Funds raised by space rentals at the annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 yard sale are donated to the IU 13 Social Work Fund, which can cover a variety of needs of IU 13 students. “Social workers (recently) used the funds to help a family facing eviction,” noted Carrie

Bruey, IU 13 supervisor of autism solutions, which provides individualized psychological supports for children with autism.

The 2018 sale, which is the fund’s largest benefit event, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Burle Business Park on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster.

The rain date for the event will be Saturday, Sept. 22.

In 2017, the sale attracted nearly 60 vendors. The number of vendors taking part in the fundraiser has grown steadily since 2011, when the first sale was held. Most years, at least 50 vendors have rented spaces at the event.

According to organizers, vendors will

offer personal care products, makeup, crafts, jewelry, DVDs, produce, and handmade items, among others. Bruey noted that vendors selling a variety of merchandise take part in the event, including representatives of homebased businesses and families selling outgrown clothing, toys, and other household items.

Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, remembers how the 5K Fun Run/Walk that kicks off the event got started. “The run/walk was (organized with) WellSpan (Family and Pediatric Medicine of Rothsville) to promote the idea of being healthy and getting the local people out to walk or jog,” said Marxen, who noted that the event now raises funds for Wellspan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications.

All nearby merchants will remain open for business. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region, printing demonstrations, food trucks, and live music. A highlight of the fair will include the attempt at setting a new world record for printing with potatoes, which will take place between noon and 3 p.m. Participants of all ages may design and cut their own potatoes on-site prior to printing.

New this year, a beverage garden will feature a libation crafted from a recipe by Benjamin Franklin, who among many other occupations was a pioneering printer in 1700s Philadelphia. A percentage of the sales of the beverages available in the garden will go to finishing construction at

Free whoopie pies have been featured at past events, and a local Italian restaurant plans to offer samples of its food.

For 2018, the featured performer will be singer Steven Courtney, who will entertain

children with his original music at 1 p.m.

Courtney, who is based in Lancaster County, has performed more than 6,000 concerts and won a number of awards for his children’s music. His songs are now familiar to multiple generations. Marxen noted that local contributors have made it possible for Courtney to perform. “We are thrilled that because of the generosity of our business donors, we are able to continue to offer quality entertainment at Rothsville Community Day,” she said, noting that past events have brought other local well-known acts such as Ryan and Friends to the venue.

Author Kent Annan will give a talk called “Living the Golden Rule With Imagination” at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Through stories of his work in Haiti, Annan will challenge attendees to slow down in the practice of service as they become people who do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Annan is author of “Slow Kingdom Coming,” “After Shock,” and “Following Jesus Through the Eye of the Needle.” He is co-founder of Haiti Partners and a senior fellow at Wheaton College’s Humanitarian Disaster Institute.

Annan will also facilitate a workshop for church mission teams on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. titled “Choosing Focus.” Churches are invited to send their mission teams to explore the five practices of “Slow Kingdom Coming: Practices for Doing Justice, Loving Mercy, and Walking Humbly in the World.”

Teams will have time to dialogue and reflect on what they are doing in mission and to consider how slowness and focus might enrich their church’s ministry.

The sixth Lancaster Printers Fair will be one for the record books as new events including a world record attempt - have been added to the printing event for people of all ages that will be held in downtown Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14 and 15.

New this year, “Printing on Penn Square” will offer a number of activities from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. The activities will include a demonstration by nationally known itinerant printer Chris Fritton, custom coaster printing with the Heritage Press Museum, and custom T-shirt printing. Attendees may also grab a special printmakers’ beverage at a nearby restaurant and help to raise funds for the construction of the .918 Club’s Heritage Press Education Center by participating in an auction of prizes donated by local businesses.

The Printers Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15. The 300

The letterpress event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. Print-related vendors hailing from as far away as Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York will be represented at the Printers Fair.

The keynote speaker for the dinner will be Catherine P. Downing, author of “Sparks of Redemptive Grace,” which recounts her experience with a family member

struggling with mental illness.

Downing’s topic will be “Sparks of Redemptive Grace: Seeking and Seeing God Amid a Loved One’s Mental Illness.” “Downing and her husband have walked this journey with their now-adult son who struggles with bipolar disorder,” explained Ames. Downing is a trained teacher with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Family-to-Family classes.

She is a former missionary who

currently works with faith-based nonprofit organizations as a communications consultant. She has been lauded for her compassion and vulnerability in sharing her story.

Special music for the event will be provided by Peggy Grabowski, and local radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies.

Ames noted that a plated meal, with entrée options including pecan-crusted salmon, chicken cordon bleu, and a vegan gluten-free option of quinoa

black bean saute, will be served along with salad, bread, and beverages. Ames added that a choice of desserts will include chocolate cake and a seasonal option.

A freewill offering will be received at the dinner. “Our goal is to raise close to $51,000,” said Ames, who added that sponsorship options are available.

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club will hold the 17th annual Neffsville Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manheim Township Community Park, Petersburg Road (Route 722). The event will take place rain or shine.

Mr. and Mrs. Drake are the parents of Shirley, wife of Dennis Bushong, of Lancaster; Judy, wife of Gary Bowser, of York; and the late Rowena Rowe.

They have five grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Mr. Drake served in the U.S. Army in Panama during World War II. He retired from Armstrong World Industries.

He previously worked at High Steele Industries, Lancaster Malleable Castings, Moore’s Chicks, Georgia Pacific, and as a farmer.

Mrs. Drake graduated from Saltillo High School. She worked as a hairdresser, as well as for Hamilton Watch and Hubley’s Toys, and served as a nurse’s aide at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The couple attends Hempfield Church of the Brethren.

In addition to raising funds from space rentals, IU 13 employees sell food at the event.

This year’s menu will include breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, baked goods, and cold beverages at lunch time.

Approximately 200 IU 13 employees help organize the yard sale. About 40 employees are on-site on the day of the event, and many more donate food to be sold.

Helping families avoid eviction is just one way the Social Work Fund aids students. The fund also helps cover clothing costs or medication for IU 13 students. Funds may also be used to cover field trip expenses,

school supplies, school lunches, bus passes, groceries, gas, and other necessities. Bruey noted that last year’s yard sale raised nearly $3,000 for the fund.

Other fundraisers that the group holds during the year include pretzel sales, a dress-down day, a dinner at a local restaurant, and a paint night.

Following the event, IU 13 organizers arrange for a local organization to pick up leftover items that vendors no longer want. This year, a company will take donations for the American Red Cross.

The panel discussion is the third segment of JFS’ community education initiative. Coffee and desserts will be available at 6:30 p.m. The discussion will take place from 7 to 9 p.m.

The panelists will discuss ways to successfully attain necessary and appropriate services for students with special needs while avoiding unnecessary conflict and litigation. The discussion will be moderated by Maureen Westcott, executive director of The Arc of Lancaster Lebanon. The panelists will include a parent advocate, a school administrator, a recipient of special needs services, a school psychologist, and an attorney.

Sudan Rebirth Ministry Plans Fundraiser The Sudan Rebirth Ministry (SRM) will hold its fifth annual fundraiser, From Lancaster With Love, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gypsy Kitchen, 555 W. James St., Lancaster, on the campus of Lancaster Theological Seminary.

SRM was created to provide support for and empower the people of South Sudan through education. The organization is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country. The purpose of From Lancaster With Love is to raise money to fund educational scholarships for students from kindergarten through college to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in South Sudan.

Sudan Rebirth Ministry was founded

by Jacob Guot, the Rev. Kent Kroehler, and others from First United Methodist Church and Lancaster. Guot, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, was one of thousands of boys who escaped a Sudanese civil war

by walking more than 1,000 miles across east Africa. Guot grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. He was able to immigrate to the U.S., become a citizen, and earn a GED diploma. A chance meeting with Kroehler, then the minister at First United Methodist Church, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years and graduated from Lancaster Bible College. He then moved to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary.

Guot has been able to serve his hometown people in Bor, South Sudan, through SRM and a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.”

That was because the previous Friday’s game was postponed due to weather conditions and was played on Monday night. “That gave us only three days to prepare for Central Dauphin after we played Dallastown,� Evans pointed out. “We talked about endurance all week as we prepped for one of our toughest games on the schedule.�

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Township Edition in District Three on Saturday and came away with a 5-3 defeat of Cumberland Valley, improving their record to 2-0.

Andrea DiSomma scored a hat trick, converting a penalty kick in between two goals that came late in each half.

DiSomma scored in the 40th minute and again in the 79th minute of the game while the PK came four minutes into the second half.

Having a part in three goals was Nolan Ross, who recorded three assists.

Colton Peterson scored the Streaks’ first goal of the match. The Eagles evened the score on an own goal by the Township defense four minutes later. However, DiSomma’s first goal of the game made it a 2-1 halftime advantage for the home team.

Shea Miller-Smith made it 4-2 after the Eagles had cut the deficit to only one goal. Miller-Smith’s goal came at almost the midway mark of the second half.

Quinn McCarty held off CV with seven saves in goal.

TENNIS With victories over McCaskey and Warwick, the Streaks improved to 4-0 on the year, including a 3-0 mark in Section One. Tuesday’s match at McCaskey was a 7-0 victory in which Avery Palandjian

and Emily Gavin opened with an 8-1 win at doubles. Seniors Olivia Sterenfeld and Megan Welsh were winners at number two doubles by the same score. Lauren Poff and freshman Sophia Yost won the third doubles 8-2.

Camille Henneman won the first singles 6-1, 6-2. In the next three singles matches, Julia Briner, Nicole Honrade, and Scotland Reynolds each posted straight set wins of 6-0, 6-0.

Playing on their home court on Thursday, the Streaks blanked Warwick 7-0. In this match, the doubles pairings were Garvin and Reynolds, Lauren Martin and Sarah Pestana and Welsh with Sophie Georgelis. All three matches ended with an 8-0 MT win.

In singles, Briner and Honrade both had 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins.

Henneman triumphed 6-1, 6-2 at first singles while Palandjian won the fourth singles 6-2, 6-0.

GIRLS’ SOCCER The Streaks opened the season with a 4-0 victory over Hershey in a nonleague road game on September 1.

“It isn’t the desired approach,” said head coach Terry Law. “We played at Hershey and are not scheduled again until Thursday the 13th. We lost some field time due to the heat and the rain. But we’ve been able to have some walk-through times in the gym.”

Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity will showcase innovative design ideas through home renovations during its third annual Renovators’ Home Tour on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The selfguided tour will feature a lineup of 14 homes in Manheim Township’s Country Club Estates neighborhood and the city of Lancaster that exemplify clever use of space in a diverse selection of home styles.

In addition to exploring homes, tour guests will have the opportunity to talk with the homeowners about the decisionmaking process when updating their living space. In some cases, contractors who performed the work will be on hand to answer questions. Renovations range from do-it-yourself projects that homeowners have tackled themselves to more extensive redesigns of entire rooms or floors.

The Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA) is inviting new members to audition for the 2018-19 performance season. WYPA was founded by the Musical Art Society, a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for serious young musicians to develop performance experience, stage presence, concert demeanor, and verbal and musical presentation.

By recommendation of their teacher or one of the WYPA counselors, membership is extended to qualified students between the ages of 10 and 19. Monthly meetings are held on the third Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. in September, October, November, January, February, and March, with public recitals in December and April. Students will perform works they are studying and receive helpful

critique from counselors and students.

A Music in the Round Master Works Edition will take place on Sept. 15 in the Atrium at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

A casual reception will begin at

A Lounge 42 concert will occur on Sept. 15 at 8:42 p.m. in the Atrium at the Ware Center. A 30-minute Allegro performance will be followed by music from the Nielsen Family Band. The event is
