Driving Forward HVMI Slates Golf Outing

Kyle Robinson, executive director of Handi*Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), has a lot on his plate.

Not too long ago, the ministry purchased the land at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, and work to receive approvals to locate camps, retreat centers, and day programs there is underway, with HVMI planning a capital fund campaign to begin in the fall.

With all that looming, Robinson is well aware of the importance of maintaining the general budget. “Our golf outing is driving programs that are happening now,” explained Robinson.

“Our general fund should be strong as we go into our capital campaign. We need to appropriately handle all the things God has given us.”

HVMI will hold its 17th annual golf outing at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Contests will include a hole-in-one competition, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, straightest drive, and a putting competition. Registration and light fare will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow the round.

HVMI offers recreational camps and more to people with disabilities and also includes Minds Renewed, BASIS, and REST Ministries. Plans for the land include a camp featuring a chapel/ dining hall, a cabin, a pavilion, and more. Recreational features that HVMI hopes to add will include a pool, a playground, a basketball court, and playing fields with ADA-compliant paved walking paths. On July 1, more than 40 people waited at Groffdale Mennonite Church in Leola for a bus to arrive from New York City. The group consisted of host family members who were eager to meet the 26 Fresh Air children who were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m.

The Sellers family of Denver, Caitlin and Keith and their three children ages 8, 5, and 3, were looking forward to sharing their home in the woods with their assigned child.

“We thought it would be a good opportunity to open our world to a child with limited experience,” said Keith, who noted that camping in the backyard was on the family’s agenda. “We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,” added See Fresh Air Fund pg 4

The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home.

They’re just in awe,” Mable shared.

Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223-225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building, formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and longterm operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed.

The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet.

This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to

state-of-the-art.

Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.”

When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.”

A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill.

Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street.

Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live.

The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are

The Lancaster British Brass Band will perform at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster (Neffsville), on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. The event will be the final concert in the 2018-19 Musical Arts Concert Series. The band will perform a variety of works, including classics, marches, hymns, and popular pieces.

The 2019 summer internship graduation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 5 p.m. at LancasterHistory. Seven college interns will present on the projects they have completed over the course of the summer under the supervision of LancasterHistory’s staff in five museum departments. “Creating Habitats for Butterflies,” part of the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at LancasterHistory. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum, the program will feature York County Master Gardener Deb Carman explaining how individuals can create habitats for butterflies in all their life stages, how native plants impact butterflies, and how to employ butterfly-friendly gardening techniques. UZRC Sets Cottage Open House United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will host a cottage open house on Friday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. The open house will feature a 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom, oneand-a-half bath cottage that is currently available. All of United Zion’s cottages feature one-floor living with a daylight walkout basement. Cottages also have decks with hilltop views of Lititz countryside. A housekeeping staff member stops by monthly to clean, and other staff members are available to perform home maintenance.

UZRC offers wellness, social and educational activities on campus to keep residents busy and entertained. Each cottage is within an easy walk of the main building with its community room, wellness center, chapel, dining options and more. At the event, Landis Homes will display a wide variety of artwork that will be auctioned off at the Fellowship Day and Benefit Auction on Saturday, Sept. 14.

works of pottery, wood and glass will also be on display in the Harvest View Foyer, and an online gallery is available at www.landishomes.org.

The artwork portion of the auction on Sept. 14 will begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. with Abe Diffenbach as the auctioneer. Some art pieces will be featured in the silent auction from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a cash-and-carry gallery where art pieces and frames may be purchased throughout the day. All proceeds will support the benevolent ministry of Landis Homes.

North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid because he’s different or sick,” Stoesz said.

“You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of these kids were,” continued Stoesz. “These three children were a voice, but they didn’t do it alone.” The end of the exhibit challenges visitors to consider how they can make a difference.

The exhibit is made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

“The Power of Children: Making a Difference” was organized by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

The exhibit opened on June 16 and will remain on display at the North Museum through Sunday, Aug. 11. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, readers may visit www.northmuseum.org.

Renaissance Faire Season To Open The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will open its 13-week season on Saturday, Aug. 3, amid the formal gardens of Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The Faire will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, through Oct. 27, as well as Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The festivities will feature open-air stages and village streets filled with music, dance, and action-packed performances, including archery demonstrations and improvised songs and swordplay. Manpowered rides, a Gaming Village, a Fight Circle, a Dungeon Museum and an Amazing Maze all are part of the Faire, as well.

This year, Queen Elizabeth I will return to the Faire after a five-year absence. Her

coronation will take place on the Globe Stage.

Scores of merchants will offer demonstrations, such as glass blowing and blacksmithing, and items for purchase, including jewelry, Renaissance costuming, specialty teas, home and garden décor, and leatherwork. More than 20 restaurants dot the Shire, offering a variety of foods and hand-crafted beverages.

Additionally, beer, wine, and other beverages are available at pour houses throughout the Shire.

Visitors may end their day by attending the Ultimate Joust, a blend of equestrian skill, hand-to-hand combat and pyrotechnics.

Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime.

“We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster

County,” said Tanya.

The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up.

“We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya.

The Fresh Air Fund is a not-for-profit agency that connects thousands of children from low-income families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations.

Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and provide educational resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide.

Finally, visitors will learn about Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII.

designed to encourage children and families to explore problems of isolation, fear, and prejudice by giving a face to the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic.

Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps.

Anne’s bestselling diary is a testament to the power of words.

Italian artist Guglielmo Botter will exhibit his sketches of Lancaster city’s historic buildings in August and September at the Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. The Lancaster Office of Promotion will host an opening reception with Botter on First Friday, Aug, 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Visitor Center. Light refreshments will be served. A trained architect, Botter was born in Italy and now splits his time between that country and the United States. After drawing his hometown, Traviso, Italy, for decades, Botter traveled and sketched cities like Pittsburgh and Richmond.

Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins.”

“The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and

Dick Van Dyke,” said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people.”

According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there,” said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” among the many musical numbers. Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers.

Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show.

Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013.

Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications.

To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.� Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs.

The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications.

Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country.

In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety

program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed

by EVERFI, the course uses an evidencebased public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs.

As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost.

Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription.

Virtuoso Pianist To Perform Xinyue “Sissi” Zhang, a virtuoso pianist, will return to St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Landisville, to present a free concert featuring music by Chopin, Brahms, Bach, and others on Friday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Although the event is free, an offering will be accepted.

Zhang will play Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat Minor; Chopin’s Etude Op. 1, No. 1 in C Major; Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in D Major; Chopin’s Ballade No. 1; and works by Brahms and Rachmaninoff.

Zhang first performed at St. Edward’s in 2015 when she was a student at Lancaster Mennonite School. She is now a junior at United World College in Changshu, China, but continues to take lessons from Lititz resident Xun Pan, head of the Lancaster International Piano Festival and faculty member at Millersville University, through video apps.

Born in 2002, Zhang gave her premiere solo piano concert at the age of 10. She was the youngest pianist to perform professionally in her native city, Suzhou, China. Since then, she has performed various concerts in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Turkey, and the United States.

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual Bookworm Frolic. The annual sale of used books will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The sale will feature approximately 40,000 books in 22 categories, including fiction, children’s literature, travel, music, and history.

Separate fees have been set for hardback books and for paperback books.

Everything will be half-price on Aug. 17.

On Aug. 16 and 17, there will be a box deal, with separate fees per box on Friday and on Saturday. The sale will also include records, CDs, and DVDs, which

“We are moving forward with the review process,” said Robinson. “It would be great to break ground this year,” he noted, adding that the process will begin with moving earth around. “A lot of things need to happen on the land,” he said. “Once we have the approval, things can move fast.”

The capital campaign that will be necessary to fund the new location is forthcoming as well. “We want to know the exact costs (before launching the campaign),” explained Robinson. “Hopefully by the end of summer, (we will launch).”

“Our goals are to centralize (camping) at the Akron property,” said Robinson, who added that workshops to help local individuals and churches learn the best ways to welcome people with disabilities into their organizations are also planned for the location. Robinson would also like to see the location offer retreat opportunities to bereaved parents who take part in BASIS and parents of children with disabilities, who could receive respite services.

According to Robinson, the work required to obtain land development approval for the site is well underway.
