Father-daughter team creates children’s book together

Thereare so many meaningful things that a father and daughter can do together. Collaborating on a book is one of them.

That’s precisely what Corey Fogleman and his daughter Piper did, and the result of their collective talents is the children’s book “Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem.” Corey is the poem’s author, and Piper is the book’s illustrator.

“It is a dream come true,” said Corey, a family physician who lives in Manheim Township. “To be able to partner with your child and give her responsibility, it’s meant a lot to me. It’s been an opportunity to see her grow up. It was a great project for both of us. I’m hoping we will be able to look back on other things we did together.”

“I thought it turned out well, a lot better than we expected,” said Piper, a freshman at Manheim Township High School. “Everything just works out really well together. It captures

everything that makes Lancaster so great. It introduces everything that Lancaster has to offer.”

Corey’s poem is 18 stanzas in length, and each stanza has a corresponding illustration from Piper. Among the illustrations are Piper’s depictions of Lancaster County destinations like the National Watch and Clock Museum,

wrote the poem for my kids, so they will remember all the cool things to do in Lancaster.”

Originally, Corey had approached an artist about providing the accompanying illustrations for his poem, but when she was unable to do it, Piper stepped up and said, “I can do this.”

“I think, in a way, it brought us closer,” said Piper. “We put an idea together and made something great.”

Long’s Park, Central Market, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania and Musser Park, sites that occupy sentimental places in the Foglemans’ hearts.

“Our children were very young when we moved to Lancaster in 2010,” said Corey. “We started exploring the area, and we kind of fell in love with the area. That’s what I wanted to celebrate in the poem. I

“We’ve never done anything like this before,” said Corey. “Piper is kind of coming into her own as an artist. She can see things through ’til the end. I was worried it would be a lot of pressure for her.”

The Foglemans self-published “Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem” and then distributed it to several area bookstores and a few local visitor’s centers. They are currently working their way through their second shipment of books.

Corey and Piper mutually decided to give all profits from the sale of

At Overlook Golf Course, a premium is placed on shot making. That’s what makes the local course a true test of a golfer’s abilities.

Located at 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, Overlook Golf Course is a 6,110-yard test that plays to a par of 70 - 35 each on the front and back nines.

“We’re old,” said Overlook’s director of golf, Ken Ord. “We’re almost

100 years old, and we’re not like the modern golf courses, which have length. We’re on 105 acres, and that’s not a lot for a golf course.”

He noted that the course is known for its conditioning.

“Another one of our strengths is location,” he added. “We’re in the heart of Lancaster County.”

Overlook is one of eight public golf courses in Lancaster County and one of only two that are municipally owned. Operated and maintained by Manheim Township, Overlook Golf Course hosts nearly See Overlook golf pg 2

Square dancing classes planned

Two introductory square dancing classes have been announced. The classes will teach modern square dancing to beginners.

The Swing Thru Square Dance Club will sponsor a class on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola.

The DoPasO Square Dance Club will sponsor a class on Monday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. The parking lot and entrance are located at the rear of the building off

Highschool Avenue. Square dances can be done to all kinds of music, such as songs by Lady Gaga, John Legend, Bruno Mars, or the Eagles. The dress code is casual, and attendees are advised to wear comfortable shoes. No partner is needed.

The introductory events are free, and classes will continue each week on Thursday or Monday evenings for a fee.

For more information about square dancing events in Pennsylvania, search for “Square Dance in PA” on Facebook.

39,000 rounds of golf each year, and its state-of-the-art driving range is used heavily as well.

Overlook also serves as the home course for the Manheim Township and Warwick high school golf teams.

“It’s got to be one of the nicest municipally owned golf courses I’ve ever seen,” said Ord. “The best part of the golf course is definitely the greens. They were all redone 25 years ago, and there’s so much undulation (to them).”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Resource family orientations set

COBYS Family Services will offer a new process for resource family information sessions. Interested families will receive a recorded webinar, allowing participants time to take notes and develop questions prior to participating in a live meeting.

One-and-a-half-hour live sessions will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. virtually; on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 8 a.m. virtually; and on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. in

person. All in-person sessions take place at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster.

The information sessions are designed for families that want to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care. During each program, families will receive an introduction to the roles, expectations, and approval process for COBYS resource families.

The sessions are free and place no obligation on those attending. Child care is not provided. For more information or to reserve a space or receive the recorded portion of the program, contact a COBYS resource home specialist at 717-656-6580 or careforkids@cobys.org. To learn more about COBYS, visit www.cobys.org.

“There are a lot of people who don’t know that Overlook is owned by Manheim Township,” Ord continued. “We have a budget, and we present it to the township every year. I run it like my business, like I want to make money. It’s a great partnership between the golf course and the township.”

With five par-3 holes and three par-5 holes, Overlook Golf Course is relatively flat. But trouble does lurk in the form of sand, water and especially trees, and to score

well, players must constantly concern themselves with ball placement.

“We’re a welcoming golf course,” said Ord. “We want a lot of people to play here. We want people to come here and enjoy themselves. It’s a fun golf course.”

Overlook Golf Course was built in 1928 by Abe Dombach as a way to help promote the game of golf to everyone. In that way, Manheim Township has stayed true to the vision of the course’s founder.

“The township is always looking out for what’s best for Manheim Township residents,” said Ord. “The golf course fits right in with that. We’re here to support the residents. We love when the residents come out to play.”

“We’re getting people from everywhere,” Ord added. “They’re not only playing golf here, but they’re also practicing. We’re trying to grow the game.”

With its recently introduced ghost tours, the Lititz Historical Foundation is seeking to shed light on past events and tales that had formerly been shrouded in mystery. The ghost tours have 300 years of Lititz history from which to spin their yarns.

“We’re telling about strange phenomena that are unexplained and ghost stories,” said Lititz Historical Foundation president Cory Van Brookhoven. “Some people say there are ghosts in Lititz. There’s a possibility there might be. I think that some things can be explained, and some things can’t. We’re not coming to conclusions. We’re letting the people on the tours decide. We’re just telling the stories.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation will conduct its

family-friendly, 45-minute ghost tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. from Sept. 6 to Nov. 4. Hosted by guides, the ghost tours will visit 10 locations on East Main Street in the borough, and each location has its own story.

The tour is designed to raise money to help defray the Lititz Historical Foundation’s operating costs.

“I don’t want to give too much away,” said Van Brookhoven. “Some people may hear creepy sounds. The stories are from the past, most are from the last 150 years, but some as recent as 20 years ago. It’s an opportunity for people to learn a side of Lititz that is not often talked about.”

Among the ghost tour stops are a local tavern from the 1700s, a mysterious grave located in the basement of a Lititz shop, the site of a former Revolutionary War hospital and an authentic corpse house originally constructed in 1786.

“This is not a ghost hunt; it’s a ghost tour,” Van Brookhoven said. “With ghost hunts you have equipment, like recording devices.”

The ghost tours will be held at a time of the year when some people celebrate Halloween.

“It’s something that, if successful, we want to bring back as a seasonal event,”

“As a physician and a parent who enjoys poetry and creating things, there was a part of me that won-

dered if I would be able to keep doing things like this,” said Corey.“I want to inspire kids to keep doing things they enjoy, even if it’s not part of their jobs. If you want to do something well, do something you love.”

Living history tours posted

LancasterHistory will present living history tours with the theme “First to Rise and Last to Retire: Meet Wheatland’s Domestic Workers” on Saturday, Sept. 2. The guided tours will commence every hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding with the final tour at 3 p.m.

LancasterHistory’s living history tours are an interactive experience that can incorporate historical tools, activities, and dress to give observers or participants a sense of stepping back in time. During “First to Rise and Last to Retire,” attendees will learn about the daily activities of Edward Bolger, Mary Smithgall, and Rosanna Gordon - the people who worked behind the scenes at Wheatland, home of the 15th U.S. president, James

Buchanan. The tours will feature brief meetings with domestic workers of the 19th century, set against the backdrop of Wheatland’s period rooms. Each room will feature a dedicated staff member enacting his or her role, providing hints of his or her future endeavors, and subtly detailing the class separation of the era.

This is not a regular general admission tour, and it will not provide information about Buchanan himself.

To purchase tickets, visit www.lancasterhistory.org and click on “Events” or call 717-392-4633. Reservations are strongly advised, as walk-in tickets might not be available. Members can enjoy the tour free of charge but must reserve their spots in advance.

Event to celebrate African American culture

The African American Cultural Fair and Parade will be held on Tuesday to Saturday, Sept. 5 to 9, at Reservoir Park, 832 E. Orange St., Lancaster. This celebration of African Amer-

ican culture will include live music, food, games, and rides. The parade through Lancaster city will take place on Sept. 9. For more information, visit www.aacal.org/fair.

Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-toschool-themed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies.

Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who can-

not pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.

For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasengarb @schreiberpediatric.org.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will present a series of train tales for children during a new, twicemonthly Story Time With the Educator program. Designed for children age 2 through prekindergarten and led by a museum educator, each story time will feature a reading of a children’s book and a hands-on activity, craft, song or poem.

Story Time With the Educator is included in the regular museum admission and will be held on the first Tuesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. and repeated on the third Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. Fall

story times will be presented on Tuesday, Sept. 5; Friday, Sept. 15; Tuesday, Oct. 3; Friday, Oct. 20; Tuesday, Nov. 7; and Friday, Nov. 17.

In September, the program will include a reading of “A Lucky Dog: Owney, U.S. Rail Mail Mascot” by Dirk Wales, with a craft activity of creating a mail bag.

Individuals must register on Eventbrite for Sensory Hours to participate in the Tuesday sessions. Registration is not required for the Friday sessions.

For more information, contact museum educator Juliette O’Connor at ju oconnor@pa.gov or 717687-8628, ext. 3025.

Van Brookhoven noted.

Initially, Van Brookhoven began giving his own personal ghost tours of Lititz in 2016. Just recently, he lent his script and research on local ghosts to the Lititz Historical Foundation.

Early responses to the ghost tour have been favorable.

“We’re finding it’s a lot of locals,” said Van Brookhoven, “and some are tourists. We’ve got a ton of

bookings coming up.”

The ghost tours are just another example of the Lititz Historical Foundation creatively incorporating local history into its fundraising efforts.

“As a nonprofit, everything is a fundraiser,” said Van Brookhoven.
