Lancaster Bible College is as relevant today as it’s ever been

Bookshave always played a critical role in college education. At one local college, the main focus is on perhaps the most studied book in the history of mankindthe Good Book.

“W hat makes us different is that we’re a Bible college,” said Lancaster Bible College, Capital Seminary & Graduate School (LBC) executive vice president Jael Chambers. “At most colleges, you can take a course in Christianity. But every class at Lancaster Bible College is coming from the Bible. We think about what the Bible teaches and insert it into every course.”

Not unlike the Bible, LBC, whose main campus is located at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, has stood the test of time.

This year, Lancaster Bible College is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its founding. Ninety years of positively influencing hundreds of

thousands of young spirits, nine decades of serving, of being a part of the Lancaster community.

Sure, there’s been plenty of change, but some things just never go out of style.

“Ninety years is a testament to God and how he uses people to share his Gospel across the world,” said Chambers. “It’s unbelievable to see the connections the college has made over the years. We’re rooted in the past and building for the future.”

Established as Lancaster Bible School in September of 1933 by Henry J. Heydt, the college welcomed an initial class consisting of 22 students. By the 1970s, Lancaster Bible College had expanded to include 400 students and a campus of 36 acres.

Today, Thomas Kiedis is LBC’s sixth president, the campus is 100 acres in size and the school is recognized as one of the top online Bible colleges in the country.

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, ASSETS will celebrate 30 years serving Lancaster with an event at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, called ASSETS at 30, may be purchased at https://assets-at -30.eventbrite.com.

Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in an effort to create stateside opportunities for entrepreneurs. “We are a CDFI (community development financial institution),” said Nofziger, who noted the organization plans to expand beyond Lancaster County. ASSETS can offer loans from $1,000 to $50,000. Three main lending products are available: a small business loan of up to $10,000; an impact loan of up to $30,000, and a special Reimagining Our Community loan of up to $10,000 for one year at 1%, accompanied by a 30% matching grant.

On the surface, National Night Out appears to be about the community coming together and celebrating everything that is Manheim Township. But on a different level, it’s a strengthening of a bond that already exists between citizens and the Manheim Township Police Department.

On Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., the Manheim Township Police Department will sponsor its 10th annual National Night Out at Manheim Township Community Park, 309 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. The evening’s festive atmosphere

will feature food, fun and gamesand especially community pride.

National Night Out is a countrywide initiative designed to foster

neighborhood relationships and police-community partnerships. “I think (the bond is) strong and I think (the police and community)

Students to present “Mean Girls”

Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, in partnership with the Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS), will present the regional premiere of “Mean Girls: High School Version.” Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Gardner Theatre at LCDS, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

Adapted from Tina Fey’s 2004 film, “Mean Girls” focuses on high school student Cady Heron. Cady may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. To rise to the top of the popularity pecking order, Cady must take on The Plastics, a trio of frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. When Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign, Cady learns the hard way that you cannot cross a queen bee without getting stung. “Mean Girls” was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

The show is directed by Michael Popovsky. The creative team also includes Meg Schmidt, Christine Healy, Steffan Bomberger, Greg Woodbridge, Casey Potvin, Cody Allyn Page, Clayton Dombach, Andy Green, Elaina Mayer, Christyn Rutter, and Hong Tran-Speros.

The cast consists entirely of students age 18 and under from Lancaster County and the surrounding area. Carly Evans stars as Cady Heron, and the other cast members are Abby Leiboff, Alexandria Fernandez, Ava Rooney, Carly Geiter, Charlotte Caples, Dakota Schertzer, David Ferre, Delaney Woodbridge, Dhara Sundaram, Eden Marcott, Emma Antonacci, Jeremy Andro, Maddie Stern, Maeve Sasse, Maeve Larrimore, Mallory McVey, Molly Ciecka, Oli Bodine, Sarah Zeigler, Sophia Do, Susannah Schelling, T itus Newswanger, and Zoey Groff.

This performance is rated PG-13 for sexual content and language. However, “Mean Girls” is intended to provide an opportunity for meaningful dialogue about friendships, social media, bullying, and other topics that adolescents face daily.

depend on each other,” said Manheim Township Officer Natalie Littlehale, who’s coordinating National Night Out. “We really came together during COVID. But I feel like the community has our back. I think the bond has always been strong. Even during the darkest days for other police forces, Manheim Township never let us down.”

“It never faltered,” continued Littlehale. “We can’t do our job without the community. We have people who want to serve.”

Littlehale will be one of seven Manheim Township police officers present, along with four civilian township employees, at National Night Out. Also there that night will be representatives from community service agencies like local fire departments and rescue

“I think the best thing about Lancaster Bible College is that over those 90 years, it has stayed true to the mission,” said Chambers. “The mission has stayed the same, even though we deliver it differently. We want to help you on your Christian journey.”

LBC now operates satellite campuses in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. It offers more than 80 different certificates, bachelor’s, associate, master’s and doctoral degrees, and this year’s total enrollment across all of its campuses is expected to exceed 2,350 students.

LBC boasts a student-to-instructor ratio of 15-to-1, and studentathletes from the school compete in 20 intercollegiate sports. The aver-

departments, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and groups promoting bicycle safety and fire safety.

In addition, the evening will include music, yard games, drinks, hot dogs, ice cream and a special K9 presentation.

“There’s something for everyone, and there are so many things going on,” said Littlehale. “It’s going to be a fun, festive, see-your-neighbor, talk-to-people kind of event. The main purpose is to get everyone together and celebrate the amazing community we live in.”

In 2022, more than 500 residents turned up for Manheim Township National Night Out.

“Last year was the largest event ever,” said Littlehale. “I think this year is going to be even bigger. I want everyone to know that this is

age age of Lancaster Bible College students is 33.6 years, and this year’s incoming Class of 2027 features residents from 22 states and four foreign countries.

Lancaster Bible College, Capital Seminary & Graduate School employs 58 full-time faculty members, 272 adjunct faculty members and 147 full-time staff members.

“There’s a difference when you go to a Bible college,” said Chambers. “Sometimes with all the noise, the message can get blurry. We want to be ready for what God has in store for us. We want to show people what God is doing here. We want to reimagine how we share the Gospel.”

Littlehale was the driving force behind the Manheim Township Police Department establishing a local night out. And because of her impending retirement, this year’s will be the last one she attends as a police officer.

“The first few years we had it at Overlook Park, and it was a slow go,” said Littlehale, who’s spent her entire 27-year law enforcement career with the Manheim Township Police Department.

Coordinating Manheim Township National Night Out will be one of Natalie Littlehale’s final official duties as a police officer before she retires.

Veterans Honor Park is small memorial that packs big tribute

With a healthy dose of empathy, we can turn indebtedness into appreciation.

Located at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, across the parking lot from the entrance to the Lititz Public Library, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County recognizes all the servicemen and women from Lancaster County whose dedication and commitment helped provide all the freedom-related privileges we enjoy every day.

“It’s a way to honor those who served,” said Barbara Kreider, assistant secretary for Warwick Township, which maintains the park. “You’re teaching people about their freedoms. These are people who answered the call. Everything you do is based on the price these peo-

ple paid under less-than-ideal circumstances.”

Architecturally unique, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County is a somber place, an unassuming space.

An Abraham Lincoln quote - “Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause” - greets visitors to a park that recognizes contributions made by local personnel from every branch of the United States military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard - past, present and future.

“We’d like more people to know about it,” said Warwick Township manager Brian Harris. “We do our best to promote it, and anybody who visits the library can see it. But I’m sure there are those who don’t know this area exists.”

“It’s just a simple place where

you can go and reflect,” said Kreider. “At times, we’ll have families of people who have served come to us and say, ‘Hey, can you fly this flag?’ It means a lot to them.”

Perhaps the highlight of Veterans Honor Park is the 412 individualized legacy bricks that have been laid to commemorate the service of Lancaster County veterans. The money raised from the sale of the bricks was initially used to fund the memorial, while future sales will go toward continued maintenance of the park.

“We want people to know the park exists and that it’s a countywide attraction,” said Harris. “It’s a place where anyone from Lancaster County can come to honor someone in their family who served.”

Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County was built on 0.2 acres of Warwick Township land in 2019. Many local communities maintain their own military memorials, but

Veterans Honor Park is one of the few that recognizes the service of thousands of citizens from across the county.

“It was (Warwick Township board of supervisors member) Dave Kramer’s idea,” said Kreider. “The county had this idea, ‘We should have a Lancaster County veterans park.’ And Dave said, ‘Why not here?’ It’s a credit to Mr. Kramer because he helped move it forward.”

what ASSETS offers. Entrepreneurial training programs and boot camps, which run from six to 10 weeks, include the Business Validator and Incubator classes, housed in the Women’s Business Center. ASSETS marketing coordinator Kirsten McWilliams said the Incubator offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to “fine tune strategies within their business and tell (their) story.” “At the end, they have this business model to take out to the world,” she said. Impact consulting is also available.

ASSETS CEO Jamie Arroyo called the organization a “one-stop shop for starting and growing a business.” “Entrepreneurs can come to us to develop a business plan and get in-depth information on financing,” he said. “Our biggest strength is that we pair education with training and lending.” Arroyo added, “We are going to walk alongside the entrepreneur on their journey.”

Lititz recCenter triathlon amounts to survival of the fittest

Triathlons are demanding tests of athletic stamina, determination and preparedness. They’re also great tests of character.

The Lititz recCenter’s annual triathlon will be contested on Sunday, Aug. 6, beginning at 8 a.m.

That’s when some of the fittest athletes around will descend on Lititz to compete against opponents, the clock and themselves.

“Our goal is to keep people moving in different ways, to keep people healthy,” said Lititz recCenter’s fitness director, Simon Ababou. “We want to provide exceptional fitness programs to the community. It’s about taking care of yourself. We understand the benefits of being healthy. We always say, ‘Fitness is fun.’”

Nearly 250 athletes from Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata, New Holland, Lancaster, York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and New York are expected to compete in this year’s Lititz recCenter triathlon. Contestants range in age from 13 to 75.

Participants can compete individually or in teams of two or three. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three female and top three male finishers in each age group.

“(The competitors) come from all over,” said Ababou. “Most of them know each other, and you can see them conversing. Some of them are

very serious athletes. They train hard and compete, and they want to push hard and beat their time. It isn’t easy for them.”

As a competition, the Lititz recCenter triathlon is composed of three components: a 300-meter swim, a 15.8-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run. Conditioning plays a huge role in success, and for some participants simply finishing is an accomplishment.

The contest begins with swimming at Lititz Springs Pool. Then after hopping on their two-wheelers, the competitors traverse three challenging hills during the riding of the bicycle course between Lititz and Manheim.

The final leg of the event involves a moderate run through downtown Lititz streets and neighboring roadways.

“For some people, their strength is their swim, and their weakness is their run,” said Ababou. “Some people struggle with the swim. And others are like, ‘Just wait ’til I get to my bike; I’ll show you what I can do.’”

The Lititz recCenter triathlon serves as a fundraiser for its youth programs.

“It’s a community event,” said Ababou. “It’s bringing people from different cities and states to Lititz. It’s also great for the local businesses.”

Since the inception of the Lititz recCenter triathlon, the number of competitors has grown by more than 100. It’s also gained a certain reputation in
