Meta glasses do not help those with vision loss see better. Meta glasses are smart glasses that assist the visually impaired to overcome their challenges in alternate ways, navigate their worlds more effectively and make their lives better. “Technology can be a very helpful tool,” said Taylor

Newswanger, who’s been a low vision occupational therapist at VisionCorps for 10 years. “There are a lot of low-tech things that can be helpful. But (VisionCorps is) not just about technology. We’re about people and their needs.” VisionCorps, which is located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, does not sell meta glasses - they are available at the offices of local eye doctors

Life Is a Cabaret for Reji Woods Productions BY JEFF FALK

Cabaret is a French word. Translated, it means a small room, a little tavern, or a shop that sells spirits. Reji Woods translates it as a lively stage performance, an energetic floor show that features dancing, comedy and singing. “Audiences can expect a fun time full of joy and exuberance, excellent voices and killer musicians,” said Woods. “We truly love to connect with our audiences and raise the roof, and boy oh boy do we ever. Audiences are everything. They are why we do what we do, and without them Reji Woods Productions wouldn’t exist. Providing fun, quality entertainment is why I started this, and it’s all I have ever wanted to do.” Woods is the executive director, creative director and driving force behind Reji Woods Productions, a local cabaret-style entertainment company. In addition to cabarets tailored to audiences’ preferences, Reji Woods Productions produces youth programming, musicals, plays, showcases, concerts and revues. “I believe that entertainment brings us together in a very divided world,” said Woods. “Music shows us our commonalities as a people and helps promote emotional response. It honestly is the universal language. Theater can entertain and educate because we as theater performers hold a mirror to society, showing the current state of things while offering hope for a better tomorrow. Dance can bring awe like nothing can, with the simple use of the human body. All these forms

The performing arts can change lives.” Reji Woods Productions works with and collaborates with a diverse group of performers and artists from the Susquehanna Valley and beyond. Some are professionals, some are students and some are co-workers, but Woods considers all of them friends. “Many people know me as a performer in the area, and much of that work has been done under the Reji Woods Productions banner,” said Woods, a resident of Ephrata. “So, I hope that translates to knowing the company. our audiences a good time. We have fun on that stage every time, and audiences should feel it in their seats.” Reji Woods Productions, which is funded primarily through performance contracts, produces as many as 10 shows each year. Those performances are staged at cultural series, churches, performing arts centers, dinner theaters, retirement communities and private venues. “Our goal is to bring quality, theme-driven cabaret experiences to the Lancaster County area,” said Woods, “all while providing a variety of entertainment options for our community. We love to bring positive energy and joy.” Reji Woods Productions was born from a solo cabaret produced by Woods in 2015. Since then, it has realized a fair share of success by adopting a people-first, community-oriented attitude. “The best part of Reji Woods Productions is the people,” said Woods. “Whether it’s the people I share the stage with or the audiences we entertain, it’s all about connection, and that’s the best part. My favorite thing to do, however, is to perform. Singing and connecting with an audience is the lifeblood of my existence. Since I was 9 years old, singing has brought me immeasurable joy.” For more information, visit www.rejiwoodsproductions.com.

Prisby explained that Pennsylvania has eight designated Conservation Landscapes, including lands owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape is roughly the five miles on either side of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York counties. “This is our second time in the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape, and the decision to return largely was based on enthusiasm from program partners we worked with in 2024, asking to bring the event back to the region,” Prisby remarked. “When the event was here in 2024, there were great reviews from attendees and those that offered activities during the weekend.” Based in Harrisburg, KTA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building, maintaining and protecting hiking trails across Pennsylvania while promoting responsible use of the state’s natural resources.

Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities can enjoy a long weekend of guided programming set against the backdrop of the Susquehanna River when Keystone Trails Association (KTA) hosts its annual Hiking & Outdoor Weekend. The main event will run from Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25, with an optional extended weekend add-on beginning Thursday, Oct. 22. Base camp for the weekend will be the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, where KTA will be set up at the outside pavilion. “We welcome folks to stop by, whether they’re registered for the weekend activities or not, to meet us and hear about the work we do throughout the commonwealth,” said Kate Prisby, manager of events and programs for KTA. “Each year we work with volunteers to maintain hundreds of miles of PA hiking trails, offer skills-based training to prepare hikers for safe adventures outdoors, and we provide singleday and weekend events open to the public.” As Prisby explained, the weekend will feature more than 50 events throughout the region. “In the Columbia area, there are walking tours discussing the region’s Underground Railroad history, a film screening, a wildlife animal rehab program to inform

“If you’ve been hiking for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve walked down a trail that Keystone Trails Association has helped maintain,” Prisby said. “If you’re new to hiking, we love welcoming folks out on trails with us and helping people find others to get outside with.” Adding a fourth day to the event this year offers participants an opportunity to come early and take part in hands-on stewardship events or spend a night backpacking on the Mason-Dixon Trail. People are invited to come for one or all four days of the festivities, and about half of the activities are appropriate for families with children. Details of each activity note if the event is good for children, accessible or dog friendly, Prisby said. Registration is required for all events, and she noted that events fill up quickly, so early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. For a full list of activities, registration information and more, visit www.kta-hike.org/khow2026.html.

about safety and privacy. We break it down so people can see how easy it is to use AI.” While some people may think AI is a topic suited for businesses or people in the tech industry, it can be a helpful tool for anyone, she said. “We have a program called ‘AI at Home,’ where we show people how they can use AI for things like making a meal plan, setting a grocery budget, help with their résumé or creating an exercise routine,” Gilbert remarked. WOW programs can be one-time sessions or multi-week initiatives, depending on the topic. The program is self-funded through grants and proceeds from Goodwill retail stores. Recently, Sen. James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,”Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. Gilbert hopes to impact even more people in the future. “A lot of people want to learn

If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning, AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments. “This isn’t someone coming in with a PowerPoint, giving their presentation and then you never hear from them again,” she said. “Our first priority before educating people is building trust and building that relationship with them. We want to know, ‘Where are you at in your

journey with this topic? What do you know? How can we help you?’” With each program, WOW works to present information that’s relatable to the audience, whether that’s a group of senior citizens at a retirement community or a bunch of preschoolers. Gilbert noted that feedback the organization receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’”she said.“Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “Whatever the group wants, we can design our program to fit their needs,” Gilbert remarked. And WOW is always working to expand its repertoire of services. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in the country to do so, Gilbert said. “We’re working on breaking down the barrier of being scared or intimidated to use AI,” she said. “We talk

Newswanger also periodically presents meta glasses as a topic in VisionCorps’ quarterly webinar series VC Presents, which is currently available on www.youtube.com. “Meta glasses work with AI; it’s a camera and a phone,” said Newswanger. “It’s all auditory. The glasses connect to smart phones or tablets, where it gets information. It’s connecting to the internet, and it’s giving you that information. It’s like having Siri or Alexa on your face, and when it’s on your face, it can travel with you.” “You can tell the glasses to read a piece of paper for you,” continued Newswanger. “It can use GPS or help you navigate a crosswalk. This is a tool that can help you be more independent; it’s not taking independence away. It’s saying that because you can’t do it with your eyes, the glasses can do it for you.” The current form of meta glasses employs updated AI technology. Over the past two years, VisionCorps has assisted more than 100 meta glasses users. “We have people coming in and wanting to try them,” said Newswanger, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “We want them to be clients and to meet with someone from our occupational team. We don’t sell the glasses, but we can help them find vendors, and they can come back and we will help train them with their glasses.”

Ceili Band from pg 1

According to VisionCorps, there are nearly 5,000 adults in Lancaster County living with vision loss, and of those adults, 5.4% are over age 65. “(Meta glasses are) popular because they’re affordable,” said Newswanger. “Unfortunately, insurance does not view any visual aid as a necessity. It can be easy to use; hands-free is definitely nice, and they’re very stylish. There can be some scary things about AI, but Meta has put privacy features in place. It’s about teaching people how to be smart with AI. We teach you what not to do with them so they can continue to be used for good.” Meta glasses are also the perfect example of the role that VisionCorps plays in the Lancaster County community. “We just want as many people as possible (to) be aware that vision loss is a difficult journey,” said Newswanger. “It can be scary, but we want to provide guidance so they can be independent on that journey. Vision loss is an age-related disease. Older people didn’t grow up with technology, and sometimes they’re not open to technology. But even if you’re older, you can use it. A lot of our younger clients find it’s really helpful. There are a lot of cool features, and it’s an aid to things.” VisionCorps’ next VC Presents webinar is titled “Holiday Kitchen Confidence: Cooking and Baking With Vision Loss,” and it will initially be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. For additional information, go to https:// visioncorps.net.

The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from Lancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, flutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of ages and abilities,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Maryland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King, “whether you want to dust off

your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.” The Ceili Band was formed about five years ago, around the same time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”

will offer an interactive journey into North Indian classical music. The audience will explore Indian musical concepts of melody, rhythm, spiritual composition, and disciplined practice. Das and Gandhi will share how they believe this centuries-old musical tradition can connect people more deeply to culture, creativity, and well-being.

In addition, Das will present Raga, Rhythm, and Rasa on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. This intimate chamber music concert will explore the navarasa - the emotional sentiments of Indian classical music.
