reach to other great community resources, that is a blessing for everyone,” said Tom Ellis, interim president of the foundation. In celebration of the organization’s anniversary, a gala and art auction will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Tickets, which will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 1, at www.longspark.org, will be limited. Board member Janice Henry is chairing the event. A segment of the event will be devoted to a presentation by wellknown local architect Gregory Scott, whose firm originally designed the amphitheater. Scott will look back on the history of the iconic building, which began when the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. The live auction of original art, which will benefit the foundation, will showcase members of the Echo Valley Art Group. A highlight of that portion of the event will be the sale of a commissioned piece created by artist Lisa Madenspacher. Her rendition of the amphitheater pays homage to the concerts and fireworks with which the building is associated. Another auction item will poke fun at the amphitheater’s long association with wild birds. “We have a bird feeder that was created as a fundraiser,” said Ellis, who noted that the roof of the feeder has the same profile as the amphitheater. “We are calling it an amphi-feeder.” The feeder was fabricated and painted by Viocity Group and donated by Woodstream Corporation. Food for the gala will be created by former White House chef John Moeller, known for owning and preparing cuisine at the Greenfield Restaurant and Bar.

Book Aims To Empower Families BY ANN MEAD ASH

For more than a decade, Joel Jakubowski, who is now the men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, has given presentations in Pennsylvania and around the country to help educate family members of those who are ex periencing addiction to drugs or alcohol. A little more than four years ago, Jakubowski started listening to all the people who were encouraging him to write a book on the subject. “One lady squeezed my arm and said, ‘Joel, please write a book,’” Jakubowski recalled. “I went home and looked at my (presentations),” Jakubowski recalled. “I wrote the book in like six hours.” Over the two weeks after writing the draft, Jakubowski edited his writing. “I wanted to make it so people knew they could read it quickly,” he recalled. “It’s a rescue tool.” See The Potter’s House pg 5

LSO Announces Butterman As Music Director The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has named Michael Butterman as its next music director following a search that lasted more than two years. The LSO received over 190 applications for the position and, with the help of its search committee, invited four finalists to conduct a week in Lancaster. The orchestra’s board voted unanimously to install Butterman in the position, marking the second time in the LSO’s 75-year history that it has named a new music director. Butterman began his new role on July 1 and will conduct four of the orchestra’s five Masterworks concerts of the 2022-23 season starting in October. Butterman is perhaps best known for his work as music director of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. He may also be recognized for his 19-year association with the Rochester Philhar-

Joel Jakubowski of The Potter’s House has written a book to help families dealing with addiction.

The Veritas Community will kick off a series titled “The Gospel According to Salvador Dali” on Sunday, July 17. Continuing on Sundays through Aug. 21, Veritas will ex plore the connection between Dali’s work and living a life centered on Jesus and the kingdom of God at 10:30 a.m. The Veritas Community meets at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Each week, attendees will look at one piece of Dali’s work, talk about it, and see how that piece connects to passages of Scripture. The schedule will feature “Christ of Saint John of the Cross” on July 17; “Geopolticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man” on July 24; “The Face of War” on July 31; “Autumnal Cannibalism” on Aug. 7; “Metamorphosis of Narcissus” on Aug. 14; and “Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory” on Aug. 21. Each gathering will include musical worship, prayer, dialogue around

He listed workaholism, codependency, and addiction to exercise as other unhealthy choices humans make. “Addicts cope with it by medicating,” said Jakubowski. “Parents have to understand that addiction is much more than a relational or social component,” he said, noting that addiction involves spiritual, neurobiological, and emotional aspects. “There’s a spiritual component that looks like
