Event Dona Fisher Shares to Celebrate Change of Pace Message Everything Italian

I

t’s kind of like when producers change a popular book into a successful movie. Only this time, a popular Bible studies session is being turned into a successful book.

Dona Fisher has enjoyed so much success with Change of Pace Bible studies that she’s decided to share its message with a broader audience.

“My prayer when people read my book is that they will understand the beauty of reconciliation and the need to break the chain of generational sin,” said Fisher.

This year’s edition of the annual Change of Pace Bible studies will be held every Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The Bible study sessions will begin on Thursday, Sept. 17, and run through Thursday, Nov. 19.

The Change of Pace Bible studies are free to attend, and a freewill offering will be accepted. Free child care will also be available at the church.

For one day in the middle of September, everyone in Lititz is Italian.

“For me, (Italian culture is) special because so much of what I experience is this love of family, community, being joyful together, and it’s usually around food,” said Justina Latura, one of the organizers of L’Italia Festival.

“There’s always food. There’s so much food, and pride and love in the food. The culture is tied to eating, and all the food is made with love.

“It’s very similar to the food culture we’re so proud of in Lancaster,” continued Latura. “I feel like it’s an easy comparison.

Tradition is so important in Italian culture, and it’s important in Lancaster as well.”

In a very short time, L’Italia Festival has taken its place alongside all of the great events that Lititz hosts. This year’s edition of the annual celebration of what it means to be Italian will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, downtown on East Main Street, between Cedar Street and Cherry Lane.

The street festival is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

“It’s vibrant, it’s festive, it’s fun,” said Latura. “Italian culture is bubbly, gregarious, and you want to be a part of it. It’s high energy. It’s friends, it’s family.

It’s just for the community, to support the Italian community.”

The guest performer walks onstage without ever having seen the script. The script contains blanks that the guest performer and audience work through together, gradually creating a story that could only have emerged from those particular people in that particular room.

“In a world that can feel so divided, there is something beautiful about gathering in one place and generating a fresh story together,” he added. “It’s playful, joyful and deeply communal. No audience member is ever forced to participate, but the opportunity is there for everyone who chooses it.”

Each performance of BLANK will last about 75 minutes, and the interactive presentations do not include intermissions. Among the onstage performers are local directors, teachers, community leaders, doctors, presidents and CEOs, managers, founders and speakers.

“The atmosphere will be warm, intimate and playful, with seating on three sides of the central playing space,” said Nugent, a resident of Lancaster. “Warm lighting and a simple table at the center of the room will create a feeling of a shared gathering - a room buzzing with energy and plenty of unexpected goodness ahead. The audience is essential because the people in the room help shape that night’s story.”

BLANK is the brainchild of Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour and originally premiered in 2015.

“We all need experiences that interrupt the ordinary - moments

of beauty, shared joy and connection that help us feel fully alive,” said Nugent. “Prima’s role is to be a resource, a place where you can step away from the predictable, encounter something fresh and leave with more energy than you had when you arrived.

“Prima offers intimate theatrical experiences that awaken curiosity and create joy,” continued Nugent. “For artists, it creates opportunities to collaborate, experiment and develop new work. For Lancaster, it helps make possible a community where theatrical work can be born.”

Nugent and his wife, Diana, founded Prima Theatre in 2010.

The theater presents nearly 100 performances, concerts, productions and special events each year.

The next production Prima Theatre will host is “Illumination” - a candlelit holiday experience featuring rich voices and extraordinary live music in the round - which will open Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and run through Wednesday, Dec. 23.

“More people discover Prima Theatre every year, but it still feels like one of Lancaster’s bestkept secrets,” said Nugent. “The space is intimate and contemporary, with no faraway seats. You are close enough to see every expression and feel the energy moving through the room. You do not need to consider yourself a ‘theater person’ to belong. Many firefighters choose to do the climb in their full gear.

Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. They will circle it five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

“We’re just trying to carry on the motto that people developed back then to never forget,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “The way we can keep the memories there is to have this once a year.”

Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up. Online registration has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event.

Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers.

“A lot of them do,” Yuill said.

“Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.”

In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New

York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland.

Similar memorial events are held throughout the country, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. For those unable to attend the event, a donation link is listed on the aforementioned website.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event usually raises around $20,000.

“They always had a counseling services unit, but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they have up in New York City.”

Yuill helped establish Lancaster’s stair climb 16 years ago to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Bucca. Yuill met Bucca at a training program in New York before Bucca was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. “(Ronald) and his partner were driving out somewhere when they heard what was happening, and they responded to the World Trade towers,” Yuill said. “Him and his partner had just gotten a lady out of the towers when Ronnie went back in (for) somebody else, and that’s when it collapsed.”

L’Italia Festival began in 2022 as a good idea. It’s blossomed through the commitments of its organizers.

“There was a small group of Italians in Lititz; they met around these dinner gatherings and a desire to speak and promote the Italian language,” said Latura. “We have a large group of Italians who have immigrated to the Lititz and Lancaster area. It was like, ‘Hey, why don’t we have this picnic in the summer?’ And 3,000 people showed up.

In 1976, a new Christian school opened in Elizabethtown. Mount Calvary Christian School began with 100 students and has since grown in size while its Christ-centered mission has remained steadfast. The school will mark its 50th anniversary with an auction and celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. The festivities will be held at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown.

Friday’s activities will begin with a barbecue dinner by Harvey’s BBQ, starting at 4:30 p.m. People will have the option to dine in on the main campus or take their food to-go from the West Campus, located at 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown. The meal will feature pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a dinner roll and a drink.

About 80 different churches are represented in the school, Griest said.

He attributes the school’s longevity to both God’s presence and the dedication of Mount Calvary Church.

“The theme of the year is ‘50 Years of God’s Faithfulness,’” he stated. “He has proven Himself to be faithful in a number of different ways to the school. We’re also thankful for the support of Mount Calvary Church.

We’re one of the only church-run Christian schools in Lancaster County, and the church has been unwavering in its support of Christian education.

As a result, they’ve really helped to make Christian education affordable to families in the region.”

“Saturday will have more of a homecoming feel,” shared superintendent Jared Griest. “We’ll have a Kids Fest with Touch-a-Truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then we have a number of different athletic events happening during the day.”

Games will include JV and varsity volleyball, as well as two varsity soccer matches. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chosen Brew Coffee Truck and a food stand operated by the high school will serve food and drinks.

The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be a Celebration Program, beginning at 4 p.m. in the school gym.

“This will be a one-hour program for people to celebrate the 50 years of the school,” Griest said. “We’re collecting ‘50 Stories of Mount Calvary’ right now, and we’re going to use those stories to talk about how God has been faithful to the ministry of the school.”

From 5 to 8:30 p.m., a variety of food trucks will be on-site, and the soccer games will be held, with a homecoming celebration between the two games. The evening will conclude with a drone show above the soccer field.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the ministry of the school and will provide financial assistance to students.

“We serve about 775 students in preschool through 12th grade,” Griest said. “We’re one of the largest Christian schools in central Pennsylvania.

“You think of 343 people, when you start reading their names off, it takes over 20 minutes to do,” Yuill said. “That’s when the enormity of the whole things hits you.”

UDS service dogs were in attendance at a previous year’s golf tournament to raise funds for the canine training program.

Change of Pace from pg 1 “We start our morning with a light breakfast and worship time singing together,” said Fisher, a resident of Manheim Township.

“Bible studies encourage us to read God’s word, and reading enhances our wisdom with change of pace.

We will also have a book swap this fall. Do you have a stack of books you have read and would enjoy sharing with others?”

This year’s Change of Pace Bible studies will offer two courses of direction, “One in a Million” by Priscilla Shirer and “God Won’t Leave You There” by Anne Graham Lotz and daughter Rachel-Ruth Lotz Wright. Each of the studies contain video sections, which will be followed by small group discussions.

As many as 100 women from all over Lancaster County attend the nondenominational ladies’ Bible study.

“They are ladies who (are) seeking to deepen their walk with the Lord,” said Fisher, “and who enjoy

the sisterhood of other ladies who will pray for them and encourage them.”

The Change of Pace Bible studies and book are both based on Fisher’s personal and sometimes tumultuous relationship with her mother. The content focuses on God’s power, love and forgiveness through multiple generations, and the book tells some of the powerful personal stories of the women who found their ways to the Bible study over the last half century.

The book, “Change of Pace: Fifty Years of Shepherding God’s Sheep With Love and Power,” has already sold more than 4,000 copies and is currently in its second printing. The book can be purchase by searching for it on Amazon.

Now, Fisher is considering the possibility of turning her story and her experiences with Change of Pace into a novel.

39th Annual “Showcase in Sight and Sound” Marching Band Festival Thursday, October 8, 2026 Event begins 5:45 PM (National Anthem) First Band plays at 6:00 PM Manheim Township High School Stadium There will be a few food trucks on hand, candy grams, etc.

This year’s Showcase will be presented in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition, bringing talented marching ensembles together for an evening of music, creativity and spectacular performances.

A longtime community tradition, Showcase in Sight and Sound is proudly supported by the Manheim Township community and the families and supporters of visiting bands. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the stadium for another memorable evening!
