Library Dedicates Children’s Discovery Patio When Joyce Sands, executive director of the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL), talks about the Children’s Discovery Patio, that officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 22, the excitement in her voice is unmistakable. “Youth services always expressed a desire to hold programs out here, but (the patio) wasn’t fenced in,” explained Sands, who noted that at the edge of the patio, there is a significant drop to the lawn below. The possibility of using the space took steps toward reality in the summer of 2018, when the library took part in an online funding contest that provided seed money to create an educational outdoor space. Now, the library, located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, has created the educational outdoor space See Patio pg 6

Bucking the trend of upscale galas requiring dancing shoes, the latest fundraiser for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County will swing the opposite direction. The event on Sunday, July 21, will require closed-toe shoes and will be held at Stumpy’s Hatchet House, 405 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 7 to 10 p.m. Pet Pantry medical director Bryan Langlois explained that he has done some unique fundraisers as an individual - such as spend a weekend locked inside a dog cage - but he wanted to extend his efforts to include more people, and he wanted something new and different. For the past seven years, the residents of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, have hosted a Christmas in July event to collect school supplies for students in need in Lancaster County. While the collection drive usually ran for several weeks and culminated in one special event, this year’s Christmas in July will be held on one day only. “We wanted to try something new,” explained event chair Stephanie Kaufhold. She is supported in planning the event by six committees that each have at least five residents. Over the past seven years, Christmas in July efforts raised $14,000 for the purchase of uniforms for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students, collected approximately the same amount in school supply donations, and generated $4,500 to purchase school supplies. This year, rather than earmark proceeds and cash donations, the

To get Woodcrest Villa residents in the holiday spirit of generosity, the decoration committee has planned to decorate several gathering areas within the community. The cookie committee has also been busy contacting residents who have agreed to provide baked goods for the event.

and give them access to light barbecue fare and one serving of beer or wine each, as well as giant Jenga and Connect Four games. The top tier will include the same benefits of the basic tier, with the addition of two hours of throwing time. Stumpy’s will provide training to everyone who will be throwing. Having the build of a lumberjack is not a requirement to throw a hatchet successfully. “It’s not a strength thing,” Langlois said. “It’s just finesse.” However, attendees are encouraged to don their best

lumberjack attire, as a costume contest will be held during the event. Folks may throw as individuals, but a Golden Hatchet trophy will be awarded to the team of four that has the best score. Langlois said he hopes to make this an annual event and offer a trophy each year. All attendees will have opportunities to enter drawings for prize baskets. Langlois hopes to attract at least 100 people to the event. Tickets should be purchased in advance, but they will also be sold at the door. and they feel good and confident.” Trinity Preschool uses play-based curricula, and while there are certainly teacherdirected activities, there are also plenty of opportunities for independent play and learning. The school works with the Hempfield School District to ensure that students are prepared to enter kindergarten, or as McKelvey called it, “big kids’ school.” He noted that calling elementary school “real school” undermines the legitimacy of preschool and the education students receive there. At Trinity Preschool, students are guided to develop physically, emotionally, and socially. They learn the basics of critical

thinking, stimulate language development, begin to self-regulate, and build a foundation for future learning. Trinity Preschool is an outreach commission of Trinity UCC, but it is not faith-based, which Rankin noted has increased the diversity of the attendees. There are two exceptions: Grace is said at meals to model gratitude, and Rankin gives a lesson on the story of Christmas in December. For more information about Trinity Preschool, readers may email McKelvey at preschool@trinityeastpete.org. Folks with questions about Friendship Fest may call the church office at 717-569-1632.

Attendees must be age 21 or older. “A lot of us at the pantry are excited about it,” Langlois remarked. “We hope it will generate some interest. Hopefully we can build on it.” The proceeds from the event will be used to support the Pet Pantry’s veterinary programs, which Langlois oversees. Fridays are feral cat days, and area veterinarians help on those days to spay and neuter feral cats that will be released back into their habitats as part of the Trap/ Neuter/Release (TNR) program. On the other four weekdays, Langlois and three veterinary technicians perform surgeries and provide other veterinary care to stray and adoptable animals as well as to owned pets. The Pet Pantry provides subsidized veterinary services to clients with financial needs who are referred by their primary veterinarians. “We take care of immediate needs, then they go back to their regular vets,”

Langlois explained. So far in 2019, the Pet Pantry has provided more than $85,000 in discounted veterinary services and performed greater than 560 TNR surgeries. The organization also supports pets in just over 200 households, providing food so that the animals do not have to be surrendered because of financial need. Pet food is distributed in Gap and at the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, once a month and at Water Street Mission twice a month. “For people on disability or Social Security, we provide long-term help, but for people who have a temporary hardship, we’re there for them too,” Langlois said. “We pride ourselves on helping directly in Lancaster County.” For more information about the Pet Pantry, readers may visit www.pet pantrylc.org, email petpantryoflancaster@ gmail.com, or call 717-983-8878.

When the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC) moved into its new building at 2340 State St., East Petersburg, in 1968, one of the first things it did was launch an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group. Then, at pastor George Geisler’s behest, the church started a nursery school. While other ministries have come and gone during the past half-century, both the AA group and Trinity Preschool are still thriving. “We’re a place for people to come and find support and a place for families and children to learn and grow,” commented the Rev. Dr. Chris Rankin. The preschool opened with 15 students, and Geisler’s wife, Janice, was the first teacher. At the time, it was one of only three nursery schools in the area, Rankin reported. Over the years, enrollment increased, reaching a high of 90 in 1990. Currently, 63 children are registered for the 2019-20 school year. Trinity Preschool offers morning classes for youngsters ages 2 through 5, as well as afternoon classes for 4- and 5-year-olds. Rankin and preschool director Sean McKelvey hope that families that have been involved with the school in the past five decades will attend a celebration of the preschool’s 50th anniversary that will be held in conjunction with Trinity UCC’s fifth annual Friendship Fest on Sunday, July 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. Anyone else who would like to enjoy food, fun, and entertainment is

also invited to attend the event. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. “The third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. Friendship Fest started as a way to invite the community to Trinity for ice cream,” Rankin explained, adding that the event is organized by the church’s evangelism committee. Ice cream, hot dogs, and beverages will be served at the event. A variety of games will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. Face painting will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. A cake walk, which McKelvey described as “musical chairs with cake,” will also take place. A bounce house will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. To close out the event, beginning at 6 p.m., Fred “Phredd” McNaughton will perform family-friendly songs while accompanying himself with a ukulele. Additionally, during the event, the church building will be open. McKelvey and the rest of the preschool staff members plan to be on hand . McKelvey has served as preschool director for two years. Jill LaVenice is the newest teacher; she attended Trinity Preschool as a child. Betty Cox, who is an assistant with the two- and three-day classes, is the longest-serving staff member, with 32 years. “My son attended, so I knew it was a good place,” Cox said of her decision to work at the preschool. “It’s fun to work with children and see them grow. SSC To Present “Evita” In New Eater Theater

R043380

By Chelsea Peifer

Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will present the Tony Award-winning musical “Evita” for its first show in the Eater Theater, the new main-stage theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, July 19 to 21; Friday to Sunday, July 26 to 28; and Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 1 to 4, at the Marietta Center for the Arts. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday shows, which will be at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.susquehanna stageco.com or by calling 717-426-1277. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics and book by Tim Rice, “Evita” follows the true story of young and ambitious Eva Perón’s rise to power in Argentina. SSC actress Julia Tighe Howey, who will portray Eva, described the show as a rock opera that tells the story through songs like the mega-hit “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” “The music is fun and exciting and classic,” said Tighe Howey.

A series of flashbacks follows Eva from her start as an impoverished child and teenager to how she became a woman of influence and power as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva was first lady from 1946 until she died in 1952 at the age of 33. “Eva is adored and worshipped by so many people. She came from absolutely nothing and worked herself to the top, not always making the best choices along the way, but I think her heart was always behind it,” said Tighe Howey. “It is one of those dream roles to get into, and it’s a little nerve-wracking,” she continued. “I admire her as a woman because she found a way to rise in a world where women just weren’t leaders. Her husband was in charge, but she kind of ruled the roost.” Additional cast members will include Kevin Ditzler as Juan Perón, Jared Korb as Che, Joe Kelly as Magaldi, and Cara Ditzler as the Mistress. Ensemble members include Stella Breese, Addison DeLuca, Elliot Ditzler, Norah Ditzler, Charlotte Evans, Emma Jahn, Liam Nornhold, Olivia Alberto, Charis Alkinburgh, Lily Chow, Sophie Eckman, Ricky Fitts, Ashtyn Hess, Jered Mackison, Cameron Snelbaker, Zac Snyder, Kendall Winters, Dave Anderson, Kyle Brubaker, George Chow, Kevin Conti, Mark Evans, Alison Hoke-Fitts, Ali Fleming, AJ Germaine, Kara Hartman, Kris Hess, Bonnie Northeimer, Amanda Richardson, Jackie Roberts, Tyler Schouppe, Dot Smith, and Sara Ulrich.

Julia Tighe Howey will star as Eva Perón in the Susquehanna Stage Company production of the Tony Award-winning rock opera “Evita” in the Eater Theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts. Performances are scheduled for select dates from July 19 to Aug. 4. “The cast overall is just phenomenal. From the little kids to the teenagers and adults, there’s not anyone on stage who isn’t giving their all,” stated Tighe Howey. “Everybody is so energized with this new venue.” Sponsored by the Eater Family Foundation, the main-stage Eater Theater has been under construction since the end of May and currently seats 156 people. SSC chairman of the board Kyle Brubaker noted that future renovations to the former church sanctuary will include adding balcony seating to further increase seating capacity. “I’m really excited about the new space and what it has to offer,” said Brubaker.

The Gallery Stage, where SSC performed “Company” earlier this year, will be set up with concessions for sale and tables to allow patrons to mingle during intermission as well as before and after the show. In addition to being the home of SSC, the Marietta Center for the Arts serves as a hub for educational opportunities with artfocused classes offered year-round for children and adults. Going forward, the venue will be available for rentals, including weddings and gatherings of various sizes. To learn more, readers may visit https://mariettaarts.org.

purchase is a crucial moment. “(If the clerk says,) ‘We are trying to prevent suicide by firearm, and we’d like you to accept this (free) lock’ … at that possible point of interaction that may … dissuade someone having mental health issues (from using) a firearm against themself,” explained Leckow. Leckow noted that MHALC would like to see gun shop owners and personnel receive QPR Suicide Prevention Training. QPR stands for “Question Persuade Refer.” Training will teach personnel to recognize warning signs that an individual is in suicide crisis and to ask questions and refer that person for help. UPMC Lititz Launches New Program

Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) earned the 152nd spot in the 2019 list of Top 200 Community Banks and Thrifts, as ranked nationally by American Banker magazine. JBT ranked 13th among 18 Pennsylvania-based banks listed, and this is the 11th consecutive year that JBT has earned the Top 200 national ranking. A total of 601 community banks and thrifts nationwide with assets of less than $2 billion were qualified to be evaluated by three-year average Return On Average

Equity (ROAE) through Dec. 31, 2018, and rankings were based on an analysis of data compiled by Capital Performance Group. JBT had an average of 9.7%. JBT serves customers in and around Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Founded in 1873, JBT currently has assets of $625 million and 14 banking locations. For more information about JBT, readers may visit www.jbt.bank or contact the JBT Client Resource Center at 717-274-5180, option 1. JBT is a member of the FDIC.

Rezendes said that she would love to create nature-geared programs for Small to lead on the patio. MTPL board member Jennie Barbieri, who serves as a liaison for children’s programming, said that the educational aspect is important to her as someone who used

the library often as a child. “My mother is an immigrant from Sicily,” explained Barbieri, who noted that her mother’s hometown in Italy did not have a library. “We were (frequent) library users. I did the summer reading programs with my brother and sister.” Barbieri has been visiting MTPL for six years with her son, Evan. “We love it,” she said, but noted that she also longed for an outside area. “We have attended many story times in the silo, and I always peered out the

Stabler Foundation, Luci Steele, the Kiwanis Club of Lititz, the Manheim Township Lions Club, and the Four Seasons Garden Club. In addition to holding programs in the new space, the patio area, located on the north side of the building, will be designed to be educational. “This trough will be along the wall,” said Sands, gesturing to a container that was already in the garden. “We will plant herbs in the trough, and those will be for the children to pick and look at under a magnifying glass at a station.” To attract wildlife, birdhouses and feeders and a birdbath will be included in the garden, and a decorative art post will be added. Children who frequent the library will also be making mosaic tiles to create a shadow clock in the space. Youth services manager Karin Rezendes noted that in addition to picnic tables, a couple of sorting tables will be available for children to use. “(Sorting tables involve) loose parts play, (which is) the antithesis of high-tech toys,” explained Rezendes, who added that the tables will hold pine cones, seashells, wooden spools, and other items for children to manipulate; sort by size, color, or type; count; build with; or use in other imaginative ways. “It’s very open-ended play without a lot of instruction,” she stated. Nine Discovery Boxes have been created to use on the patio or be checked out of the library. The boxes were put together by Rezendes and Kristyn Small, a library assistant who is also a naturalist. One of the boxes is dedicated to birds, and it contains a story book, a nonfiction book, a field guide,

Schreiber Reaches $1 Million Goal

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position. Graduates of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster were congratulated by center director Heather Hinkel (back, second from right). Among the graduates are (front, from left) Madison Linton, Connor Rice, Tahlia Wirick, (middle) Ryan Maurer, Sydney Saville, Quincy Myer, James Carroll, (back) Parker Foye, Nicholas Rhine, and Amanda Elligson. Students thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary school through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The OrtonGillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial

Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrensdyslexiacenteroflancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers may call 717-481-5680 or email cdclancaster pa@gmail.com for information about the center.

On June 9, American Heritage Girls (AHG) Troop PA0412 held its Court of Awards at Lake View Bible Church in Manheim. AHG is a character development organization for girls ages 5 to 18 with emphases on faith, service, and fun. AHG Troop PA0412 meets every other Monday evening from September through May at Lake View Bible Church. During the Court of Awards ceremony, the girls received the badges, patches, and service stars that they had earned since the start of 2019. Service stars are awarded for different hours of service depending on the girl’s age. Troop PA0412 had a combined total of 225 hours of service, and 110 badges were earned by completing requirements set by the national organization. The evening opened and closed with a flag ceremony led

multi-troop or community outreach activity. The final step is a Board of Review interview. Mya worked to help the younger girls earn their PRAY patch by holding a regular meeting during which she taught the Parable of the Fig Tree and prepared a corresponding craft for the Explorers, Tenderhearts, and Pathfinders. For her special event, Mya planned a Veterans Day flag ceremony. Veterans and their families were invited to stand front and center to receive a rose as a token of gratitude. Mya also shared the history of Veterans Day, including how it was added to the national calendar. Mya’s multi-troop outreach project involved teaching 21 girls, ranging from ages 5 to 12, at a Heimlich Heroes event. Each participant received a certificate of completion after passing both a written test and successful hands-on application of the maneuver, which included simulating the rescue of a person in need and self-help. “This project was meaningful to me because I am here today as a result of a Heimlich hero, who saved my mom when she was a little girl. When everyone else panicked, he acted with swift, calm resolve,” Mya shared. “Years later, my mama saved my little sister’s life by responding similarly. Additionally, my papa has always taught me it is better to be prepared and not need it than to need it and not be prepared. I suppose I saw a parallel between the two. I am grateful for the privilege to have shared a life-saving skill with those younger girls.” To learn more about American Heritage Girls or to find a troop to become involved in, interested individuals may visit https:// americanheritagegirls.org.
