St. Peter’s offering chance to sing “Messiah”
BY JEFF FALK
They’ve got the sheet music. They’ve got the technical and organizational expertise. They’ve got the professionals.
The only thing missing for St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is you.
St. Peter’s is searching for singers to join members of its choir for the Sunday, Dec. 17, production of Handel’s “Messiah” at the church at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. No auditions or prior knowledge of “Messiah” is required, but singers should be able to read music. Copies of the score will be available for purchase at the rehearsals, or singers can bring their own copy of the Novello edition.
Arts & Culture Series seeks to broaden horizons
BY JEFF FALK
Whata mundane existence it would be if everything were the same. Not only is variety the spice of life, but also diversity makes the world go round.
In association with Lancaster Bible College, the Trust Performing Arts Center’s ninth Arts & Culture Series is marked by diversity and variety and uniqueness.
The Trust Performing Arts Center recently unveiled its 2023-24 events for the spirited Arts & Culture Series. The 14 performances are a collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible
College’s school year.
Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances. “Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal arts this year.”
The Arts & Culture Series will launch on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m., with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The
series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.
“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”
Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano
Festival concert given by Tianxu
An on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spirituals on Oct. 29; performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1 and 2; a performance by soprano Samantha Hankey on March 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tanya Gabrielian on March 16; and a concert by the British vocal ensemble Apollo5 on April 5.
“Not only are our spaces beautiful,

“It’s a group activity. You learn and get to make friends,” said St. Peter’s music director Tom Berdos. “It’s a way to join with others and make a statement. Singing is physiologically healthy. It’s a chance to work towards a common goal. It can be a real moving experience for some. It’s different things for different people.”
Berdos and St. Peter’s have already secured 36 singers for the choir, but they’d like to add up to 60 more. On the day of the show, the choir will join with four professional soloists and a 24-member professional orchestra to produce the legendary oratorio.
Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s,and they will be conducted each Thursdayexcept Thanksgiving, Nov. 23 - up until the performance. Individuals interested in becoming part of the choir should email Berdos at tom.berdos@stpeterslutheran.org. See

Worship event will encourage unity across the county
“We have a core group on our singer list,” said Berdos. “We have a good start and a really good mix. We could do it with what we have now, but we’re trying to open it up to the community. We want the community to enjoy it. I’m the kind of person who likes to get everyone involved. If I’d get 100 singers, I’d find a way to get everyone up there.”
On the day of the performance, a final dress rehearsal will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m., just before the start of the 4 p.m. show. It is during that time that the choir’s skills will first be blended with the talents of the soloists and orchestra.
Berdos is producing Handel’s “Messiah” for the 20th time.

The fifth annual Reverberate worship night will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The free event will be held at the park’s outdoor amphitheater from 4 to 8 p.m., and it will feature live music, food trucks and worship activities from multiple local churches.
Multiple food trucks will be stationed beside the amphitheater, including Lickity Split, Chellas Arepa Kitchen, Blazing Swine BBQ, Cabalar, Halo’s Eatery and Walk-O Taco. Throughout the evening, bands will provide praise and worship music on the stage, and churches such as Lan-
caster Evangelical Free Church, Reality Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Bright Side Baptist Church will offer worship activities.
Water Street Mission, located in downtown Lancaster, partnered with multiple churches in Lancaster County to create Reverberate in 2019. The nonprofit’s primary goal was to promote service to the church, which is one of
“The biggest job is to train the choir,” said Berdos. “(‘Messiah’ is) typically not easy music. It’s going to take some work. But there are people out there who have experience singing. Experience definitely helps, although people who want to explore something new can try it.”
Normally up to three hours long, “Messiah” has been shortened to 75 minutes for the St. Peter’s perfor-
mance, which will highlight the Christmas music portion of the oratorio. The Dec. 17 performance will mark the 20th time that Berdos has produced “Messiah,” but it will be the first time at St. Peter’s.
“It’s like an opera without stage action,” said Berdos. “It’s about Jesus being prophesied. It talks about Christ being born. It’s about Christ reigning. ... In Handel’s day, he didn’t write it for the purpose of worshiping, but he used biblical themes.”

Focusing on mind, body and spirit
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
A community rock painting event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Noel Dorwart Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. The family event will begin at 3:30 p.m., and it will be open to the public and children of all ages.
Participants will meet at the picnic tables adjacent to the park’s parking lot. Rocks, paint brushes, paint and other supplies will be provided by donation. After participants decorate their rocks, they will be invited to walk through the park’s nature trail and place them along the route or take them home.
The event is being organized by Amanda Wallace, founder of nonprofit Manifesting Tranquility Inc. Wallace created Manifesting Tranquility in May with the goal of helping women who suffer from physical
illnesses or mental difficulties such as anxiety and depression. “I felt called to open a nonprofit to branch out into the community,” Wallace said. “I thought (this event) would be a great opportunity to bring people together and get out into nature.”
Wallace’s approach to promote physical and mental health is to address an individual’s mind, body and spirit simultaneously. She decided to hold the rock painting event to allow people to benefit from an artistic outlet and physical exercise at the same time.
Wallace also emphasized that being out in nature provides a plethora of benefits, such as getting a boost of vitamin D and serotonin. “When we’re dealing with mental health, it’s not just your brain,” Wallace said. “It’s the whole body and spirit. Nourishing them helps with these issues.”
In June, she organized Manifesting

Tranquility’s first event: a mindfulness walk at Noel Dorwart Park, where participants were encouraged to connect with their surroundings as they strolled through nature. Although Manifesting Tranquility is still in its developing stage as a new nonprofit, Wallace has plans for future events at other locations.
Manifesting Tranquility will use the donations collected at the rock painting event for scholarships for women’s athletics programs. The nonprofit will offer scholarships specifically for activities that align with its goal to promote harmony between mental and physical health. Wallace plans to offer financial assistance to allow women to participate in yoga and dance classes and train in martial arts. Wallace also hopes to offer online courses through Manifesting Tranquility in the future. “We want to offer events for women in the community to nourish themselves

its core values. The first event was attended by more than 1,400 people from a variety of churches and denominations. In 2020, Reverberate was moved to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was transitioned to Long’s Park in 2021 and has been held there since.
Water Street Mission has partnered with 77 churches for this year’s event, and it anticipates more than 2,000 attendees.
“We’re super excited to bring together a lot of diverse congregations to allow the community to unite for a night,” said Matthew Clements, marketing director of Water Street Mission. “Our end goal is that people are inspired to go out and love their neighbors.”
Water Street Mission is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services to people in need throughout Lancaster County. Water Street Mission is centered around Christian values, and it incorporates Scripture into its many community outreach efforts, such as residential programs, a community food bank, career mentoring and counseling services. The organization also operates a health clinic that provides medical, dental and behavioral health services for people who are in need of critical care but unable to acquire it otherwise. Services are offered to those who are uninsured, underinsured or experiencing homelessness. Water Street Mission’s emergency shelter program is designed to assist people who are in need of a stable living situation or who are navigating a crisis.
