The 100 members of the marching band, including 22 color guard members, practiced the piratethemed show during band camp, which was held at the school from Aug. 8 through 12 and from Aug. 15 through 19. “X Marks the Spot” features pirate costumes for the color guard and includes a variety of songs with themes that allude to pirates or sailing the ocean. The two songs that open the show are Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” by Antonin Dvorak and “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphys. Next is the ballad, which consists of “My Jolly Sailor Bold,” a traditional sea shanty, followed by “Zombie” by The Cranberries. The final segment is “Wellerman,” another traditional sea shanty as performed by Nathan Evans, and finally, “He’s a Pirate” by Klaus Badelt, which audience members may recognize from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

In 1973, Landis Homes, 1001 E. The event now benefits the Caring Fund, which was created in 1983 to help Landis Homes residents who had exhausted their financial resources. See Landis Homes pg 3

“What’s cool about this show is that we have a lot of different things going on at once,” said woodwind captain Merola Atta. Salfrank agreed, noting that there is a point when the woodwinds have a long hold while members of the brass are marching backward. Drum major Maggie Spealman said that the juxtaposition calls attention to the woodwind music at that point.

Now, as the cast of about 50 rehearses, he looks forward to bringing the musical to the local stage. “The challenges of ‘Ragtime’ are in its strong content,” said Calderon, who quickly added, “(The show) leaves you with hope for a future where there can be harmony and unity.” See Servant Stage pg 5 See MTHS pg 8

The annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will have a set registration fee, with registration available online in advance or at the stadium on the day of the event, beginning at 8 a.m. The stair climb will begin at 9 a.m. and will include EMS personnel, firefighters and other first responders, but members of the public are also invited to Participantsparticipate. in the memorial will scale the steps of the stadium as they wind around its interior five times, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each participant traditionally carries an image of a first responder who was killed on the day of the attack as he or she endures the long climb. “Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.” Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11. Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of “Theduty. stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad. Three years ago, organizers began spreading the festivities out over several days. An online auction of items will begin on Sunday, Sept. 4, and end at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. The auction may be accessed by visiting www.landishomes .org and clicking on “FellowshipLandisDays.”Homes residents have used their talents to create items to be auctioned. Jackie Myers has made several quilt tops. Standing near an orange, blue, and white Wentworth pattern quilt and one with an abstract pattern of Canada geese she completed, Myers told of how she and her family received help in the form of quilts at their home in Belgium following World War II. As a child of 6, she found herself wanting to learn quilting. She came to America in 1961, but she did not learn quilting until she retired. “I started to make them to give back from what we had gotten,” saidWesMyers.Newswanger taught industrial arts at Lancaster Mennonite High School. When he came to Landis Homes, he put his talents to work building benches and coffee tables using live-edge cherry wood. “I would call it a bucket bench or a porch bench,” said Newswanger of one piece he made. A coffee table he calls River of Glass, which features two pieces of live edge cherry held together by metal and covered with glass, will also be auctioned.ElvinStoltzfus worked on a number of pieces that will be go up for bids. Stoltzfus was tapped to refurbish a Benjamin Brubaker dollhouse with parquet floors made up of 7,000 individual pieces. Stoltzfus had the skills to work on the house because he began working on segmented bowls and other wooden items in 2015. He is contributing several of his works to the auction. “I cut all these pieces out, and they have to be glued together in layers and put on the lathe,” Stoltzfus explained. “I was fascinated with this (process), and I started turning (pieces) out.” A tent will be erected in front of the Crossings area of the campus, and on Wednesday, Sept. 7, a bydonation pancake breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. Later that day, an ice cream social and a hymn sing will be held. Friends of the Woods and Wetlands will give a presentation at 6 p.m., which will be repeated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. On Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m., a parade featuring the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be held. The live music that evening will be based on a Liederkrantz theme with songs in German and English. On Saturday, Sept. 10, yard sales and a craft sale will be held, and food items will be sold. Children’s activities will be held, and quilts will go over the block at a live auction from 1 to 2:30 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., the Brass Pocket Band will play and there will be a 50th anniversary celebration with cupcakes. frompg 1 Wes Newswanger with one of the live-edge wooden items he crafted for the Landis Homes Fellowship Days auction.

On the first Friday of August, Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, hosted the opening of local artist Tama Etra’s collection titled “Mixed Bag.” The display featured multiple pieces that utilize materials like leftover junk mail and unwanted magazines to create an array of mixed-media collages. Primarily working with acrylic paints for most of her career, Etra began exploring the world of collaging and mixedmedia work over the last 10 years. “Mixed Bag” also includes an acrylic painting and several alcohol ink pieces and showcases the artist’s work beyond the conventional. Etra was born and raised in New York, where she studied commercial art at New York Technical College and had her artwork displayed in multiple galleries. In addition to her work as an artist, Etra pursued a career as a counselor specializing in women with addictions, where she used her love for the arts to help clients benefit from connecting with creative expression. She moved to Lancaster in 2005, where she continues to leave her mark on numerous different mediums. Etra will teach classes at Mulberry Art Studios this fall. The “Mixed Bag” collection showcases one of many types of talent that have been featured at Mulberry Art Studios. The creative space has served as a host for artists of all kinds for nearly 35 years, welcoming painters, musicians, dancers and sculptors, and even contributing to the start of the First Friday tradition downtown. “My vision was to transform the city of Lancaster using creative arts and positive self-expression,” said founder and owner April Koppenhaver. “As a little girl, my family traveled around the country, and I saw several vacant warehouses in decay. Artists always need space to exist, so it was a nobrainer. I wanted to present all of the arts under one roof.” Koppenhaver herself is a writer, photographer and painter, and she hopes Mulberry Art Studios will serve as a model for cities across the country to foster the arts in their about“There’scommunities.alotofexcitementthecityandalotofhistory. I want people to keep recognizing and investing in the artists that helped to transform it into such a desirable place to live,” Koppenhaver said. “Thirty-five years ago, it was not this way. Big industries were not investing in the city, and artists affected Lancaster for the better.” For more information on Mulberry Art Studios and its events, visit artstudios.com/.https://mulberry

Servant Stage will present “Ragtime” at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on three consecutive weekends, Fridays through Sundays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 2. Shows will be at 7 p.m. on Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. The musical follows three groups of people who are in New York state when the story begins in 1902. Coalhouse, a musician played by Josh Green, and Sarah, played by Kylie Jo Smith, are from Harlem. Tateh, a silhouette artist, played by Andrew Zahn, and his Little Girl, played by Kate Zahn and Lauren Watts, have recently arrived from Latvia. The third group is a wealthy New Rochelle family that has made money in fireworks. The family members are known only as Mother, played by Sarah Zahn; Father, played by David Diehl; Little Boy, played by Luke Stone and Julian Ford; and Mother’s sibling, Younger Brother, played by Tyler Hoover. Calderon noted that the story focuses on a specific moment in time and what lies ahead. “It follows these groups on their journeys when they are starting to intermingle,” said Calderon. “It’s a story about the last moments when these groups were so separate and so foreign to one another. It comes with a lot of sensitive issues, and the biggest challenge is communicating to the audience that it’s not something that only happened 120 years ago.” Calderon called “Ragtime” “colorful,” noting that the show is mostly sung and includes historical figures such as Harry Houdini, vaudeville entertainer Evelyn Nesbit, and J.P. Morgan. “These characters are woven through the story to tell us these things actually occurred,” he said, pointing out that the Henry Ford character sings a song about conveyor belts that discusses how mass production has begun to speed up manufacturing. Even the ragtime music itself would soon be sped up into jazz. The cast includes several children, and Calderon noted that this is intentional. “(The) children are sort of a representation of the new century in the things they say and the way they act,” he said. Although the groups represent different peoples and experiences, Calderon emphasized what they have in common. “All the parents relate to Tateh and his Little Girl and his fear of losing her, and they find themselves relating to Mother, who is feeling a pull to become something (more),” he said. “In the final picture, it shows members of each of those groups together and Performanceshopeful.”are paywhat-you-will, and donations are welcome. For More Information On Church Listings And Rates, Call Justin at 717-492-2533 A crowd of construction partners, Landis Quality Living board members, donors and newly signed tenants recently enjoyed a morning at Landis Place to participate in a topping-out gathering. Topping out is a builders’ tradition that celebrates a milestone during a construction project.High Construction project superintendent Jim Kline noted the tradition goes back as far as the 700s, when builders in Scandinavian regions would place a sheath of grain on top of the building for good luck. During the ceremony held on Aug. 2, all those in attendance signed a steel beam that was then lifted by a construction crane and set in place in the northwest corner of the building, becoming the first of the roof beams to be set. A prayer of thanks and gratitude was offered by the Rev. Elizabeth Soto. The building will contain apartments aimed at the middle market as well as for those with less than the area median income. Landis Quality Living is in the process of raising at least $550,000 to bring down the amount needing to be financed, making it possible for at least eight of the apartments to be available at lower-cost rents. If more funds are raised, the number of low-cost apartments will increase. W hen finished, Landis Place on King will bring 79 apartments and ground-floor retail space to 239 W. King St., Lancaser. The opening is set for March of 2023 and already has renters for about 30% of the apartments, even without having a model to show. For more information on Landis Place on King, visit www.landisplace.org.
