On Aug. 5 through 7, Manheim Township High School (MTHS) marching band members met at the school from 3 to 9 p.m. They returned on Aug. 8, 9, and 12 through 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to practice the fall drill for their show called “Fire and Ice.” Practice was held in the outfield of the school baseball diamond because of construction that is occurring on the property.

Bible2School Adds Two More MTSD Locations 18th Annual Rothsville Day Planned By Ann Mead Ash
In 1979, Section 1546 of the Pennsylvania School Code was amended to allow children to be released from public school for religious training of their choice. The Manheim Ministerium responded by organizing Weekday Religious Education

The 104-member band, under the direction of Scott Siegel, will perform at several exhibitions and take part in parades in East Petersburg and Ephrata this fall, as well as at football games. Showcases that the band will take part in will include Lancaster Catholic High School on Saturday Sept. 21; Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown on Saturday, Oct. 5; Ephrata High School on Saturday, Oct. 19; and McCaskey High School on Saturday, Oct. 26. MTHS will host an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 28. According to Mason Norris, who shares drum major duties with Yasmin Nicholas, the show opens with the song “Fire on High” by Electric Light Orchestra. The first piece will transition into “Ritual Fire Dance,” which is a concert band piece by Manuel De Falla. The second half of the show will feature “Creep” by Radiohead, which will transition into a classical piece called “Songs See MTHS Marching Band pg 5
(WRE). About a decade ago, after the organization changed its name to Bible2School, the released time program expanded into the School District of Lancaster (SDL), where the program was embraced. Since then, Bible2School has moved into a number of Lancaster County school districts, and the program even has affiliates in Johnstown and school districts in Delaware. During the 2019-20 school year, Bible2School will be offered in two additional Manheim Township School District (MTSD) elementary schools. A second-grade class program will be See Bible2School pg 3

Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, is grateful to all the area residents and businesses that participate in the annual event. “This is all made possible through the work of many volunteers from the various churches in the area,” said Marxen, “but it would also not be possible without the local businesses who support us financially and allow us to bring in this level of entertainment.” The 18th annual Rothsville Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Forney
Field on Church Street in Rothsville. This year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration at Forney Field on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. The 5K is sponsored by WellSpan Family and Pediatric Medicine in Rothsville, and it raises funds for WellSpan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, hosted its annual Red Cross blood drive on Aug. 10 and 11. This year’s drive exceeded the goal to collect 148 units by collecting 198 donations. These donations will be able to help 594 people in need of blood. Each guest who donated at the drive received a complimentary ticket to the 2019 Renaissance Faire season. More than 3,400 units of blood have been collected at past Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire blood drives. The next weekend, Aug. 17 and 18, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire welcomed beneficiaries of nonprofit organizations to the festivities with free admission. Approved beneficiaries included 501(c)(3) religious, educational, or charitable organizations. The organization applied through the Renaissance Faire’s website for the complimentary admission and were reviewed and approved based on financial need. The Renaissance Faire has distributed more than 6,500 tickets for the 2019 Community Outreach Program. The helicopter candy drop, which is open to children age 12 and under, will take place at 10:45 a.m. Other Rothsville Community Day activities will include an egg toss, a wheelbarrow race, a pieeating contest, and a threelegged race. Participants will be split into two age groups: children and adults. Prizes will be gift certificates to local businesses, said Marxen. Door prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the day. Food items that will be offered free to attendees will include grilled hot dogs. Free whoopie pies have been featured at past events, and Caruso’s restaurant plans to offer samples of its food. For 2019, the featured performer will be character juggler Chris Ivey, who will entertain children at 1 p.m. Ivey has entertained audiences for the past 15

Bible2School from pg 1 held beginning on Thursday, Sept. 26, for Neff Elementary School students. A program for Bucher Elementary School students will begin on the same day. Additional Bible2School offerings in the MTSD include a program for second- through fourthgrade students at Schaeffer and Nitrauer elementary schools. Bible2School programs are available for children in second, third, and fourth grades. Representatives of the program will meet participating students at their school and walk or bus them to a nearby church or community center where the program will take place. Most programs are held during the time when children are have lunch or recess at
the school. The Bible2School released time curriculum includes worship, prayer, reading the Bible, games, and crafts, along with lots of small group discussion time. Volunteer adults will meet with the same group of five or six children every week with the goal of creating a safe and open place for children to ask questions, think about what they are learning, and consider how to apply principles to their lives. Released time programs are designed to reach children on a spiritual level with the goal of increasing a student’s sense of safety and emotional well-being. Representatives of the organization report that parents and administrators notice a difference in students after they
begin attending Bible2School programs. Children have been reported to display a sense of calm after having opportunities to pray about issues on their minds with group leader. Students who are less stressed may also focus better so that academic performance can improve. In addition, during released time, the students use reading skills to obtain information and context, which they then are asked to process for application to their own lives, which involves complex thinking. Students at Neff Elementary will be bused to Westminster Presbyterian Church. The program will meet during the 12:101:05 p.m. lunch and recess period. Meredith Steidler, who is the volunteer site coordinator for Neff, would love to have more volunteers to help teach and work with
student groups as listeners. Bucher Elementary School students will be bused to Grace Evangelical Congregational Church in East Petersburg during the school lunch period, which begins at 12:10 p.m. Coordinators of the Bucher program would also be happy to welcome more volunteers to help out. Friendship Community’s 19th annual Irvin C. Enck Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the

Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming

Sheckells Named Administrator Paul Davis Holds Food Collection Landis Communities recently hired Jennifer Sheckells as the director of risk management and compliance. In this new role, she will lead the development and management of policies across Landis Communities to ensure all entities are compliant with regulatory bodies and best practices. She will also coordinate programs such as risk management, and compliance. She will support all employees of Landis Communities affiliates through education and serving as a resource for concerns related to safety, regulations, and quality care. Sheckells has worked in many roles in her 25-year career, including in administration at retirement communities and health centers. Since 2009, she worked as a compliance specialist for Friends Services for the Aging in Blue Bell. In that role, she provided risk management and compliance services, such as on-site visits, to many local retirement communities, including Landis Homes. Sheckells received her Bachelor

Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania in Lancaster was among the franchise office winners in the 2019 Paul Davis CAN Charity Drive. Paul Davis Restoration Inc. staff members at the company’s Jacksonville, Fla., headquarters and franchise offices across the U.S. and Canada participated in the fundraising initiative to collect cans of food for people and pets. During June, employees at participating offices collected cans of food and made structures using the cans. On July 1, participants posted photos of their structures on Paul Davis’ Facebook page, and voting via “likes” on the posts began on July 5. On Aug. 1, the winning structures were announced for prizes and office parties. Winners were recognized for the greatest number of cans collected, the best images,
and the greatest number of staff members participating. Each office donated its collected food to a local charity. Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania, which has the franchise code LLCO, was recognized in the contest. “LLCO Animal House” won an office party for collecting and donating the most food, with 1,188 cans. The office donated its collected cans to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that meets the needs of families and animals in the community through the operation of a pet food bank, low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination programs, and support of animal rescue through an adoption program. Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected 1,381 pounds of nonperishable items for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Helping Harvest, formerly Greater Berks Food Bank. The Royer’s Stems Hunger event, which took place from June 22 to July 6, has collected more than eight tons of food since it began in 2011. Donors received a free carnation for each food item they contributed, up to six per visit. Besides Royer’s 16 stores, eight Drayer Physical Therapy Institute locations in the area served as drop-off locations. MT School Board of Directors The September School Board of Directors Work Session will be held on Thursday, September 12th at 7:00pm in the District Office Boardroom. The School Board Voting Meeting will be held on September 19th at 7:00pm in the District Office Boardroom.
MT School Board Saturday Morning Conversations The MT community is invited to attend the Manheim Township School Board Community Conversations held at the District Office from 10:00am - 12:00pm on designated Saturdays throughout the years.
On August 19th, MTSD staff listened to an inspiring presentation from Mr. Manny Scott, an original Freedom Writer whose story is told in the 2007 hit movie, Freedom Writers. Mr. Scott energized our staff with his authentic, inspiring messages of hope and making a difference in the lives of our students each day in our schools. Listening to his incredible story, and hearing messages of ways to make a difference was an amazing way to kick-off the school year for the staff.
