Manheim Township

Red, white and blue. Grand old flag. Star-spangled banner. Old Glory.
The United States of America’s flag is a symbol of freedom and honor and patriotism. It reflects our ideals and stands for all that we hold dear and the people who have defended our beliefs.
At Neffsville Terrace, 6 Terrace Drive, Lancaster, Flag Day is held in high esteem.
“Flag Day is an important day, and I think sometimes it gets overlooked,” said Kristi Haines, the director of social services for Neffsville Terrace. “In my opinion, it’s a day of independence. W hen I was younger, I didn’t appreciate the flag as much as I do now. When I look at the flag now, I see the veterans who fought for it.”
County is home to 50 unincorporated communities, or villages, similar to Neffsville. But none are quite like Neffsville.
Located in north central Manheim Township, 3 miles north of the city of Lancaster, Neffsville is a historic unincorporated community. It grew up and evolved around the Lititz Pike, and because Neffsville’s boundaries are undefined, it is hard to know exactly how many citizens reside there.
“It starts at Blossom Hill and runs all the way up to the (Lancaster) Airport,” said Ben Webber, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society. “I would say that it’s more narrow than it is long; it’s only a couple of blocks wide. Over the years, urban sprawl has extended Neffsville in almost every direction. It’s really steeped in a lot of history and character.”
Today, Neffsville is known as much for what’s located there as its rich history. In addition to the Lancaster Airport, Neffsville hosts some of the main buildings of the Manheim Township School District, Brethren Village Retirement Community and the Manheim Township Athletic Complex.
At the corner of Lititz Pike and Valley Road, where a Turkey Hill now resides, a general store once stood, and before that Fiddler’s Green hotel.
“Neffsville is a very special place. It’s unique,” said Webber. “It’s something that’s been given to us by our ancestors at almost no cost.”
“It’s nestled next to Blossom Hill, and at one time it had productive fields all around it,” Webber added. “The fact that it had a major route going through it helped it become a fruitful community. It’s probably one of the most distinguishable unincorporated communities in Lancaster County. It’s a friendly community.”
Neffsville’s history predates its settling by John Christian Neff and his descendants in the late 1700s. Prior to that, it was the site of a large Native American settlement.
Since its settling by Neff, Neffsville has always been a thriving place, with churches, commerce and various modes of transportation.
“At one time, it was a small hub with agrarian fields around it,” said Webber. “Then, beginning in the 1950s, you started to see suburbs and urban sprawl expanding Neffsville to the west and north,
with the introduction of the airport. Now all those fields are gone and developed into something else.”
Webber said during the century prior to 1950, Neffsville didn’t grow all that much. He also said the population of Neffsville in 1940 was about 800 residents.
“I think history is important,” said Webber. “I find it exciting to think about what our community used to be, mark its progress over time and see where it’s gone. We’re charting the future and leaving a legacy behind. And I find that hopeful.”
In the middle of June, Neffsville Terrace celebrated Flag Day with a bang. Some 30 residents - about half of whom were veterans - and family members gathered at the Manheim Township independent living facility to express what the old “stars and stripes” meant to them.

BY ANN MEAD ASHMore than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm,
and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began. HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.;
Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster, will host a “Sundaes and Songs” event on Friday, July 14, at 6 p.m. This outdoor event will feature games for children, free ice cream with all the fixings, and trolley rides for those who want to tour the neighborhood in the open air trolley.
The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will present a concert at 7 p.m. Attendees may bring lawn chairs and enjoy an ice cream sundae while listening to selections including the march “The Liberty Bell”; “Sway”; “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” featuring a
trombone solo by Dale Diller; “St. Thomas”; “A Trumpeter’s Prayer” with a solo by Joe Gagliardi; “Shania!”; “At the Gremlin Ball,” featuring a solo by Howard Boots; selections from “Grease”; “Wooly Bully”; “Carry On Wayward Son”; “America the Beautiful”; and “God Bless America.” The band is directed by Boots, who is a music educator, and consists of 40 members.
The event is free and open to the public. In the case of rain, the event will be postponed until Friday, July 21.

“I think Flag Day is important for us because we have a lot of veterans,” said Haines. “W hen they look at the flag, they see their service to our country. To make that day special, it’s really important to them. I didn’t want to make Flag Day an afterthought.”
Neffsville Terrace’s hourlong Flag Day ceremony featured a speech by Lt. Adrian Aponte of the Salvation Army, Lancaster Corps, and a donation of a flag by American Legion Post 56 of Lititz. A trio of Manheim Township students - Audrey Pavlica, Hallie Shelton and Sophia Irvine - sang a medley of patriotic tunes, while Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard provided a rifle salute and a performance of taps.
“Everyone worked together to make it happen,” said Haines. “It all came together without a hitch. It was another way to say thank you to
our veterans. I think our residents liked that they could interact with the visitors who were there. They could reflect on times they had 30 or 40 years ago.”
“The flag means to me that our country is free, and I hope for it to stay that way,” said resident and World War II veteran Walter Reidy.
“The flag means freedom and symbolizes all that the veterans did for us to keep our freedom alive today,” said resident Diane Wasylenko.
The gathering was part of an annual Flag Day celebration undertaken by Neffsville Terrace. Haines said that Neffsville Terrace doesn’t mark other patriotic holidays in quite the same manner.
Founded in 1969, Neffsville Terrace is home to about 100 residents. For additional information about Neffsville Terrace, go to www.neffsvilleterrace.com.

The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area will hold its 22nd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is hosted each year by the Kiwanis Club and Wilbur Chocolate on the Saturday before Columbus Day. All money raised supports children’s charities, such as the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic and Lititz and Manheim Township libraries.
All the chefs and chocolatiers donate their time and
treats, and merchants provide locations for the chocolatiers to distribute food.
The event has sold out in recent years, so early ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets went on sale on July 1, and more than 500 tickets were sold within the first 24 hours. To purchase tickets, visit www.lititzchocolatewalk.com or stop by Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Lititz Public
Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; or Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.
Over the course of the event’s existence, the Kiwanis Club - which has fewer than 25 active members - has raised more than $1 million for local children’s charities, with more than $100,000 raised last year. As part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization, the Lititz club is devoted to helping the children of the world, one child, one commu-
nity at a time.
At least 150 volunteers are needed for the Chocolate Walk. Two shifts are available, and each volunteer will receive a pass to enjoy five free samples of his or her choice. To volunteer, email Louise at LStickler49@ hotmail.com.
For more information on the Chocolate Walk, sponsorships or membership in the club, call the hotline at 717560-2295, email kiwanis clublititz@gmail.com or visit the aforementioned website.

Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse player Kaitlyn Petersheim, a native of Lititz, was announced as an All-ODAC honoree.
Petersheim earned a spot on the second team after getting a third-team nod last season. She was second on the team with 36 goals, 15 assists and 51 points. She also scooped up 17 ground balls and caused eight turnovers. The junior midfielder registered multi-goal performances in 12 games, scoring at least three goals in six of them. She also pitched in assists in
nine games, including four assists to pair with two goals in a 19-7 win against Ferrum. Petersheim was also second on the team with 41 draw controls.
The Eagles finished the season at 10-9 to record the team’s first winning season since 2018. The program got the No. 6 seed in the ODAC Tournament and hosted a first-round game, which was the first home postseason contest for the team since 1997. The team prevailed 14-12 over Averett to claim its first postseason home win since 1992.
The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.
The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.
The city is committed to creating opportunities for
local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Nonlocal artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.
Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.
The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients.
“God is working,” said Rutt. “ We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even
through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.
Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start

employing other people in the community,” she noted.
Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested
in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum will host a new, hands-on class titled Flax 101 on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Landis Valley Museum has grown and processed flax for many years, as flax fiber was used to create linen, an important textile to Pennsylvania Germans.
With guidance from Landis Valley historic farming expert Joe Schott, attendees will “pull,” or harvest, flax in the field; learn about the retting process; and then process retted flax to fiber. Attendees should dress to be
outside, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. This workshop requires some physical exertion. Participants should meet at the Visitor’s Center.
The event will be held if there is light rain, but it will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 29, if thunderstorms or heavy rain is predicted.
Space is limited, and all sales are final. There is a fee, with a discount for Landis Valley Associates members. Proceeds will benefit the museum.
