A Family Tradition MTHS Student Has Soccer In Her Blood
anheim Township High School (MTHS) junior Liza Suydam is a member of the only Central Pennsylvania youth soccer team to win a US Youth Soccer National Championship. Liza shares that honor with other young women from Dauphin County and York County, as well as Lancaster County. The team, known as the PENN FC 04 Lightning, competed in the U17 division, first winning the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association State Cup in March and then traveling to Hammonton, N.J., for the East Regional Tournament from June 25 through July 1, where they placed first and advanced to the championship. Next, the team traveled to Florida, engaging in three days of roundrobin play from July 20 to 22. The Lightning emerged victorious and

rested on July 23 to be ready for tournament play the next two days. By July 25, it was down to the Lightning versus a Utah team that the Lightning had bested previously. Liza, who plays center attacking midfielder, said that the team developed a new strategy against its competitor. “We knew we had to defend them differently,” she said. “We controlled much better.” The game ended 2-0, with Liza providing both assists. Liza’s talents run in the family. Her father, Clayton, who also coaches the team along with Bill Becher and Jason Pelletier, played soccer in high school in Mifflin County and then at Eastern Mennonite University, and her older sister, Aubrey, plays at Saint Francis University. Clayton noted that Liza has been playing since a young age and that he has always been involved in coaching. By age 8, she was playing with Penn Legacy in Hempfield, but by 14, she had
moved to play with the Lightning. Clayton said that he had been impressed by the team environment created by Becher when Becher coached Aubrey. “It was a great fit for her to transition there,” said Clayton. Becher was impressed with Liza’s tournament play, describing her tireless movement on the field and lauding both her offensive and defensive moves. “She scores goals. She sets up goals. She is relentless at winning the ball back for us,” he has said. The MTHS girls’ soccer team won the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament in 2020 during Liza’s sophomore year. Clayton noted that she was an All-Star and was named to the Big 11, which are selected from all over the LancasterLebanon League. “I hope to play Division I soccer in college, but I haven’t made any decisions,” said Liza, who noted she will probably major in business. “I think Stan Deen was a remarkable man in the way he encouraged and helped other people,” said Dale Bradley of Inspiring Films. “He defined his life with that.” Dale has moved to Lancaster to make “Brave the Dark,” the story of the late Garden Spot High School (GSHS) teacher Stan Deen and the troubled young man he took in during the 1980s, Nate Busko, now Nate Deen. “But there are lots of men and women like that, so this is an everyman story,” continued Dale, who See Stan pg 3
On July 24, when Lora Brock led a team of eight volunteers from Ephrata Community Church (ECC) to work on a home on Maple Street in Lititz as part of Love INC’s Compassion Project, she knew the church members would be removing insulation, weeding, and painting. Brock did not know, however, that she and other team members would be leading a neighbor to the Lord. A team from Ephrata Community Church, working in partnership with Love INC, completed repairs on a home in Lititz.

Participants in the Better Bones Better Balance classes exercise and learn together.
St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, and Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, will resume weekly Better Bones Better Balance classes on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. Classes take place at St. Matthew and at Grandview in alternating months; the September classes will be held at St. Matthew. The classes are open to the public and will be taught by Tim Kauffman, a physical therapist in Lancaster, and Beth Kauffman, a physical therapist and board-certified geriatric clinical specialist. The focus of this exercise program is to apply research-based clinical science to improve bone health and to prevent falls. In addition to the social and exercise components, questions and discussion are encouraged. Techniques to
reduce injuries from a fall are taught, and handouts are offered. The program was started in 2009 at Kauffman Physical Therapy and expanded to the churches in 2018. A donation is suggested, and the proceeds will go to the churches to support their missions and operations. In the past, donations from the class were made to the International Red Cross Committee and VisionCorps in Lancaster, among other community services. The classes will adhere to the COVID policies of each church, which include masks and social distancing. Proof of COVID vaccination is required. For more information, call St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 717-394-9607 or Grandview Church at 717-394-6887.
Lititz UMC Sets Fall Tailgate Party Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., will host a Welcome Back Fall Tailgate Party at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the lower-level parking lot. Attendees may bring tailgating games, food, grills, and chairs.
At 7 p.m., the movie “Facing the Giants” will be shown in the parking lot. For further information, contact Lititz United Methodist Church at 717626-2710. More information about the church is available at www.lititzumc.org.
Tradition from pg 1 Liza credits some of the team’s winning ability to its dedication to practice, noting that during COVID-19 restrictions, the girls completed drills during Zoom calls. Liza also visited local soccer fields with her sister, shooting and completing drills that involve running. She said the Lightning was
practicing at Lower Dauphin Middle School by November 2020, and when it was too cold, at an indoor facility. But Clayton sees something more in the team culture. “This team really does love playing together,” he said. “These girls work so hard for each other, and I think that’s a big reason why we’ve seen this success.”

Stan from pg 1 runs Inspiring Films with his brother Grant. “Good movies need to resonate with people,” he added. “You need to know people like (the characters in the film) or be like (them) or wish you were like (them).” Grant discovered the true story behind the film about five years ago when visiting Lancaster County looking for possible film subjects. He met Nate, who works at Sight & Sound, and heard his story. Nate was orphaned at a young age after a tragedy involving his parents. He became part of the foster care system, eventually leaving as a teenager only to find himself homeless living in the car he had purchased with wages from a part-time job. Nate was using school showers and eating raw corn on the cob from the fields where he parked his car at
night when Stan offered him a chocolate bar after class. When Nate found himself in jail only weeks later, Stan visited him, offering him a place to live and a second chance. “Brave the Dark” will begin filming in Lancaster this month, with scenes due to be shot at GSHS on weekends and holidays. Derek Dienner of Make/Films, who knew Stan, knows Nate, and graduated from GSHS in 2003, is co-producing with Inspiring Films to be sure Lancaster County authenticity and flavor are in the mix. To that end, Dienner has talked to the current owner of the Ritz in New Holland about including the marquis in some scenes and to ELANCO School District about using a retro gymnasium located in the middle school. Dienner reported that a
chain of talented writers, directors, and actors has formed around the script for the story. “Grant got the script to director Damian Harris, who fell in love with it and brought it to Joe McDougal, who is now assistant director, and he got Julio Macat, director of photography (involved),” explained Dienner. The movie will star Jared Harris as Stan, and Nicholas Hamilton as Nate. Residents of Lancaster County who knew Stan have risen to the occasion, reporting on how the Garden Spot Performing Arts founder influenced their lives. “A lot of the people who were impacted by Stan are involved
in some way in this film,” said Dienner. “This movie is getting made because everyone knows who Stan was.” Dienner added that at the heart of the film is the importance of fatherhood. “That’s what it’s about,” he said. “It shows the love of a father.” This is Make/Films’ first feature film, and having the chance to work with a story that packs meaningful influence is important to Dienner. “(This story) has the potential to bring the fatherhood of Stan and the (redeemed) character of Nate to the world in a way that can make people say, ‘I can make a difference,’” he said. “What better way to start?”

The Tapestry Cello Ensemble will kick off the 2021-22 Starlight Tea Concert series on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. All attendees are encouraged to wear a mask. The ensemble is a recently formed group of professionals who are passionate about exploring the growing repertoire for cello chamber music. The group comprises Nancy Baun, Amy Visscher, Sean Neidlinger, and Daniel Shomper. For the past five years, all members have taught at Cellospeak, a summer workshop for adult amateur cellists. It was from the delight of performing together that Tapestry was founded, sharing original music and arrangements of masterworks from the Renaissance, selections from the American Songbook, tangos, classical themes, and Broadway tunes. Tapestry members have
Love INC from pg 1 “This man came over and asked if we could work on his mother’s house,” said Brock, who told the man she would give him ECC’s number to arrange for a future visit. “The next thing he said was, ‘Will you pray for me?’” said Brock, who added that the team quickly surrounded the man and began lifting him in prayer. “He knew Jesus died on the cross for sins, so I asked, ‘Would you like to pray to receive Jesus as your Savior?’” When the man did, the team celebrated with him. Katie Leaman, communications and donor development coordinator for Love INC of Lancaster County, said the team that visited the home on Maple Street in Lititz that day was one of many working in the county, including those working in Ephrata and Manheim. “We have the following churches participating in projects at about 70 different sites,” reported Leaman, who said that Chiques Church of the Brethren, Erbs Mennonite, Erisman Mennonite, Manheim Brethren in Christ, Newport Church, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ of Manheim, and White Oak Church were also involved in projects during the mid-summer. repairs to contact them. Most requests involve home repairs, landscaping, or painting. She added that those making the requests are often elderly and cannot do the work themselves or do not have the financial resources to hire someone to do it. Those who make requests complete an intake process with a Love INC volunteer, and then Minnich contacts churches connected with Love INC to see which ones would be able to meet those needs. “Each church we are partnered with has a church ministry coordinator,” said Leaman, who noted that about 170 Lancaster County churches are engaged with Love INC. Leaman explained that Love INC is educated in the gifts churches are ready to share. “We reach out saying, ‘We have someone in the community with a particular need, and I know that your church has someone who is gifted in that area,’” she said. Churches usually respond with a date when a church group can visit a home to complete repairs. Reflecting on the experience the ECC group had in Lititz, Leaman remarked, “Part of our hope in this is that the church community is connecting with the homeowners and the neighbors.” Brock told Leaman that the man who asked for prayer also needed transportation to church, and that she was already working with him to help meet that need. More information about Love INC may be found at https://loveinclancaster.org.
