Police officers have feelings and emotions; they’re vulnerable. Police officers face challenges and hardships. Police officers have families, and they entertain dreams, goals and aspirations.
“Trust makes everything easier,” said Mark Shivers, who’s been a police officer in Manheim Township for 16 years. “When people know their officers, they’re more comfortable asking for help, reporting problems and working to solve issues. Strong communities and good policing go hand in hand.”
“Our main job is keeping people safe,” continued Shivers, “but I think we’re much more than that. We work with schools, businesses, churches, senior communities and neighborhood groups all year long. We try to be involved before people need to call 911.”

To truly discover Lancaster is to uncover its history. To truly discover who we are, we must understand our origins.
A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
“We want to expand people’s horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”
This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.”
“We used ‘neighborhood’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. We all know

DMVA Available to Assist With Locating Forms
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is available to provide assistance to veterans who have lost their DD Form 214 (DD-214), DD Form 215 (DD-215) or other military documents. DMVA may be able to help veterans locate these documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits they have earned.
The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through his or her military service. The DD-215
is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214.
The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid confusion in searching for them is to make sure they are safely filed immediately upon leaving the military.

Youths Qualify for National Esports Competition
Twelve youth esports athletes from central Pennsylvania traveled to Orlando, Fla., from June 25 to 28 to compete in the Esports Series Championship Nationals at Full Sail University. The event brought together players from across the United States for live competition in Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Minecraft, Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Marvel Rivals, and other titles.
The 12 central Pennsylvania players represented Valhallan Esports Training locations in Camp Hill and Lancaster, and they come from communities across the region, including Lancaster, Camp Hill, Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, and Chambersburg. The students qualified through competitive league play and competed in Fortnite and Apex Legends. The players qualified as members of six teams. In the Fortnite competition, the players and their teams are as follows: Jack Butler and Jordan Flores, the Chefs; Eli Schwalm and Lachlan Shamenek, GUFF; Brady Mace and Shawn
Cook, Famous People; and Ethan Hernandez and Roland Benion, Newbies.
In the Apex Legends competition, players Collin Lehman, Alex Markan, and Will Markan competed as members of the Ravens, while Ethan Hernandez, Brady Mace, and Bo Ritter served as members of Stormborn.

for more than two years, while others are newer competitors who rapidly advanced through the program’s coaching and competitive development system. Organizers say the esports program focuses on skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship. It also offers opportunities to earn scholarships.
Valhallan Esports Training provides structured youth esports programs focused on coaching, competitive leagues, STEM learning, camps, and personal development. Through team-based competition and mentorship, students work to develop gaming skills alongside communication, leadership, confidence, and teamwork.
Sites Needed for Air Quality Sensors
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitoring Initiative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.
PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and

Areas in Lancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg, Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierraclubevent@gmail.com and ask for an application, which covers the requirements for becoming a monitor host. Other areas of the county with existing or proposed future sources of air pollution will also be considered.
When positioning of the additional PurpleAir sensors is complete, the
Lancaster Group will have installed about 18 of them at various locations in the county. Assessing Lancaster County’s air quality became a goal of the Lancaster Group as a result of the American Lung Association’s annual surveys, which consistently give the county low marks for short-term particle pollution. The aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.

Bicycle Club Plans Rides
The Lancaster Bicycle Club will hold two rides through scenic roads in August. The club will host its annual Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the Covered Bridge Classic on Sunday, Aug. 16.
The Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride - voted Best Ride in the State of Pennsylvaniawill offer two scenic route options designed for riders who enjoy quiet backroads, rolling farmland, and local ice cream favorites. Riders participating in a 40-mile route will depart from Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m., with stops at Bird-in-Hand Bakery, Lapp Valley Farm, and Oregon Dairy. Those taking part in a 28-mile route will depart from the church at 8:30 a.m., visiting Birdin-Hand Bakery, Hayloft Ice Cream, and Oregon Dairy. “We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.
“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. Zalit Begins Term as Rotary District Governor
The Rotary Clubs of South Central Pennsylvania have welcomed Rebecca Zalit from the Rotary Club of Palmyra as the 2026-27 district governor of Rotary District 7390.
The leadership transition took place during the district’s annual installation ceremony, where Zalit officially succeeded Mary Brunski of Carlisle as district governor for the new Rotary year, which began July 1. This year’s celebration was held at Palmyra Bowling and the Sinkhole Saloon & Grille. Aaron Jacobs of York and Elizabeth Wolfe of York were also installed in their roles as incoming district governors for the years 2027-28 and 2028-29.
As district governor, Zalit will serve nearly
1,700 Rotary Club members in 39 clubs across Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. Throughout the coming year, she will work alongside club leaders to strengthen membership, develop community partnerships, support youth leadership programs, advance the Rotary Foundation, and expand service projects both locally and around the world.

Storytelling Night Planned
Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Felixa Valladares de Kunkle and Conrad Kanagy will relate short-form anecdotes drawn from their lives and experiences.
Kunkle began serving with LMC: A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches in March 2019 and currently serves as office coordina -
tor, prayer facilitator, and Hispanic ministry support. Originally from Honduras, she is fluent in Spanish, English, and German and uses her language skills to help build connections and foster communication across cultures within the LMC community. She is passionate about encouraging prayer, supporting leaders, and helping people feel welcomed, valued, and included.

“I think we have a very positive relationship with our community,” said Shivers. “People are supportive of the department, and we work hard to be visible and involved throughout the year, not just when we’re responding to calls. Whether you’ve lived here for 30 years or just moved in, it’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, meet your police officers and enjoy a fun evening together. We want everyone to feel comfortable coming up and talking with us.”
On National Night Out, members of the Manheim Township Police Department will be joined by community leaders and members of other civically minded organizations. There will be music, food, drinks, fire trucks, yard games, activities for kids, special demonstrations - and even a few surprises - at the family oriented, block party type event.

“It’s a chance to show that we’re regular people too and that we’re here to help, not just when something goes wrong,” said Shivers. “My favorite part is talking with people when nobody is having a bad day. Most of the time when someone sees a police officer, it’s because something happened. National Night Out lets us have conversations that don’t involve an emergency.”
Part of a national initiative to improve community and law enforcement relationships and to foster trust, National Night Out has been celebrated in Manheim Township for decades. Over those years, the event has grown in numbers and scope and evolved into one of the Manheim Township Police Department’s most important events.
The local police department also hosts scam prevention presentations at retirement communities, visits schools, conducts an annual 9/11 memorial service, checks child safety seats, collects and retires tattered American flags, stages unique community events and partners with various local organizations.
“We try to stay involved in the community in as many ways as we can,” said Shivers.
Kanagy is a professor emeritus of sociology at Elizabethtown College. He directed studies of Mennonite Church USA and a study of Anabaptists in 10 countries, and he was a longtime pastor at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. He also serves as publisher and executive editor of Santos Books. Conrad and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 37 years. They have an adult son and attend Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church. The event is free of charge, and donations will be received for the speakers as well as Mennonite Life’s ongoing storytelling and conservation efforts. how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support.
“Our goal is to continue to get the word out so we can reach as many people as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.”
Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an all-volunteer organization designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central nervous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords.
For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence.
“Spinal cord injuries or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central nervous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, sensory and cognitive changes. Cognitive changes can include difficulty with memory, sequencing or planning. Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups.
“Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added. “Keep in mind that these symptoms are

This year, the Covered Bridge Classic is expecting approximately 1,500 cyclists, underscoring its reputation as one of Pennsylvania’s most recognized and well-attended cycling events.
Proceeds from the Covered Bridge Classic directly support the Lancaster Bicycle Club’s Community Grants Program, which funds projects that make Lancaster County safer and more

Among the community events that Neuro Neighborhood sponsors and conducts are regular Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group meetings, the next one of which will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at CrushPD Fitness, 3545 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; Adaptive Recreation Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; and periodic Neuro Caregiver Support Group meetings at Wellness Merge Physical Therapy, 903 Nissley Road, Lancaster. All of those activities are free to attend, and some require preregistration at www .neuroneighborhood.org.
“We want people to know neurological conditions can happen to anyone, and if you or a loved one is diagnosed, there are people who want to help you navigate the challenges that you may be facing and support you in living a fulfilling life,” said Myers, a graduate of Warwick High School, who has a background in physical therapy. “We do not want people to isolate themselves or fear doing things based on a
diagnosis. We encourage you to reach out to our specialized support, because, with (the) right support, you can thrive. In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.”
Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood serves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Currently situated in the initial phase of its planned growth process, Neuro Neighborhood’s future goals include adding physical therapy services, incorporating a multidisciplinary team, locating a physical office space, adding wellness programming and partnering with similar orga-
nizations in the community.
“As I continued to study to become a board-certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, I also began searching for more community resources for my patients,” said Myers. “Unfortunately, I had trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research and connected with other organizations around the country that were trying to incorporate a better continuum of care and support for adults with neurological conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

CAP Members Attend Training Programs
Members of the Lancaster Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently spent a week at the Pennsylvania Wing’s Cadet Training Schools, either continuing their cadet development through hands-on learning and leadership training or by serving on staff. The program concluded with a formal graduation ceremony on June 28.
This year’s Basic Encampment program included drill training, warrior knowledge, sports, relay races, physical training, obstacle courses, and aerospace activities. During this process, the cadets learned how to work in a team, built camaraderie, gained independence, and made memories.

Emmerling will demonstrate how to make a pond garden in a pot. She will discuss the various plants that can be grown successfully in a water-filled pot to create a water feature on a deck, porch, or patio.

Jereco Acosta of Lancaster served as the cadet training officer for the Leadership Development Course, and Cadet Maj. Aaron Keohane of Pequea served as Squadron 10 deputy commander.
Two Jesse Jones Composite Squadron senior members volunteered at the Pennsylvania Wing Training Schools. 2nd Lt. Theresa Diehl of Lititz and 2nd Lt. Lisa Catherman of Windsor spent the week helping in the dining facilities.
Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located at the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome.
