MTEF Grants Help Move Students In Right Direction By Ann Mead Ash

The grants that the Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) voted to fund in the spring are now being implemented in the Manheim Township School District (MTSD) schools, with a number of them focused on helping students to have the best foundation for learning. According to Jenny Germann, executive director of the MTEF, the organization chooses to fund grants in full or in part based on how well the request fits MTEF’s criteria for innovation. “In our mission we state that we look to fund innovation in every aspect,” said Germann. “We aren’t just funding STEM innovation, but also for the arts and humanities, sports, and students with disabilities, (among others).” Germann said that the foundation works closely with the district to understand priorities. “We tailor our reviewing

of grants based on whether they fit with the district’s long-term plans,” she said. More than a dozen grants were chosen in the spring to be funded for this school year. A grant titled “Choosing the Right Path,” written by teachers Amy Houck and Beth Faehling, will help fifth- and sixth-grade students at Landis Run Intermediate School to take a break to recharge their mindset by providing space and physical, cognitive, and fine and gross motor engagement activities that allow students to release sensory buildup and return to the classroom ready to learn. Mental health was an important focus when MTEF was choosing grants. “School Climate Change Through FOR Clubs” will be implemented at the Manheim Township Middle School by Nicole Ellis and a team of others. Germann elaborated, noting that “FOR” stands for Friends of Rachel, which refers to Rachel See MTEF Grants pg 5
