If the words “moms in prayer” call forth a picture of mothers of school-age children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, &
The Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum online auction is billed as “a great opportunity to do some armchair bidding.” The fundraiser is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, through Monday, Oct. 5. Prospective bidders may preview the auction items through Sunday, Sept. 27. The spring auction, which has been a tradition at Landis Valley, typically attracts hundreds of bidders, who travel many miles for a chance to bid on collector-quality items. In the spring of 2020, however, the event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Organizers decided to hold the auction online in the fall so that interested parties would not miss out on the event. A highlight of the auction will be a custom hand-built reproduction fowler rifle, circa late 1700s. In addition, a selection of handcrafted heirloom-quality items made for Landis Valley by talented artisans will be included. Traditional crafts, with many that are unique to Landis

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancaster-area GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8 to 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56-minute
documentary will be shown, and then a live, half-hour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we Girls on the Run - Lancaster, a youth development program, will host a free virtual forum and film, See Film pg 3 “Angst,” on Oct. 8, 9, and 10.

Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private, cyber, homeschool, and hybrid models - Moms in Prayer groups are finding creative ways to meet virtually or together with masks and social distancing or in Forry’s favorite format, porch praying. “We do social distancing on a porch, and we gather and pray,” explained Forry. “We are just about prayer,” she added. “Our vision is to see every school in the world covered in prayer.” Forry explained that meetings are one hour long and follow a schedule. “We start on time, and we end on time,” said Forry, who noted that a designated format helps keep groups on task. “We call it the four steps of prayer,” she explained. “It begins with praising God for who He is.” Forry said that time is followed by silent confession

Moms in Prayer meets safely and in keeping with social distancing guidelines on porches to pray for children in a variety of circumstances.
Forry oversees any districts that do not have an area coordinator, working with local leadership in that area. “We are praying for God to raise up more area coordinators to fill in the areas that have none,” said Forry. The traditional Moms in Prayer group prays for a single school, but there are also grandma groups, church-based groups, homeschool groups, military groups, prison-focused groups, and working moms groups. There are also language-based groups that speak a language other than English.

“We want women to be able to pray in their native language,” said Forry. Another group focuses on prodigal children. “A huge part of our ministry is supporting women who are standing in the gap and interceding for their children,” said Forry. Lastly, there is a time for intercession, where moms pick one child of their own to pray for, but the group also prays for teachers, school concerns, and the Moms in Prayer ministry. “I told my ladies last week that perhaps the most important part is at the very end when the prayer sheet says to remember that what is prayed in the group stays in the group,” shared Forry. “We absolutely stress confidentiality.” Moms in Prayer began in California in 1984 and is now active in 140 countries. Forry believes groups in Lancaster County have been active for at least 30 years. “It was formerly called Moms in Touch, but they had a name change because when you try to translate Moms in Touch to other (languages) it does not translate well,” said Forry, who added that the group is not just for mothers of school-age children. “We are a women’s ministry, so this is also for aunts and grandmas, and for any woman who feels compelled to pray for women in schools to impact them for Christ,” she said. According to Forry, Moms in Prayer International has several levels of leadership, including a state coordinator, regional coordinators, and area coordinators. In Lancaster County, Mary Beth Will oversees Warwick, Manheim Central, Donegal, and Elizabethtown school districts, while Lynn Herr oversees Columbia, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Solanco school districts.

saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families that wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotrlancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the

link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Morton, a local furniture maker based in Lititz, chose Pennsylvania Appalachian cherry when he fashioned the piece. The cradle features a classic carved hood, side handles, and a small carved heart, which is typical of Pennsylvania German furniture. The auction will also give area residents an opportunity to donate funds that will directly benefit the Farm Program and the Heirloom Seed Project. German immigrant history with living history interpretation of an authentic crossroads village of the early 1800s here in Lancaster County as well as educational programming provided by the museum. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. The fowler, which was created and finished at the museum by Denny Griffith, has a smoothbore barrel with a maker’s mark and a hidden notation referring to its creation at Landis Valley Museum. The hand-carved stock is made of curly maple with scrollwork, and it has a deluxe Siler lock. A woven period-style gun case will be included. The rifle is marked as No. 4 of the rifles created by Denny. Also to be included in the auction will be a fine-quality reproduction powder horn of the French and Indian War time period. It will be auctioned separately from the gun.
