thriving Under Extraordinary Circumstances

Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood.

Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013.

In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.”

Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram, See Thrive And Grit pg 3

“That’s what we’re called to do. We’re not in it for people to recognize us or return the favor. We want to help folks that nobody else has believed in.”

The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and displays and a prayer room will be available at that time.

Founded by breast cancer survivor Kim Coy, this nonprofit organization serves as a resource for breast cancer survivors, recognizing that they often experience long-term consequences of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation treatments. Based in Bainbridge, the group provides funds directly to individual survivors to help cover the costs of durable medical equipment (DME) and to assist with co-pays and deductibles for the expenses of associated therapies that Sweet Jane’s Wish Foundation This Chester County-based foundation help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Nearly 1,000 breast cancer survivors, nurses, doctors, radiologists, social workers, caregivers, researchers, and advocates will gather for networking, workshops, shopping opportunities, and more. White Cane Safety Day, a national observance in the United States, has been commemorated on Oct. 15 each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as the white cane, a tool of independence.

Manheim Township Lions Club will celebrate the annual White Cane Days on Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12.

Lions Club members will be stationed at Savemart on Fruitville Pike, Knight and Day Diner on Lititz Pike, and Brewers’ Outlet on Butler Avenue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days to accept contributions to benefit programs for blind and vision-impaired individuals. Youth members of the affiliated Manheim Township Leos Club will assist at Savemart and Knight and Day Diner on Oct. 12.

Contributions will help to fund programs such as the Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge near Mount Union, which provides a summer camp experience for children and adults with special needs, including blindness; Leader Dogs for the Blind, which empowers people who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind

with skills for a lifetime of independent travel; VisionCorps of Lancaster, which provides life-enhancement skills by combining clinical services, education, and employment programs for people who are blind or vision impaired; and other Manheim Township Lions Club and Pennsylvania Lions District 14-D activities.

The Manheim Township Lions Club is a member of Lions Club International. Its dinner meetings are scheduled on the second and fourth Mondays from September through June at 6:30 p.m. at the Brethren Village Fieldcrest Dining Hall in Neffsville.

Library Friends Post Book Sale The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library will hold their annual Fall ReSort Book Sale from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 11 to 13, at the Book ReSort Center, 225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster. On-site free parking is available. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and Oct. 13 will be half-price day.

Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never

lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit.

Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.

Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all

ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn.

Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to.

“She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.”

Gardeners To Discuss Fall Plants

A Civil War Living History Encampment will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Civil War re-enactors from across the region will set up a Federal (Union) camp, educational displays, and more to recreate Civil War-era Lancaster and the pressures of protecting the former U.S. President James Buchanan and his home.

Soldier and civilian tents will dot the Campus of History grounds, and visitors will be able to view military drills, chat with the soldiers, and attend various educational programs for free throughout the weekend.

On Oct. 12, several free activities will be available, including Civil War Story Time at 10 a.m., historic clothing and dress-up at 11 a.m., Make a Handkerchief Doll at 1 p.m., and historic dancing at 2 p.m. Lantern Tours will travel through the

Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer.

Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance.

“She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it

Harvest Days at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. The family-friendly event, set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13, will offer visitors an opportunity to step back in time.

To celebrate the event’s 60th anniversary, additional fun and unique learning experiences will be offered, and attendees will be able to see and take part in a variety of demonstrations. Family harvest-time activities from the early 18th century through the Victorian period will also be available.

Ongoing demonstrations of crafts, trades, and basic historic farm skills will include cooking on both open fires and hearths, butchering and food preservation, making apple cider and maple syrup, making clothing and household goods, and creating tools and parts for items around the farm. HOPE provided $5,000 in loans in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves 965,000 clients in 16 countries.

“I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood hand-in-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boycan noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would go around the world five times.”

Corvette Club from pg 3 year’s show, which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Faulkner Chevrolet, 2000 Bennett Ave., Lancaster. Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., and awards will be announced at approximately 3 p.m.

Although club members are passionate about Corvettes, the show is open to all General Motors (GM) vehicles, including those made or powered by Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, GMC, and Hummer.

“You can have a Ford with a GM engine, and we’ll let you in,” Henman said.

Custom and modified vehicles are welcome, and there is no restriction on type of vehicle.

“We get a great arrangement of trucks,” Henman remarked, adding that a 1950s-era rollback made an appearance at a previous show.

“We’ve had some hearses too,” added past president Jim Roberts.

The first Corvette was introduced in 1953. Preorders are being accepted now for the latest model, which will be available in early 2020, although the limited number allotted in the Lancaster area were snapped up almost immediately.

Still, that does not mean that interested individuals will necessarily have to wait to see one. Club governor Clyde Mooney explained that engineers are driving the 2020 Corvettes to test the vehicles and to generate interest.

“We can only hope that the brandnew ones show up (at the show),” Henman said.

Whoever would like to enter a vehicle in the show may register at a discounted price by Saturday, Oct. 12, or pay full price at the event. Owners of the first 200 vehicles will receive a goodie bag and event Tshirt. All registrants will be entered in a drawing for door prizes, and trophies will be awarded for the top three places in 14

classes.

There will be opportunities to win a cash prize, and attendees may place bids in a silent auction. Auction lots will include but not be limited to automotiverelated items. Only cash or checks will be accepted as payment for auction items.

“We’re still collecting stuff,” Mooney said. Roberts’ wife, Sharon, is serving as the auction chair.

The car show will also feature music played by a disc jockey, a “ladies’ oasis,” and refreshments by Brewster’s Bar-BQue & Fixin’s.

Proceeds from the event will be used to support Clare House Lancaster and to purchase Christmas gifts for the women and children who live there. In the past three years, the club has given more than $100,000 to the nonprofit organization, which helps homeless women become self-sufficient.

“The focus this year is on trauma and related disorders,” said Chakara. “We thought we would address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.” Chakara explained that he plans to discuss the weight of the issue and, based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and

trauma.”

Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community.

Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.”

Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can

comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.”

There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. A freewill offering will be received to defray expenses associated with the event. A portion of the offering will be designated for Faith and Friendship Ministries, which is the sponsor of the service.

MTHS Announces 2019 Homecoming Court On Friday, Oct. 11, Manheim Township High School (MTHS) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. The 2019 homecoming queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity football game against Cedar Crest High School, which will begin at 7 p.m. The 2018 homecoming queen, Britney Atebe, or Student Council president Dylan Norton will crown the 2019 queen at the conclusion of the ceremony.

CROSS COUNTRY Manheim Township hosted Elizabethtown and McCaskey in a cross country meet on Tuesday, October 1. In the girls’ race, Township topped McCaskey but came up short versus E-town. In the boys’ race, McCaskey finished on top with the Blue Streaks second. Both squads went to 4-2 on the year in the L-L League.

The E-town girls claimed three of the top four spots in the race with Township’s Chloe Kline earning fifth as she registered a time of 20:54. Ava Pesewicz took seventh (21:23) followed by teammates Aurelia Huss (21:43), Sarah Russo (21:44) and

Jenny Weiss (21:45).

Avery Ebersole (12th, 21:57) and Paige Laurence (15th, 22:25) were other top finishers for the Streaks, who outran McCaskey 24-36 but came up short against E-town, 28-30. It was a close race all around as the Bears edged McCaskey 25-31.

In the boys’ race, McCaskey improved to 7-2 with a 22-33 defeat of MT and a 20-41 win over E-town.

The Streaks outran the Bears 23-38 despite E-town’s Jesse Myers earning top spot at 16:49.

Tyler Stevens had an excellent pace and earned second place for MT at 17:00. Riley Horton’s 17:28 earned him sixth while Dieter Geib (18:11) finished 10th. Andrew Gusavage (11th, 18:16) Hayden Brennan (12th, 18:17) Luke Papadimitriou (14th, 18:41) and Charlie Mosner (15th, 18:47) kept a pace.

In a consolation match in Flight One, Kurtz edged Hempfield’s Grace Lehman 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

In Flight Two singles, Briner won 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, the Flight One semis included a win by Reynolds and Palandjian, defeating their teammates Briner and Henneman 6-0, 6-3.

GOLF Hamilton McNaughton came back from having shot a 78 in his first round at Briarwood East to shoot a 2-underpar 70 on Saturday in the District Three Golf Championships. Overall, the Township senior finished in a fourway tie for fourth and qualified for the PIAA East Regionals.

Also earning a ticket to the PIAA’s were Township teammates Graham Calhoun, whose scores were 79 and 76 in the tournament, and Connor Strine (78 and 81).

All three will compete in the October 14 PIAA East Regional at Fleetwood.

Basketball Team Posts Schedule The Ephrata Thunder, a basketball team that plays in the American Basketball Association (ABA), has announced its schedule of upcoming games.

The Ephrata Thunder was formed in 2019 when Pottstown native Stephen Bergman Sr., who was the owner of the ABA Pottstown Flames team for three years, decided to bring a professional basketball team to Ephrata. The team is led by first-year head coach Malin Morrison, the only female coach in the league.

The ABA has more than 150 teams in the United States. The Ephrata Thunder’s players come from Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and have a combined international experience of 10 years. The team has three players from the local community, including one from Ephrata.

Laurel Dance Company will conduct a shoe drive fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 13, from noon to 5 p.m. to raise funds for proper studio equipment and scholarships for students. Participants may donate gently worn, used and new shoes at the studio at 514 E. Main St., Ephrata.

Laurel Dance Company will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit the studio needs and allow Laurel Dance to provide scholarships to students who would otherwise be unable to participate in its dance programs.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners.

Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house the entrepreneurs’ families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti earned enough to send to her son to law school.
