Building A Community Of Recovery By Ann Mead Ash
For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery
Center, which will include a 30- to 90day intensive program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the ground-breaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute See TTC/Potter’s House pg 6
LCFCA Seeks To Recruit Volunteers By Chelsea Peifer
The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.
Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs See Firefighters pg 3

Jerilyn Oehme’s father, Richard, played golf several times per week. “The idea for holding a golf tournament (in his honor) came to me because that is something we always did together,” said Jerilyn recently. “That last Saturday before he passed, I played his last round of golf with him, so I thought one of the best things I can do to honor his memory is to hold a golf tournament.” The first Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, See Golf Tournament pg 12

trative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,� explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,� shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,� Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,� Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.� To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

Lititz Historical Foundation members invite local residents to grab lawn chairs, blankets, and their most colorful Hawaiian shirt and join them at a free concert. Funds raised by the event will benefit the foundation. The annual Evening of Music, which as been held for more than a dozen years, will take place in the Mary Oehme Gardens behind the Lititz Historical Foundation, 137 E. Main St., Lititz, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. Families are welcome. “Each year, a theme is chosen. This year’s theme is a beach party,� said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. This year’s guest performer will be Tony Torres and Real Gone, known for surf and rock tunes. Torres is well known in the area for his expertise on the guitar and distinctive vocal
ability. He and his band delve into all genres of music, but are especially adept at early surf and rockabilly covers. According to Van Brookhoven, beach-themed refreshments will be available by donation and there will be prizes and giveaways during the event. A freewill offering for the historical foundation will be received. Guests are also welcome to bring their own picnic food. The event is being underwritten by Luthercare, which has a facility at 600 E. Main St., Lititz. Van Brookhoven said that past Evening of Music events have attracted up to 200 attendees. Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,� Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment� at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,� said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with adminis-

This year’s Sommer Singspiel, a day camp hosted by the Lancaster Liederkranz, will take students entering grades three through 12 on a virtual journey through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9. “The students will learn vocabulary about the different modes of transportation available in Europe as well as packing items and famous destinations,� said Lisa Sempsey, who is one of four certified educators who will teach various aspects of German music and dances during the camp. “The music will be a wonderful mix of traditional pieces as well as students experiencing and creating music to accompany their ‘journey’ across the German-speaking parts of Europe. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity

A total of 144 high school seniors attended the 58th annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference held from June 10 to 14 at Messiah College in Grantham. Rotary District 7390 holds this annual conference for seniors who are selected and interviewed by the 43 Rotary Clubs in the district. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a learn-by-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in a fun, kid-friendly way,� said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and
the conference, the students voted on the top eight conferees. Seven of the students received the Lloyd Bollinger Award, a $350 cash award. The seven students were Harrison Perring of York Suburban High School, Victoria Jean-Baptiste of William Penn High School, Abigail Wurzbach of York Catholic High School, Lucy Svetec of Manheim Township High School, Nathanial Bamford of J.P. McCaskey High School, Avery Cook of East Pennsboro High School, and David Deitz of Eastern Lebanon County High School. The top conferee was awarded the William E. and Violet W. Nitrauer Leadership Award, a $700 cash award. The recipient this year was Katelyn Cocco of Hershey High School. Rodriguez Takes On New Leadership Role Eloy Rodriguez of New Providence has been appointed middle school principal and high school associate principal at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Lancaster campus for the 2018-19 school year. Rodriguez is currently the principal at the New Danville campus. A new principal for New Danville is being sought as Rodriguez begins his new role at the Lancaster campus. The Lancaster campus serves more than 500 students in sixth through 12th grades at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Among these students are youths from more than 30 countries, for whom Lancaster Mennonite serves as a boarding school. Rodriguez brings 15 years of experience to the role of principal. He began his teaching career as a third-grade teacher in Luray, Va. He also brings experience in project-based learning, an interdisciplinary approach that invites students to acquire knowledge and skills through investigation, integration, and synthesis of a complex question, problem, or challenge experienced in the real word. In 2009, he joined the Lancaster Mennonite team as the fifth-grade teacher at the New Danville campus, where he became the principal in 2013. During his nine years at the New Danville campus, Rodriguez and colleagues helped to implement the Blazer Buddy leadership program, a school learning garden, a composting and recycling program, a school-wide restorative discipline plan, student-led

necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord,” said Hoover. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day.” Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,” he said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,” he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff ’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. … There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.” Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with opioid addiction, and
we are trying to do things legislatively,” said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.” Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a secluded place (to pray),” he said. “For all those who struggle with addictions, there is hope.” As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a curriculum,” said Mwangi. “We are trusting God for a divine power to change every life that steps on this property, (where) the name of Jesus will be honored as lives are changed.” Following the dedication, five clients of TTC/Potter’s House gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river adjacent to the property. A decorative sign displayed in the Willow Street home where Nathanael Groff lives with his parents, Tim and Jill, reads “Not lucky but blessed.� Since third grade, Nathanael has carried the nickname “Lucky,� but after surviving stage IV colorectal cancer, Nathanael understands just how blessed he truly is. Nathanael graduated from LampeterStrasburg High School in 2002 and served in the Navy from 2004 to 2008. After moving back to Willow Street, he worked in auto sales. In the early part of 2017, however, he began losing weight rapidly and experienced debilitating stomach pains. Finally, on June 15, 2017, Nathanael went to the emergency room. Things moved rapidly from there. Along with the colorectal cancer diagnosis, Nathanael learned that the cancer had spread to his liver. A coloscopy bag was placed on June 19, and a month later, an abscess the size of a tennis ball was removed. Nathanael began chemotherapy in July, which continued into September. Surgery in October removed seven tumors from his liver. November saw the start of radiation therapy five days a week. Chemotherapy, radiation, and constant pain continued through January. On March 20, 2018, a rectal tumor was removed, and he began a chemotherapy regimen that will conclude in September. Currently, he is
considered cancer-free, but he will receive PET and MRI scans every three months for the foreseeable future. Due to his illness, the Groffs - which include Nathanael’s younger sister, Devon Rohrer, and her family - missed their annual trip to Ocean City, N.J. Nathanael is anticipating this year’s trip, which has been scheduled for after his final chemotherapy treatment. “Once I get there, (it will signify) I’m done, I’ve accomplished it,� Nathanael said. To support Nathanael, his classmate Justine Metzger and her father, Ron Metzger, have organized Score for a Cure, a charity basketball tournament and threepoint shooting contest. Proceeds from the event will help to offset Nathanael’s medical bills and will benefit the Cancer Patient Support Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. “The Barshinger Center saved my life,� Nathanael remarked. “(The staff members) always gave me an option and a hope.� Additionally, the institute supplied several referrals and chemo classes and provided pain management, transportation when needed, chaplains, social workers, a nurse navigator, and financial aid. “The place means a lot to us, and I’ll be forever grateful to them, that’s for sure,� Nathanael said. Score for a Cure will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament will run from 5 to

The games will be refereed by Ron and Tim’s professional PIAA colleagues. The three-point shooting contest is slated to begin at noon on Aug. 4. Anyone age 14 or older may enter the shooting contest, and the tournament is open to men’s rec league teams. Each contestant will have
one minute to take 15 shots from five positions on the three-point shooting line. The winners from each of three divisions will face off to determine the overall winner. Costs have been set to enter the tournament and the shooting contest, with a discounted price for those who also order an event T-shirt. Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, beginning at 1 p.m. The scramble format tournament will start with all groups of players teeing off simultaneously from different holes. Contests will include longest drive and closest to the pin awards for both male and female players. Other giveaways will be held at the tournament as well. Jerilyn said she chose Mental Health America (MHA) as the beneficiary of the fundraiser for personal reasons. “We don’t ever want to hide how my dad passed,” said Jerilyn, whose father took his own life in October 2017. “Suicide has a stigma attached to it. It’s hard for people to talk about,” she noted. “But if we don’t talk about it, that will never (change for the) better.” According to Jerilyn, MHA has a suicide prevention coalition and the organization will have a display at the tournament. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with (Richard’s) family as they celebrate (his) life,” said Scooter Haase, executive director with MHA of Lancaster County. “Events like this benefit our community through increased awareness of issues around suicide, as well as helping us get the word out that help is available.” Dinner, following the tournament, is planned for 5:30 p.m. “It will be a backyard barbecue meal catered by Overlook,” said Jerilyn, who added that the hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans on the menu are foods that were favored by her father. Jerilyn is hoping that many of her father’s friends will take part in the event. “I thought of the tournament for people who loved my Dad to come together,” she said, noting that her father played twice a week and took part in a yearly holiday dinner that involved a specific group of men. “It’s a huge group of guys, and men don’t always do things to remember people and work through their feelings,” she said. “I thought it would be a good way for them to get together.” Another goal of the tournament is to help raise awareness of mental health issues. “Lately a lot of celebrities have talked about depression, and I hope that gets a conversation started,” said Jerilyn. “(We hope to do) whatever we can do to help people who feel depressed or who have a loved one that is going through that.” The outing will be limited to 120 golfers, and Jerilyn is asking for participants to register by Saturday, Sept. 1.
