A number of band members are in the spotlight during the show. Andy Holscher and Jay McCardell perform trumpet solos, and Brayden Minnich performs a flugelhorn solo. Cameron Ribbich has an alto saxophone solo. Percussionists who perform alone include Henry Zellers on tenor and Lucy van Harscamp on xylophone. The show includes a snare duet between Owen Troop and August Beaulieu, as well as solos by Brogan Greer, percussion captain, and band vice president Jack Schrader during “Wellerman.” A color guard feature brings together a trio of guard captain Priscille Juin on rifle, Izzy Bodnar on saber, and Lily Kilgore, who also performs a solo, on flag. Juin, who also has a saber solo, noted that more weapons than usual are being utilized in the drill. She also stated that the dancers are more interactive and that a basket toss, where one of the color guard is thrown into the air and caught, is included.
To keep spirits raised during the final week of camp, theme days were held. Mutiny Monday reflected the pirate theme, as did Tropical Tuesday. White Lie Wednesday found members telling humorous tales about themselves, and section T-shirt Thursday featured decorated shirts made by members. Friday was reserved for a family picnic and traditional volleyball game between seniors and staff.
MTHS band director Scott Siegel noted that he and his staff endeavor to make sure each show is different from the year before. “We try to do something unique so a member who is in four years does four uniquely different shows,” he said.
The marching band will perform “X Marks the Spot” for the first time for parents, alumni, and the community on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at MTHS, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and there will be free admission. The Good Humor truck will be on-site, and guests may purchase an ice cream treat prior to the start of the show.

Students from Paula’s School of Baton in Mount Joy recently participated in the Drum Majorettes of America National Competition 2022, which was held in Aiken, S.C., from July 16 to 20. Teams from the studio won a total of 17 first and second places at the event.
Students at the baton studio participated in both team and individual competitions. The senior team took National Outstanding awards in pom, dance and dance twirl. The senior strut team also claimed a National Outstanding award. The Overall National Outstanding Team was awarded to the senior dance twirl team. A crowd of construction partners, Landis Quality Living board members, donors and newly signed tenants recently enjoyed a morning at Landis Place to participate in a topping-out gathering. Topping out is a builders’ tradition that celebrates a milestone during a construction project.
High Construction project superintendent Jim Kline noted the tradition goes back as far as the 700s, when builders in Scandinavian regions would place a sheath of grain on top of the building for good luck.
During the ceremony held on Aug. 2, all those in attendance signed a steel beam that was then lifted by a construction crane and set in place in the northwest corner of the building, becoming the first of the roof beams to be set. A prayer of thanks and gratitude was offered by the Rev. Elizabeth Soto.
The building will contain apartments aimed at the middle market as well as for those with less than the area median income. Landis Quality Living is in the process of raising at least $550,000 to bring down the amount needing to be financed, making it possible for at least eight of the apartments to be available at lower-cost rents. If more funds are raised, the number of low-cost apartments will increase.
When finished, Landis Place on King will bring 79 apartments and ground-floor retail space to 239 W. King St., Lancaser. The opening is set for March of 2023 and already has renters for about 30% of the apartments, even without having a model to show.

Lancaster County Office of Aging Offers FREE Classes For Seniors
CHRONIC DISEASE SELF MANAGEMENT
A FREE 6-week program that is done over the telephone with a small group of Lancaster County residents age 50+ who are living with a chronic disease. The program is structured to help participants better manage their ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, and heart disease. Weekly topics include finding better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue, doing easy exercises to help improve strength and energy, learning the appropriate use of medications, and improving nutrition. Classes will be conducted by phone on Tuesdays, from 1:00-2:30PM, September 13-October 18. To register, contact Ellen Weekes at 717-299-7924.
GERI-FIT
A FREE strength training program for Lancaster County residents age 60+ that improves balance, flexibility, and strength. Classes incorporate seated exercises, hand weights, and resistance bands. Most classes run from September thru June and participants can join anytime. Classes are currently being held at the following locations:

POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS
This FREE 6-week educational program is designed to give Lancaster County caregivers age 60+ the skills to take care of themselves while caring for someone else. Class participants are educated in stress management, communication strategies, and use of community resources. Classes will be held at Ephrata Church of the Brethren, 201 Crescent Avenue, Ephrata on Mondays, from 6:00-7:30PM, September 19-October 24. To register, contact Ellen Weekes at 717-299-7924.
TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS
A FREE 8-week program for Lancaster County residents age 60+ that is designed to improve movement, balance, strength, flexibility, and relaxation. Classes include core movements, advanced extension movements, and breathing instruction. Intended for individuals with or without arthritis and appropriate for people with mild/moderate/severe joint and back pain. Classes will be held at Lancaster Rec Center, 525 Fairview Ave, Lancaster. Level 1 classes will be held on Tuesdays, 1:00-2:00PM, September 13-November 15. Level 2 (advanced) classes will be held on Thursdays, 1:00-2:00PM, September 15-November 17. WALK WITH EASE
A FREE 6-week program for Lancaster County residents age 60+ that meets 3 times per week. This program is appropriate for individuals living with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions. The central activity of the program is walking but it also includes health education, stretching and strength exercises, tips on managing pain and stiffness, motivational strategies and techniques to overcome barriers. Classes will be held at the following locations:

FREE Virtual Senior Center
Lancaster County Office of Aging is the only Pennsylvania Agency on Aging that provides a virtual Senior Center. LCOA Virtual Connections, offers Lancaster County residents age 60+ an opportunity to connect with other seniors to play games, take technology classes, create art, learn a musical instrument, exercise, or learn new information. Our FREE center offers programs and provides the supplies needed for the art and music classes. Participants must have reliable internet service, a computer, laptop or a tablet and ZOOM downloaded on the device.
