Manheim Township

Inthe world of marching bands, there is a distinct difference between playing and performing. In some ways, members of the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) marching band perform for themselves - see self-esteem, selfconfidence, self-actualization. But what they do takes on even more meaning when it’s done in front of others.
Another Manheim Township marching band season is upon us. The 50th edition of the Marching Blue Streaks will be on revealed during Community Night on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Manheim Township High School, then again as part of the pregame festivities for the football team’s Friday, Aug. 25, season opener at home against Cumberland Valley.
“W hat these kids are doing matters on Friday nights,” said Scott Siegel, who’s in his 16th year of directing the Manheim Township
marching band. “The community’s support is appreciated. We like performing in front of large audiences. If people know this matters and that their support is important to these kids, that’s a win.”
The Manheim Township marching band will perform this season before all five Blue Streak regularseason home games and at halftime of all five away football games. MTHS will commemorate its 50 years of marching and music during a homecoming ceremony on Friday, Oct. 6.
The Manheim Township marching band will also participate in four showcases sponsored by the Pennsylvania Coalition of Bands at various locations on Saturdays during the fall.
“I’m biased, but these students are some of the brightest and most respectful kids in the high school building,” said Siegel. “They’re such a diverse group. They’re like a second family. For some, band is a social connection. Every year the
Science is all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.
The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.
Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in
the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great enjoyment from observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.
“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”

group has a different personality and a different group of leaders. These are kids who are here genuinely enjoying what we are doing.”
The 2023-24 edition of the Marching Blue Streaks is 95 members strong, comprising two drum majors, 70 musicians, 17 members
of the color guard and six equipment personnel. This season, the band will be performing a seven-minute show titled “Heroes and Villains,” which is built around recognizable music from popular movies.
“ We try to design a show custom for each group, one that provides a
unique experience,” said Siegel. “We think about what the kids would like to play, what audiences would like to hear and what we’d like to teach them for three months. Once we get a theme in mind, we ask ourselves, ‘What would that look like visually?’”

Chess is a sport of the mind. Chess is a battle of wills. Chess is great mental exercise.
The whole idea behind the Manheim Township Chess Club is to promote the game, teach it and bring like-minded players together.
The Manheim Township Chess Club meets from 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The chess club is a relatively recent development, but

presentations and lectures on astronomy, and the last half-hour is typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and the club also participates in outreach events across Lancaster County and beyond.
Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.
“The goal is to get people interested in astronomy and what’s going on in space,” said Lugar, a 76-year-old resident of Lititz. “It’s about people who like to do observing getting together.”
The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon. But while we as a species know more about supernovas, eclipses and black holes than we did back then, there is seemingly an infinite amount of information about space that is still left to discover.
“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said
Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources, but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”
As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen science-minded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public Library about a decade ago.
“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s reached a point where it’s become a place for everyone.”
The AELC sponsors a telescope loan program at the Lititz Public Library. The kit contains telescopes and accessories. For additional information on the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County, go to www.aelc.us.
Lancaster City Indie Retail Week began Aug. 18 and will continue through Saturday, Aug. 26. With a focus on celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit and unique offerings of local businesses, this annual event celebrates Lancaster city’s independent retail community and encourages residents and visitors to support local merchants.
retailers, carrying goods such as cooking spices and oils, tailored clothing, antiques, crafted goods and fine art. During Lancaster City Indie Retail Week, more than five dozen merchants are scheduled to participate, offering special deals and promotions.
one that seems to be gathering momentum.
“I like ... thinking through moves,” said William Lee, the founder of the Manheim Township Chess Club and a rising sophomore at Manheim Township High School. “Chess requires planning ahead and foresight. That type of thinking improves your mind. You also have to have a sense of what moves are good. Generally, the player who can see further ahead will win.”
There are currently about 20 members involved with the Manheim Township Chess Club, from beginners to intermediate in their skill levels. Meetings consist of short formal lessons or pointers, informal games and tips offered by more experienced members to those who are newer to the game.
The Manheim Township Chess Club is sponsored by the Manheim Township Education Foundation, whose $125 grant provided 10 chess sets to help the club get started. Lee said that the growth of the club has been limited by a lack of chess sets.
“For members who are complete beginners we have special sets to teach them how the pieces move,” said Lee. “Or we have another member sit down and teach them how to play. If we see a bad move, we talk them through it. Chess is not hard to learn, but it’s hard to get good at.”
“Actually, we’ve seen a pretty big increase in the popularity of chess,” continued Lee.
Lee’s father introduced him to the game of chess during his early elementary years. “I don’t play a lot of tournaments,” Lee said. “I mostly play online.” Lee is also a member of the Manheim Township High School chess team, which competes
in an interscholastic league.
“I kind of grew up at the library,” said Lee. “There are a ton of great players, and I wanted to do something at the library to give back. I thought I could do something with chess. ... It’s also good for recruiting for the (high school) chess team and the longevity of the chess team.”
When Lee isn’t starting chess clubs, you can find him playing the cello or the piano, working on a project with his school’s robotics team or participating in a math competition. He also enjoys reading.
“Chess is one of my favorite things to do,” said Lee. “I like things that have to do with thinking. It’s fun to have a community like the chess team and the chess club that enjoys doing the things I do.”

The North Museum of Nature and Science will be one of three screening locations for the Red Rose Film Festival on First Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. In addition to the North Museum, the screening locations for the four-year-old festival are Zoetropolis and Lancaster Southern Market. One of the festival’s goals is to promote Lancaster to global filmmakers as a fertile
place to create future works.
From more than 100 films submitted from all over the globe, the final selections will be made by a diverse panel of judges. Film submissions are due Friday, Sept. 1, and the screening schedule will be announced in mid-September. Additional information is available at www.redrose filmfestival.com.

Band camp officially opened on Aug. 7, but preparations for the season began well before then.
“I’m not sure most people realize how much goes into it and how much energy it takes to bring your A game all the time,” said Grace Romero, a senior member of the marching band. “When you’re in band, you’re in the moment. We’re here to entertain and
perform and have fun.”
Before 1973, MTHS sponsored a band program, but it was one that didn’t march.
“The band program has maintained its core values, and that revolves around helping kids not only become better musicians but become better people,” said Siegel. “It’s always been about what’s best for the student. The students are driving the bus.”

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.
The interior work included
re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.
Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) recently held its annual conference in Harrisburg. Several conservationists were recognized during an awards luncheon on July 19.
The Legislator Leadership Award was presented to Sen. Scott Martin, who was nominated by the Lancaster County Conservation District. This award recognizes legislators for outstanding efforts to further the activities and accomplishments of the state’s conservation districts or PACD on a statewide basis. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Martin is an advocate for conservation efforts across the state. He worked to enact the legislation that created the new statewide Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program, which represents a $154 million investment to help improve water quality and soil health. Martin was also instrumental in providing additional funding to
conservation districts for their operational needs through the state budget process.
Piper Sherburne was one of two recipients of the President’s Award. The PACD executive board president - currently Kelly Stagen - selects an individual, organization, or agency to receive this award in recognition of their outstanding efforts that have resulted in furthering the accomplishments of PACD. Sherburne is PACD’s South East Region director and chair of the Berks County Conservation District board. She was recognized for her efforts to eradicate the spotted lanternfly in Pennsylvania. Sherburne is known locally, statewide, and now nationally for her knowledge and input regarding this invasive pest.

The Aug. 26 program will open with a recent choral arrangement by Ben Bram of the jazz standard “Smile” and proceed with a collection of well-known jazz and classical pieces, mostly from the modern era. Of special interest, noted Emery, is the set by Church of the Brethren composer Shawn Kirchner, titled “Heavenly Home: Three American Songs.”
Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, has announced an International Fun Day as well as the 2023-24 Starlight Tea Concert Series.

The event will include displays representing various countries and regions, with each one providing an activity, craft, or food. The church will serve a free hot dog lunch throughout the day, and donations will be accepted.
Children may get their “passports” stamped at each booth they visit, and every child who completes a passport will receive a prize.
Countries and regions that will be featured include Australia, the Bahamas, Colombia, the Dominican Republic,
Eastern Europe, England, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Germany, Ireland, Nigeria, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, Venezuela, and West Africa. Additional countries still may be added.

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.
The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification. Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.
Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information

Adults will receive a door prize ticket when they arrive. Prizes will be drawn at 12:45 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Aug. 26, the Starlight Tea Concert Series will kick off with a concert by the 44-voice chamber chorus Musical Associates at 7 p.m. Since 2003, Musical Associates has performed choral programs ranging from medieval music to the present day. Founder and artistic director Emery DeWitt noted that not only does the chorus perform its usual classical repertoire, but it has also added some vocal jazz to its performances.
The auditioned chorus rehearses and performs only in the summer months, allowing area music professionals to enjoy challenging repertoire without the pressures of the fall and spring academic seasons. The group is accom-
panied by Mary Ellen DeWitt. Emery served as director of music at Lancaster COB from 2004 to 2021, during which
