Second Richard Oehme Golf Tournament Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
When Jerilyn Oehme planned the first Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of her father in 2018, she had three goals. After losing her father to suicide, Jerilyn wanted to raise funds for Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to help with that organization’s
Suicide Prevention Coalition projects. She also wanted to raise awareness of and change the stigma surrounding suicide. Lastly, she hoped that her father’s male friends would come to the outing to remember her father and work to process their loss together. The tournament attracted more than 100 golfers and raised $10,000 for MHALC, and many of her
father’s friends did take part in the tournament. A photographer who took pictures of the players talked with the groups as they played and noted that Richard’s friends were sharing their memories of him. “It was helpful because men don’t always talk about feelings and emotions,” Jerilyn said. “I think it was nice for them to have this way to remember him.” See Golf Tournament pg 3

LCBC To Host Global Leadership Summit By Ann Mead Ash
LCBC Ephrata campus pastor Dan Sahd and Next Steps coordinator Dan Burge are eagerly looking forward to the day that the campus opens its doors to host the Global Leadership Summit (GLS), a simulcast of a live broadcast that originates in Chicago. This year’s event is scheduled to be held at the church, 6 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata, on Thursday, Aug. 8, and Friday, Aug. 9. “You can expect nationally known speakers in
the business and nonprofit worlds,” said Burge. “The unique thing is that it is not one person talking for two days; there are multiple speakers.” Indeed, up to 14 speakers from diverse backgrounds will deliver content in both interview and lecture-style formats. See Leadership Summit pg 3

The Friendship Heart Artists attend day and evening classes through Friendship Community’s Heart Gallery and Studio, located at 118 N. Water St. in downtown Lancaster. The creative arts studio for individuals with intellectual disabilities
and autism celebrates personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration. More than 70 different artists work with local professionals and volunteers to create and sell their masterpieces of various media, all while developing a sense of purpose, value, and joy. According to Dan’s mother, Joan Kahler, Dan has become more social and outgoing since he started completing artwork. He enjoys painting anything, from water scenes to animals. Penn State Extension will host its Summer Garden Experience on Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim. At 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., featured speaker Stephanie Cohen, author of “The Perennial Gardener’s Design Primer,” will present “Flowering Shrubs That Fit Into Perennial Borders” and “Perennials of Promise.” The event will also feature sessions on tomatoes and favorite vegetables, butterfly gardening, growing in containers, preserving herbs, native plants and bees, small fruit pruning, the spotted lanternfly,

Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides yearly summer camp experiences for more than 1,400 children on 110 acres of woodland. The organization hopes to see up to 300 people attend the event and to raise $3,000 from the meal and concert.

The group, which began making music in 1993, has traveled many miles over the years singing Southern gospel songs. The group formed with a passion to share how God’s love and forgiveness are given freely when the gift of Christ is accepted. Leadership Summit from pg 1 Burge noted that this year’s lineup represents the nonprofit sector, the church sector, and the business world. “I think GLS does an incredible job having a diverse lineup of speakers and content,” said Burge. “What that means is that someone who wants to be challenged in the business mind will be, or if they want to be challenged in social justice, they will be. It’s a very diverse faculty and content.” Among this year’s speakers will be adventurer and survival expert Bear Grylls, known for having been a member of the British Special Forces, climbing Mount Everest, and crossing the Arctic Ocean in an inflatable raft. Grylls is also known as a supporter of the Alpha Course and for his groundbreaking television work. Danielle Strickland, pastor, author, and justice advocate, will also speak. Strickland was a mem-
ber of the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and is an ambassador for Stop the Traffik. Burge noted that author Patrick Lencioni will speak about the dynamics of teams. “He is one (speaker) that (attendees) want back every year,” noted Burge. Other speakers will include pastor Craig Groeschel; entertainment marketer Bozoma Saint John; author and leadership coach Jo Saxton; speaker and researcher Jason Dorsey; Aja Brown, mayor of the city of Compton, Calif.; fashion design founder and women’s advocate Liz Bohannon; social entrepreneur Dr. Krish Kandiah; author and leadership consultant Todd Henry; author, blogger, and entrepreneur Jia Jiang; former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss; and author and producer DeVon Franklin. Burge noted that joining a localized host
site has networking advantages for those who attend. “In the Ephrata community, there are so many businesses and churches (attending), and there are so many people to rub shoulders with that you never thought (you might meet).” Sahd added that last year’s event drew more than 300 attendees and that this year’s registration number is quickly approaching that mark. “We really want to be a resource to leaders in our community at any level,” he noted, adding that all types of leaders can benefit from GLS, ranging from those leading in their own homes to those who lead large organizations. “For folks who don’t know they’re leaders, but are curious, this will inspire them,” he said. “We feel it is a unique way to resource the community, and we are uniquely equipped to provide this.” Sahd added that local organizations that plan to bring employees to the venue include CrossNet Ministries of New Holland and
the Ephrata School District administrative team. Since many of the speakers will be conversing on their writing topics, LCBC is prepared to help attendees who want more content than what is available on the screen. “This is just good information,” said Burge. “You receive a notebook to take tons of notes, (but) we have a bookstore where books related to the content may be purchased.” GLS at LCBC Ephrata will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration on Aug. 8. Sanctuary doors will open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 and 9, and speakers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Because the simulcast originates in the Central time zone, the event will run until 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 8. The Pennsylvania Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) recently recognized recipients of its annual Public Safety Awards. Each year, the Pennsylvania VFW presents awards to an outstanding firefighter, police officer and emergency medical technician to honor them for the critical roles they fill as first responders. This year’s award winners are residents of Slippery Rock, Lititz and Hermitage. The Firefighter of the Year is retired Rothsville Volunteer Fire Company Chief Claude Sam Young Jr. of Lititz, who was sponsored by VFW Post 3376 in Ephrata. Young has served as a firefighter for 60 years, 30 of those years as station chief. The John Radko Police Officer of the Year is Hermitage Chief of Police Paul Eric Jewell. He was sponsored by VFW Post 7599 in Transfer. The Emergency Medical Technician of the Year is Slippery Rock firefighter and emergency medical technician Larry Pifer, a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was sponsored by VFW Post 6231 in Slippery Rock. Nominations for Pennsylvania VFW Public Safety Awards must be processed through a local VFW Post with a nomination letter and resume from the sponsoring safety organization. State winners advance to the national level for consideration as the VFW’s national first responder award winners. The Department of Pennsylvania VFW consists of 74,000 members in 420 posts. The Veterans of Foreign Wars in the United States is headquartered in Kansas City, Mo.
“The tournament, in memory of Mr. Oehme, has not only brought to light how nondiscriminating the disease is, but has also brought awareness to the epidemic we are struggling with,” said McDevitt. “The proceeds of the tournament have allowed us to increase suicide prevention in education and support in schools and senior centers, (and) it has also allowed us to increase efforts in our gunlock project.” Jerilyn has also been encouraged by the frank discussions of suicide she has heard in the media. “It has been cool in the past year hearing how much more (suicide) is being talked about,” she said, pointing to the book and podcast titled “Life After Suicide” by Dr. Jennifer Ashton. Jerilyn noted, “People are talking about it and talking about mental health. Not to normalize it, but to make it so it’s OK to talk when you struggle.” Jerilyn is asking those who wish to participate in the tournament to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Dutchland Dulcimer Gathering Slated The fifth annual Dutchland Dulcimer Gathering will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The mountain dulcimer is a traditional American folk instrument. The gathering will include classes, a jam session on the night of July 26, and a concert in the evening on July 27. A variety of instructors will be featured, including 2018 national champion Wendy Songe and 2008 national champion Nina Zanetti. Along with them, Dave Haas, Butch Ross, Bill Collins, and Judy and Kirk House will teach classes for
beginners to experts. Loaner instruments are available. Additionally, Andy Fox will teach guitar classes. The second Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 1:15 p.m. The scramble format tournament will start with all groups of players teeing off simultaneously from different holes. Contests will include longest drive and closest to the pin awards for both male and female players. Other giveaways will be held during the tournament as well. Dinner, following the tournament, is planned for 5:30 p.m. “It will be a backyard barbecue meal catered by Overlook,” said Jerilyn, who added that the hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans on the menu are foods that were favored by her father. Jerilyn recently met with Kim McDevitt, who had become executive director of MHALC just before last year’s tournament. “(McDevitt) has a lot of great ideas and initiatives,” said Jerilyn. One of those initiatives is a program that will give out free gunlocks and suicide prevention information to those who purchase firearms.

Concert Will Support MFE Students on tour with the Paul Green Rock Academy (PGRA) will perform a “Kids Rock the Park” fundraising concert of classic rock songs at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. The group will play from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and at the top of the set, the performers will be joined by select Music For Everyone (MFE) camp students for two numbers. The local group One Too Many will perform starting sometime between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and continuing until 8 pm. The PGRA students are embarking on a tour that will take them from Norwalk, Conn., to Pittsburgh and back. PGRA saw the opportunity to support MFE, a group of Lancaster community music education advocates, and this opportunity coincided with the music camps. The camps, which began on July 16, will run through Tuesday, July 30, and from July 30 to Friday, Aug. 2. At the concert, the MFE camp students will perform “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve and “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin. PGRA is the latest endeavor from School of
Rock founder Paul Green, dedicated to teaching young musicians. PGRA is modeled after the original music performance-based educational concept School of Rock, which Green sold in 2010 and which currently has more than 200 franchised schools around the world. PGRA is an audition-only program in which every student tours, plays professional-level shows, and plays with guest stars. MFE is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides resources and experiences in support of music education. Since 2006, executive director and founder John Gerdy and assistant director Brendan Stengle have worked in the community to raise money for music education in the county, including nearly $2 million in grants, scholarships, and direct program support to schools and community arts groups. The group had its first public performance in October 2017, when it played two songs at a recital at McCaskey High School. The
“Setting The Table” Will Fund Food Bank
10-member band has played at various venues in Lancaster County and at Lancaster city’s New Year’s Eve event in 2018. Local artist Loryn Spangler-Jones will also create artwork available for purchase as she paints on site during the concert. A mixed media artist, Spangler-Jones exhibits locally and is the founder of LSJ Studios in downtown Lancaster. Her work can be found in several different publications, from major art magazines to coffee table art books. All proceeds will go to MFE. The Walk-O Taco and Reunion food trucks will be on-site, and beverages will be available from Tellus360. All proceeds from a commemorative beverage cup and collection buckets will be donated to MFE. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted for MFE. The concert is produced by Amy Banks of Robin-Banks Entertainment and Paul Green, in conjunction with the City of Lancaster, and is sponsored by Wenger Wealth.

Maria Thompson Corley is a pianist, composer, arranger, and writer. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she has appeared on radio, television, and concert stages in Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Europe, both as a solo artist and as a collaborative artist. She has released several albums. “Dreamer”
includes countertenor Darryl Taylor, “Soulscapes” features piano music by African American women, and a third album records the first 12 of H. Leslie Adams’ “Twenty-Six Etudes for Solo Piano.” Thompson Corley’s recording of “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds was featured in the HBO Family documentary “Kabreeya’s Salad Days,” and her performance of the “Etude in C-Sharp Minor” by Adams is included in the documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” Kiana Corley is a 21-year old musician based out of Lancaster. She draws from the stylings of Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas, Eryn Allen Kane, and other similar-sounding artists. Her sound can best be described as acoustic soul intertwined with twinges of pop. When singer-songwriter Kiana Corley saw that the Crispus Attucks Community Center had been forced to cut back its meal service from five to two days a week, she told her mother, concert pianist Maria Thompson Corley, that she wanted to do something about it. The two musicians gathered local performing artists to present a concert on June 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. Exactly two months later, on Friday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m., the women will host another edition of “Setting the Table,” this one at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. In addition to performances by the Corleys, the concert will include singers Anne Kempsell, Jeremiah Miller, Megan and Jay Poff, David Miron, and Rachel Rune Farmer. The program will open with a choral piece featuring Jennifer Mattson and will continue with music selections in many styles, such as classical, pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and Broadway musical, both sung and instrumental. Additional musicians will include Christy Banks, clarinet; Bradley Mattson, trumpet; Matt Monticchio, piano; Tom Hilliker, bass; and Mitch Cooper, drums. Marian Villieux will perform a dance.
