Freedom Walkers Fight the Good Fight BY JEFF FALK

ne would be hard pressed to identify a more symbolic, empowering and compassionate Saturday morning. The Freedom Walk brings words to life, movement to ideas, unity to a cause and progress to a culture. “My favorite part is seeing individuals we’ve seen over the years who regularly receive our services show up and say, ‘This is the first step in my freedom,’” said Amy Thurston, the co-founder of Hope Inspire Love, who’s been the CEO for nine years. “Just seeing young men, fathers and their boys joining in. When I see them walk, I know no one knows their stories, but they do. Every year, we have people come up to

us and say, ‘Thank you for doing this for me.’” T he time is near for another installment of staunch human trafficking foe Hope Inspire Love’s inspiring trek for social change - the Freedom Walk. This year’s edition of the annual event will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. “Because it’s been so much in the news and so many nonprofits are offering services, there is so much awareness about human trafficking,” said Thurston. “What people don’t know about is the trafficking going on online. Part of our goal is awareness, while helping people take the next step in independence and freedom. We get calls all the time.”

One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “We try to promote more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the

In Lititz, Art Is an Occasion BY JEFF FALK

Concerts, cotillions, even fine dining. Art pairs well with everything. But good art also possesses the power to stand alone on its own merits. “My favorite part of this show is seeing all of the incredible creativity on display,” said Barb Daggett, the public relations coordinator for the Lititz Art Association (L AA). “Because artists constantly evolve, you never know quite what to expect from year to year. It’s a joy to witness the artists’ growth as they mature.” LAA’s former Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show is now the Lititz Art Show, and the annual event also has a new venue. No longer located at Lititz Springs Park, the Lititz Art Show will be held at historic Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, in downtown Lititz. This year’s show will be staged from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. The show is free to attend and the public is invited, but dogs are not permitted. “The goal of the Lititz Art Association is to continue providing an outlet for artists to display and sell their work in Lititz, where the show began 59 years ago,” said Daggett. “That aligns directly with our mission to foster and promote the arts in our community. “It will be a fun day for the whole family,” she added. “Of course, being in downtown Lititz, visitors can easily make a full day of enjoying all the attractions that Lititz has to offer.” The Lititz Art Show will feature the work of 84 artists - 25 of whom See Art pg 2

board of the historic Moravian Church worked with our organization to provide a beautiful new setting for our art show. This year, the association reviewed the show guidelines and agreed to expand the types of art accepted into the show. Even though this continues to be a juried fine art show, the expanding art fields prompted a less restrictive name, thus becoming the Lititz Art Show.” LAA was established as the Village Art Association by Floyd Hackman

Runners are typically highly self-motivated individuals. In this particular instance, SWAN 4 Kids is providing a bit of external motivation. “We’re helping kids of all ages who have gone through trauma, kids who have one or the other p a re n t i n c a rc e r ate d,” s a i d Brittany Torres, the director of development for Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN) Lancaster. “We’re doing what we can do to help the kids. But we’re not just giving a helping hand to these kids; we’re helping to shape their future.” The charitable arm of HARTZ Physical Therapy stages an annual fundraiser called “Fall Blast” for local charities, and this year the organization has chosen SWAN Lancaster as its beneficiary. The 23rd annual Fall Blast will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Warwick School District’s John R. Bonfield

Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The Fall Blast will include a 5K run/walk and a kids’ color run. “HARTZ Physical Therapy operates multiple locations throughout Lancaster County, including one near us,” said Torres. “They heard about what we’re doing. They have really good events; good people show up and they support different nonprofits. It’s a family-friendly event for everyone.” Breakfast will be served that morning, and goodie bags will be distributed to participating adults and children. Prizes will be earned by the top finishers, and awards will be given out in a number of different age categories. Runners can register for the 5K at www.hartzpt.com/community /fall-blast-5k or at the race the day of the event. “There are different opportunities, and people can get teams together,” said Torres, a resident of Ephrata. “It’s going to be super fun. We’re really creating a community

event where people can come together. Lititz is just a great town. It’s just a great environment in general.” According to SWAN, there are more than 3,000 kids in Lancaster who have at least one incarcerated parent. “The goal is to raise as much money as possible,” said Torres, “because every single dollar will go to help our kids.” SWAN Lancaster conducts

But if you don’t recognize it, then people won’t know things need to be done.” For Jim, volunteering is a Wenger family tradition; it’s a frame of mind he inherited from his parents. While it’s always been very important, it may have become even more important as he’s grown older. “It’s always been part of my life because my parents set that example,” said Wenger. “Once you get involved, you see other people doing more than you, and it becomes a growing snowball. The flip side of that is that you have to be able to say ‘no.’ If you can’t do it well, your efforts become watered down. “Volunteering does make a difference,” concluded Wenger.

Volunteering has given Jim Wenger a platform. Backed by actions, his humble message of hope, involvement and opportunity is meant to encourage others, promote thinking and affect change. “I think it’s important to be an ex ample and hopefully inspire others to volunteer,” said Wenger. “If this can do that, then I’m all in. There is so much to be done in our communities. The benefits of volunteering aren’t just the performing of a task; it’s connecting with people.” Wenger is a leader, a role model and a lifelong volunteer. Recently in Erie, Wenger was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Board Leadership Townie Award by the Pennsylvania Downtown Center for his dedication to the beautification and development of Lititz’s downtown. Wenger ser ved as the president of Venture Lititz’s board of directors from 2011 to 2023. “I volunteer to get to know people and make a difference in the community,” said Wenger. “If you get involved, you’re forced to interact. I think that’s w h at ke e p s o u r L i t i t z community grounded and a great place to live. There’s a large sense of satisfaction. Because of the work we put in with d o w n t o w n L i t i t z , i t ’s definitely different. Now, we have a variety of businesses. It just has evolved into other things. People

love to come and visit and check it out.” Wenger, a resident of Lititz and a manag ing partner of Derck & Edson, a local planning, engineering and design firm, is also an advocate for volunteering. He contends that there is a plethora of local volunteer opportunities out there and that there exists a certain level of disconnect between the charitable causes and interested individuals. “There are probably hundreds of volunteer opportunities,” said Wenger. “Schools, PTOs, ser vice organizations, nonprofits - they all need volunteers. There’s just a huge list of groups for people to get involved with. I just hear so many people say they need help. I think they all need help.” “I think all people have an opportunity to volunteer on some level,” he added. “Any b o dy can pick up trash. Can everybody lead a board? No. Some of these things don’t require skills, only effort. I think a lot of people don’t realize how many opportunities there are.” In addition to his work w i t h Ve n t u r e L i t i t z , Wenger also chairs the leadership team at his place of worship, Lititz Church of the Brethren. In the past, he served as a treasurer and team manager for boys’ and girls’ soccer programs in the Warwick School District. “I don’t do any of it for recognition,” said Wenger. “I like to be behind the scenes and get things done.

This year’s 19th edition of the unique gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits. “I’m always trying to make things run more smoothly,” said Knepper. “We change things based on feedback. Each year we’re just always trying to improve on how we reach people and engage with them. We’re connected with different nonprofits, and we try to promote the things that the nonprofits are doing. We all benefit when we’re connected to the community. We try to be a conduit of that.” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s gift fair will feature the work, missions and services provided by 35 nonprofits and 20 marketplace vendors. There will also be six food trucks, live music and book readings. “It’s an opportunity to catch up with a friend. It’s great for all ages,” said Knepper, a nurse who resides in East Hempfield Township. “You have to make choices easy for people. I think most people want to be conscientious gift givers or shoppers in general. The gift fair is a one-stop shop for gifts that make a difference. We’ve kind of done the screening to make it easy.”

Among the items available for purchase are charitable donations in a loved one’s name, instructional lessons for underprivileged individuals and gifts made from repurposed materials. “There’s a wide range of items you can find there,” said Knepper. “I think because the world feels so overwhelming, giving gifts like that can feel like tangible steps in the right direction. The gift fair has a very altruistic, collaborative, community type of environment. It always lifts my spirits. One of my strengths is building connections, and the gift fair is the epitome of that. Nobody wants to reinvent wheels, and the gift fair helps build bridges.” More than 1,500 people are expected to attend Gifts T hat Give Hope Lancaster’s fair. In the past, the event has raised as much as $30,000 collectively for the participating nonprofits. “I think they’re people who are conscientious about how they live their lives,” said Knepper. “They like to help other people. They’re people with a wide range of interests. I think the gift fair inspires a lot of different people.” The gift fair is the only event that Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster sponsors throughout the year. “I really do love seeing people come together and make connections,” said Knepper. “I really love all the behind-the-scenes work throughout the year. A derivative of illuminate, illumine is a word that means to shed light upon something. But there’s also a figurative interpretation of the word that suggests that the light will reveal truth and foster a deeper understanding. Catalyst Christian School’s upcoming program called “Illumine” is a first-time community outreach event, not a fundraiser. “It’s been on the top of our minds for about four years,” said Ashlee Zimmerman, Catalyst Christian School’s marketing director. “We wanted to host an event that takes what’s inside these four walls and introduces it to the community. It’s not a fundraiser; our heart for ‘Illumine’ is that it is something bigger and that it can be an amazing event. Next year will be our 50th year, and something that’s been around that long is cool.” Last year, that half-century-old community anchor located at 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz, became Catalyst Christian School. This year, the school’s enrollment of 348 students in preschool through 12th grade is higher than at any point in Lancaster Area Mennonite School’s history. The private, religionbased school is staffed by 60 employees, about 40 of whom are teachers. The school’s motto is “Igniting Faith. Forming Leaders. Launching Lives.” “Our role in the community is to come alongside parents to help them raise children,” said Zimmerman. “We are helping students to be formed, in every way. It’s not just about the academics; it’s also about their hearts. When we’re sending them out, we’re sending them out to be catalysts for the Lord.”

The Freedom Walk has evolved into Hope Inspire Love’s signature event, as both a fundraiser and as a vehicle for bringing awareness to human trafficking. “I look forward to it every year,” said Thurston. “Each of us has a part in this fight, you and I. Freedom Walk from pg 1 The Freedom Walk festivities will begin around 9 a.m. when people begin filtering in for registration. There will be time for conversation and camaraderie before participants are addressed about the depths of the human trafficking problem. Black T-shirts and signs will be handed out, and a huge group photo will be taken before the 2-mile silent walk begins. The day will also include live music, a simulation tent and information tables manned by other organizations that are opponents of human trafficking, and a lunch will be served after the walk. “It’s a celebration of the beauty of collaboration,” said Thurston, a resident of Manheim Township. “We have 30 minutes of stage time when we talk about the why. It allows people to understand what they’re walking for. We want to invite healthy conversation.” In single file, the walkers will process quietly and slowly from Musser Park around Lancaster Central Market and back again. The joyous and somber moments create a moving vibe felt by participants, victims and spectators alike. “It’s so beautiful because anyone can do it,” said Thurston. “It is literally a movement. Seeing our young people walk with signs that say ‘I’m not for sale’ is so powerful. We have to start when our kids are young. “It’s an outward action
