A Chance To Take Part Landis Homes Plans Public, Family Events For Fellowship Day
Landis Homes’ Caring Fund was founded to provide benevolent care for residents who have exhausted their finances, and the annual Landis Homes Fellowship Day event raises money to support that fund. Until last year, the event brought together residents of Landis Homes with family and members of the outside community at the Landis Homes campus at 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. “Last year things had to change for Fellowship Day,” said Beth Trout, vice president of advancement and communications with Landis Communities. To protect residents from COVID-19 during the 2020 event, the benefit auction moved to an online platform, the chicken barbecue became a drivethrough, and activities for residents, including an ice cream social,

Boettcher House To Conclude Concert Season t the end of July, organizers of the Boettcher House concert series were happy to kick off a full season of concerts, once again providing music under the trees on summer evenings. Liminal Space, a new band that formed during the quarantine, on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m., and the Bell Bottoms, a band that specializes in the music of bygone eras, on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets. The Liminal Space is a project bringing together pianist Andy
Roberts and soprano Sarah Zahn. According to Zahn, the goal was to find a space that is stylistically “between genres.” With each musician wanting to remain true to his or her own unique musical style, the pair found a way to rest between both in the liminal space. The duo’s music reimagines classic pop and rock music for soprano,
classical strings, and jazz piano. Cellist Laurie Reese and violinist Naomi Main add depth to a musical repertoire that is meant to sound both familiar and completely new. Roberts and Zahn created the sound by exploring the idea during the time when COVID-19 restrictions left many feeling suspended in time.

More than 30 years ago, Art Reist of Manheim Township went to auctioneer school in Mason City, Iowa. As one of his exams, he was asked to identify 100 items in a pole barn full of antiques. The professor boasted that no one had ever received a perfect grade on the test. “I named every one,” recalled Reist, who noted that the teacher pointed out that there was one item even he could not identify. “It was a tool that was used to seam stovepipe together,” said Reist. Reist will share his knowledge when he presents “Antique Farm Tools and Artifacts,” a program sponsored by the Manheim Township Historical Society, which will be held at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. Reist said he plans to bring about 50 items, including tools relating to tobacco, Conestoga wagons, and farming antiques, to the venue. Guests are invited to bring old artifacts and tools to the presentation for Reist to identify. Reist, who has nearly 40 years of auctioneering experience, noted that if he cannot identify an item, he will say so.

In addition to his auctioneer training and experience, Reist comes by much of his knowledge through his father, also named Art, who taught history at Conestoga Valley High School for decades. “Dad cleaned the chicken house out, and he started collecting tools to take into the classroom,” recalled Reist, who noted that as farms around the area were sold, his father attended sales and filled the chicken house with items such as anvils that were made in the 1600s and devices used to make tools that were instrumental in making Conestoga wagons. Reist still lives on the farm his great-grandfather Linnaeus purchased in 1875 when he was 19 years old. Linnaeus married Susan Herr Landis and began farming 30 acres of commercial tobacco, building a barn from oak trees located on the property. Among the many items Reist has in his collection is a denglestock, which is a type of anvil used to sharpen scythes, along with a tool that resembles a large pizza cutter that was used to measure the circumference of a wagon wheel to fit the cast iron on. Reist plans to bring a number of items related to tobacco farming and processing. He has a

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the
Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at

At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE opened The Resting Place, a women’s dropin center meeting basic needs and providing safe housing for those who request it, in Reading in 2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it
leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Bird-inHand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.

Every year, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, serves more than 4,000 children. The Schreiber Center provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy services, such as occupational, physical, and speech-language therapy, for children from birth to the age of 21. In addition, the Schreiber Center offers early education preschool and child care services, recreational programs, behavioral health services, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. “The people at Schreiber are amazing,” said Lititz resident Michael Mengel. When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel, was 2 years old, she received speech-language therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten. “Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Schreiber Center will host its 33rd annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival. This rain-or-shine event will take place
from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. There will be food, pony rides, face painting, and more. Attendees will see a race between nearly 25,000 ducks as they float down the Conestoga River. When people register for a racing duckie, they can receive a themed souvenir duckie. North Star Initiative will hold its inaugural Truth About Sex Trafficking event on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Earlier in the summer, as part of a stay-at-home service project, junior and senior high school youths from the congregation participated in afternoon activities at Elizabeth Martin Elementary School with children and youths enrolled in this program.
Organ Concert Series To Return First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will bring back its “Organic Reflections” concert series beginning on First Friday, Sept. 3. After finding out that Creation Festival was canceled for the second year in a row, Josh Fulmer, youth minister at Hempfield Church of the Brethren, 1186 Stevens St., Manheim, was disappointed. The youth group members had also been looking forward to attending the music festival, so Fulmer discussed ideas with the church secretary, who suggested hosting a music event at the church. Fulmer noted that he did not want to plan something small with only a few bands. Instead, he wanted to aim high and shoot for the stars. Hempfield Church of the Brethren will host its first Hempfield Community Outdoor Bash event from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The event is free to the public and will take place on the church grounds. The purpose of the event is to provide a fun and entertaining environment for the community to interact with the church, enjoy food and fellowship, and be introduced to the Gospel through music, messages, and personal connections. Speakers, singers, and bands are scheduled to take the stage. Among them will be The New Haven, Ryan Mayersky, and Matt Wheeler. There will also be food for purchase. “I want to make sure our community is OK and make sure they know that we care about them,” said Fulmer. “What better way to do that
