FINAL CONCERT
The 2018 Summer Music Series at Long’s Park,
Natalie Miller, co-section leader and brass captain for trumpets in the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) marching band, thinks audiences are going to appreciate the variety offered in the band’s fall drill, titled “West Side Story: Through the Eyes of Maria.” “This will be one of those shows you can see over and over and still find something new each time,” she noted. The more than 120 members of the MTHS band were making quick progress on learning the drill when they met at the school for band camp during the weeks of Aug. 6 through 10 and 13 through 17. “We started learning the drill (on Aug. 9), and we have six pages done,” said Yasmin Nicholas, who shares drum major duties with Frances Hightower. The seven-minute show will feature a number of recognizable tunes from
“ West Side Story,” beginning with “Maria” and seguing into “Something’s Coming,” followed by “America” and a reprise of “Maria.” “One Hand, One Heart,” “The Rumble,” “Somewhere,” and “Tonight” will all be featured in the show. “West Side Story” was inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” with music by Leonard Bernstein. The two lead characters, Tony and Maria, are young and in love, but they are separated by prejudice and tragedy. Miller explained that band director Scott Siegel has wanted to do a show based on the music of “West Side Story” for years, but the rights to the music only recently became available. The presentation offers many opportunities for individual band members to have a moment in the spotlight. Ashleigh Gushiken will play a flugelhorn solo in the opening song and again See MTHS Marching Band pg 6

Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream
Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Paws In The Park Scheduled In Lititz By Ann Mead Ash
Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, founders of Leo’s Helping Paws, set a specific goal when they created the organization more than four years ago to support dog rescue groups by providing grants. “We knew in order to save dogs, you needed funding (because) vet bills are a major part of a rescue,” said Styer. “We knew we needed to fundraise, so we founded a team.” “We wanted to help all rescues,” Buchter added, noting that rescue organizations that are eligible for grants from Leo’s must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. “We started with (rescues located in) Pennsylvania, but we have added bordering states including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia.” In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a food and supply See Paws In The Park pg 3
Leo, the rescued corgi that is the namesake of Leo’s Helping Paws, is looking forward to attending Paws in the Park, a dog-centered fundraiser for the organization that will be held in Lititz Springs Park on Sept. 29. The event will feature games, food, and vendors that create items or provide services for dogs.
