The Cat’s Pajamas To Play At Boettcher House By Ann Mead Ash
There are a lot of reasons that musicians take up an instrument. For the six members of The Cat’s Pajamas Old School Jazz Band, the love of jazz, especially New Orleans-style or 1920s jazz, has a special attraction. “The appeal of this type of music for a musician is that to play it, you have to strike a balance between improvising as a soloist, improvising as a group, and playing predetermined melodies and section parts,” explained trumpet player Todd Fulginiti. “It offers both structure and freedom, which keeps things lively and interesting.” Fulginiti and the other members of the band, including Faith Shiffer on clarinet, Mark Rutter on trombone, Chuck Oettel on guitar, Mike Vitale on bass, and Doug Kulp on drums, will
have the opportunity to play together and to share their music with others when The Cat’s Pajamas Old School Jazz Band appears at Boettcher House for a free outdoor concert on Sunday, July 15, at 5:30 p.m. The band’s repertoire includes tunes such as “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Bourbon Street Parade,” “St. James Infirmary Blues,” and “That’s a Plenty,” which Fulginiti said are among the most recognizable tunes the group performs. However, the group members like to keep their offering diverse. “We’re constantly adding, deleting and changing up our repertoire,” said Fulginiti. “The tunes that See The Cat’s Pajamas pg 2

Group Sponsors Service Dog By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
“Isn’t he handsome?” Erika Herold practically gushed. Herold’s praise was not for a significant other or family member. Rather, it was bestowed on 6-month-old yellow Labrador named Woody who was happily rolling in the grass at Herold’s feet. Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, and other Woodstream employees raised $5,000 to sponsor Woody to become a United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) service dog. Woody is several months into the BARKS Prison Program, through which he is being trained by an inmate at Moshannon Valley Correction Center in Phillipsburg. While at See Service Dog pg 2
