“I was sitting at a table across from a group of people and I said, ‘I always wanted to have a chocolate festival,’” said Freeman, the founder and chair of the Chocolate Walk committee. “We were talking about some things that we can do that are different. Someone said, ‘That idea has legs.’ Someone made the comment that these events where people go in and out of businesses are nice.
“We have a lot of fun, and we raise a lot of money,” Freeman continued. “It really benefits all around; that’s why it’s successful. Everyone sees the benefit of it.”
Fundraiser Reinvents Chocolate in Creative Ways Garden
In this year of anniversaries, Freeman’s Chocolate Walk idea is turning 25. This year’s edition of the family-oriented fundraiser will be staged from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

“We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lancaster County,” said Cross. “We don’t accept just anybody. The pay-it-forward program is mandatory when we come on board.
Everybody told me how much money I was going to make in real estate. But Brittany (Garner, owner) told me about how much money I was going to give away. We all do it together. It’s important to all of us.
Changes Realty Group will host a celebratory community outreach/fundraising event called Million Reasons Festival. The fair will recognize the $1 million that Life Changes Realty Group has donated to charities impacting Lancaster County.
The free event will include food trucks, an artisans’ market, a cornhole tournament, other games, a dunk tank, face painting and bounce houses, and the kids’ area at Penn Medicine Park will be open for play.
Foundation Receives Funding to Expand Program
Touchstone Foundation has been awarded $255,766 through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program to support the expansion and strengthening of its Rise Above program.

“I’ve got bills too,” added Cross. “I’m not a flashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s very satisfying.”

“Buying a house is the biggest financial decision that most people make,” said Cross. “When I meet people and give them my spiel, I talk about the payit-forward program. It demonstrates the service over the sale. As a sales tactic, it works out great. Clients will say, ‘Oh, I really like that.’”
Through the pay-it-forward program, it’s taken Life Changes Realty Group 13 years to reach the $1 million donation milestone. Cross’ contribution to that sum is more than $4,000 of take-home pay.
“It’s incredible how we’ve been able to do it, especially as piecemeal,” said Cross. “There’s a snowball effect with that. It just adds up in pieces. It’s like drips in a bucket, and now the bucket is overflowing.”
Launched in 2022, Rise Above was created to help eliminate stigma surrounding youth mental wellness while empowering young people with tools for resilience, self-awareness, and advocacy. The program brings mental wellness programming and youth mentorship to Lancaster County schools for students in grades seven through 12 as well as to young adults ages 18 to 26 in community groups.
expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools through school-day workshops, after-school programming, summer intensives, and community-based groups for young adults. Additional support for Rise Above was also received in 2025 from the City Limits Foundation, helping strengthen the program’s long-term impact and reach.
With the new VIP grant funding, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools, serving students in grades seven through 12 during the school day and through after-school programming. The expansion also includes new opportunities for young adults through community-based groups, extending support beyond high school.
At the request of their clients, Life Changes Realty Group has donated funds to more than 70 causes and nonprofits, including SWAN 4 Kids, animal shelters, St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s Off the Streets program, Gamers Outreach, the Alzheimer’s Association, Building Bridges Foundation, North Star Initiative, Lancaster Conservancy, Power Packs Project and education foundations.
“It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard of most of them.”

One of its goals is to reduce long-term risk factors associated with trauma and mental health challenges. The consistent presence of a caring, supportive adult is a protective factor for many childhood adversities. Supportive adult mentors can protect and buffer children from toxic stress, help children heal and build resiliency, and inspire young people to build strong relationships.

This initiative will equip mental health professionals, artists, and community members - as well as Rise Above graduates - with the tools to serve as mentors. Training includes Youth Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed care, and child abuse prevention and reporting.
The program expansion has also received recognition and support from Pennsylvania leaders and community partners who continue to advocate for youth mental wellness, violence prevention, and mentorship initiatives across the commonwealth.

There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms.
“I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.”
Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie.
“They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have.
“We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.”
The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee
and appetizers in addition to tea.
Nine subcommittees support the structure and work of the club.
“Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil.
“We try to get everyone involved. It’s not just an observation program.
“Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. We’d like to get other people interested.”
The club meets monthly at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.
“When I became a retiree, I was able to spend more time gardening and developing more perennials,” said Heil. “As we get older, we have to evaluate what we can do and we can’t do.”
The garden club was established in 1947. Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated for and explored the beauty of gardening.
“In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club in Lancaster County,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning, new members had to be approved. Board members would come out to see if the new members’ gardens were worthy of the club.”

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host the Lancaster British Brass Band in concert on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.

R&B Group to Perform at Celebrate Lancaster
The City of Lancaster has announced that Grammy Award-winning R&B group 112 will headline Celebrate Lancaster on Friday, Aug. 14, in downtown Lancaster. The annual community festival draws thousands of residents and visitors to the first and 100 blocks of North Queen Street. It will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.
Known for hits including “Peaches & Cream,” “Dance With Me,” and “Only You,” 112 rose to fame in the late 1990s and became one of R&B’s most successful groups of the era. At UZRC, AI Is Power Used for Good

Not unlike the unknown, technology can be a little scary. The traditional application of technology has always been to make the world a better place for humans.
Recently, United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) installed and implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) system that makes life safer for its residents. Miranda Troyer has been UZRC’s director of personal care for six years.
“It’s a radar-based
system that requires no microphones and no cameras,” said Troyer. “It works on motion detection. It’s smart, so it learns our residents. It learns where their resting places are, so it’s known when they are moving. I’m not a tech person. But our results have been amazing.”
In January, UZRC, which is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, became one of the first AI-powered senior living communities on the East Coast when it was equipped with a Helpany AI system. The AI system
is an early detection tool designed to reduce the frequency and severity of residents’ falls.
“It can sense a decrease in activity,” said Troyer. “It tracks mobility and how well our residents are walking. It can also monitor their sleep. It sends me alerts every morning. It will notify us if someone is getting around at night, which is when most falls occur.”
Since the Helpany AI system was installed, UZRC has seen a decrease in residents’ falls to literally nothing. In 2025, UZRC had recorded 76 resident falls. In April of this year, there were no UZRC resident falls recorded, the first time that has happened in the retirement community’s 121-year existence.

“On a weekly basis, residents get health reports from this system,” Troyer continued. “It’ll guide them, and they can see where they’re at. They can choose to sort of turn things around. The residents have really responded well, and the system also has a portal where family members can see how their loved ones are doing through an app.”
UZRC was founded in 1905 as United Zion Home for the Homeless.
“I do credit the system for that,” said Troyer. “It almost resembles a smoke alarm in a room. It connects to our Wi-Fi, and it has 24-hour support. We just all really love the simplicity. It’s very easy to understand, and it’s even easier for the caregivers. They can monitor residents through apps on their cell phones.”
Currently, 27 residents, most of whom are Lancaster County natives, call UZRC home.
“Some of the biggest factors in falls are a decrease in or interrupted sleep, a decrease in activity and weaker mobility,” Troyer said. “Those are three of the biggest things that the system monitors. In the past, we’ve been more reactive when people fell. It depends

We’re always looking to grow and change. As time is changing, so is the tech and the things you can do.”
“This has been one of the most innovative areas we’ve ventured into,” concluded Troyer. “We’re being innovative and using these technologies to better the lives of the people we serve. I’m really focused on resident care. It’s about overall health and well-being, and they can be very fragile.”

“We have a lot of people excited for the event,” said Freeman. “People go to stop number one, sample what’s being served there and then they’re off to store number two. There’s a bit of a treasure-hunt vibe to it. They have to find it and see what they’re serving.”
Some 30 downtown Lititz stores and stops make up the destinations along the Chocolate Walk. At each stop, walkers are treated to sweet or savory samples of unique Wilbur Chocolate delicacies invented and prepared by chefs, chocolatiers and candy makers - everything from ice cream, baked items and confections to pumpkin soup with chocolate ganache.
“It’s all kinds of stuff,” said Freeman. “If you tried eating a third of it, it would be way too much. Some of the treats are packaged so they can be taken with you. Every year, Wilbur creates something special for the Chocolate Walk.”
Organizers of the Chocolate Walk are seeking to make $100,000 from the event. The proceeds
will be donated to Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the Lititz Public Library, the Manheim Township Public Library and other nonprofits that support children causes.
“Everybody has fun on Chocolate Walk day,” said Freeman. “It’s a fun, fun day and we raise a lot of money. If you ever walk about Lititz on Chocolate Walk day, you’ll see a lot of smiling faces.”
Even the greatest of Chocolate Walks began with a single step - in 2002, that was 13 downtown stores and $4,000 raised for children-oriented charities. Since its inception, the Lititz Chocolate Walk has donated $1.2 million to kids’ causes.
“There are a lot of people putting a lot of effort into it,” said Freeman. “It’s definitely a tradition in Lititz. Lititz is a very vibrant town on a weekend night. Lititz is known as a foodie town, and I think the Chocolate Walk has played some part (in) that.”

Access to Community Resources Expanded
Residents seeking help with housing, food, financial assistance, child care, health care, employment, and other essential needs may now connect directly with trained resource navigators at the Lancaster Public Library through a new partnership between PA 211 East and the Lancaster Public Library, located at 151 N. Queen St.
The initiative brings PA 211 East’s resource navigation services into the library three days each week, with the goal of creating a convenient, welcoming space where neighbors can receive personalized support and connections to local services in person.
Using PA 211 East’s extensive database of health and human services, resource navigators will help individuals and families identify programs and supports that may meet their needs. Staff members are also trained in homelessness diversion practices and can assist individuals experiencing housing instability with coordinated entry services.
The partnership recognizes the role libraries play as community hubs while expanding the range of support available to visitors. While library staff members provide expert assistance with information and educational resources, PA 211 East navigators offer specialized knowledge of health and human service programs throughout Lancaster County and beyond.
During the program’s first week, resource navigators served 15 neighbors and provided 35 referrals to community resources. Requests ranged from tax preparation assistance and volunteer opportunities to housing support and general information about local services.
PA 211 East services are available at the Lancaster Public Library on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during regular library hours. Community members may also receive information about resources by dialing 211, texting their ZIP code to 898-211, or visiting www.east.pa211.org.

Ice Cream Social
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its annual ice cream social. This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Tom Reinhold, journalist and novelist Larry Alexander, state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream. A highlight of the event will be nature crafts and games under the tent in the meadow. Prizes will be awarded for the first 50 children who complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt. Children can make their own wooden necklaces and explore the nature trail along the Cocalico Creek. Attendees can learn more about the Historic Landscape Restoration Initiative that will transform the property into a natural habitat for local wildlife, flowers, and plants.
Guides in historical costumes will be stationed in the buildings to greet visitors and interpret the history of the 18th-century structures. The acoustic duo the Groove Slingers will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. in the new amphitheater. The duo plays a variety of

Visitors will also be able to play Colonial games and try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.
Event attendees may also learn more about charity in Ephrata and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.
The museum store will feature 18th-century reproduction toys, crafts, and souvenirs; books of historical interest; and local handmade arts and crafts. Visitors may also purchase cards, candles, pottery, sleigh bells, and chocolate in the store.
Tickets for the event will be available for purchase in the Visitor Center on the day of the event. There is a discount for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates and youths ages 6 to 10, and children 5 and younger will be admitted free of charge.
