Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs.

Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania

envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Farm Museum is a stateoperated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors per year.

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Val-

ley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from

southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to

Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac.

Harris contacted the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones

were moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground

session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.

Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed a trademarked model for understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.

“One of the things she really stresses is the positive approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained.

“Are they in fight, fright, flight?” Next, Karick said, caregivers should use their words, tone of voice, and facial expressions to make it clear that they stand in support. “Make it known you are on their side,” she said.

“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it

Township receives grant

Manheim Township is planning its eighth Stream Restoration Project, which will use a $390,000 grant from the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC). The grant funds, along with a $50,000 match from the township, will cover the costs related to the design, permitting, and construction of this project. Design and permitting will occur in 2023

with construction anticipated to occur in 2024.

The project is known as Grandview Stream Restoration Phase II and is an extension of Phase I on this unnamed tributary to the Conestoga Creek. Phase I was constructed in the summer of 2020. Phase II consists of 1,650 feet of stream

that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with dementia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,” she said.

For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not.

There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendly lancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

Railroad and actively worked for the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and

it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installation, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more people to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancaster history.org.

The purpose of this project is to address problematic bank erosion and enhance ecological function by establishing a dedicated floodplain corridor to mitigate potentially erosive and unstable streambank conditions. “We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. Manheim Township has already completed seven stream restoration projects and restored a total of 10,860 feet of impaired streams within this priority watershed, thus reducing sediment loading in the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay by 489,777 pounds annually. When completed, this project will add another reduction of 74,052 pounds of sediment annually to that total.

we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”
