Hope Inspire Love Turns Page to More Impactful Chapter

When you start a nonprofit, you’re focused on the work and not necessarily thinking in terms of future mergers.
The founders of Hope Inspire Love kept their noses to the grindstone, and natural evolution produced organic growth.
“My heart was always collaboration and participation,” said Amy Thurston, who, along with her husband, Steve, founded Hope Inspire Love nine years ago. “Did I think about a merger? No. We weren’t coming here to reinvent what someone else was doing. She’s Somebody’s Daughter was doing things other people weren’t
doing. You’re taking the strengths of both organizations and putting them together.”
More than simply a merger, Hope Inspire Love and She’s Somebody’s Daughter recently joined forces, pooled resources and intertwined missions all in the name of fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The

Kyle Offers Big Help for Oliver

Everybody needs a role model. Everybody needs someone to bounce ideas off of. Everyone needs someone in their corner.
Little Brother Oliver has got Big Brother Kyle. It’s an evolving symbiotic relationship that is rooted in mutual respect, empathy and curiosity.
“I wanted to volunteer my time in some way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) seemed like a positive way to do so,” said Kyle. “As our relationship has grown, Oliver seems to respect me more and more and listen to what I have to say. He definitely seems to trust me more as he has become more comfortable. I’m trying to teach Oliver that things won’t always go his way, and that’s OK.”

The new Weaver Awards from the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) promote, advocate for and celebrate weaving - not the textile, yarns or thread type, but the social fabric kind.
“A weaver is someone who sees a
need and invites their neighbors to pitch in and find a solution,” said Val Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “They understand that a healthy community strengthens all of us and creates opportunities to build strong, lasting relationships in everyday places. A weaver may lead a monthly river cleanup, or have started a board game club for seniors, or host a book club or lead a group of stay-at-home parents. There are so many ways you can

Before meeting Oliver, Kyle underwent a background check and received training.
Oliver is a resident of Lititz.
“The first meet was at Oliver’s house with his mom and the match support specialist to introduce everyone involved,” said Kyle. “At the first meeting, Oliver was pretty quiet and shy, which was to be expected.”
On average, Kyle and Oliver get together about twice a month. Their time spent together includes playing with Legos at Oliver’s house, going bowling, playing tennis and pickleball and

Trivia Event Planned

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the 21 recipients of its 2026 Healing the Planet grants. A total of $100,000 was given to support projects across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania.
Among the grant recipients were the 18th Wonder Improvement Association in Reading, the Lititz Public Library, and the York County Industrial Development Authority.
Since 2021, Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer over $1.4 million in Healing the Planet grants to recipients to help
fund projects that connect communities with green spaces; protect and improve local waterways and water resources; prevent, reduce, and recover food waste; and support native plantings and habitat restoration.

“What I’ve learned from Oliver is how difficult it can be to be a young child without an adult male figure in their life,” continued Kyle. “I’ve always had two present parents and never experienced what he has. I have also learned how important the time I spend with him is to him.
My childhood was very good; both parents were present and were both positive role models who definitely shaped me into the person I am today.”
The need is great. Right now, there are more Little Brothers and Little Sisters in Lancaster County than there are Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Currently in Lancaster County, 15 adults have been matched with kids through the Big Brothers/ Little Brothers and the Big Sisters/Little Sisters programs. There are 13 male children waiting to be matched with Big Brothers locally.

names have remained the same under the umbrella of a single nonprofit. Hope Inspire Love will serve as the lead organization, and the Lemoyne-based She’s Somebody’s Daughter will perform outreach services.
“This was just a beautiful next step,” said Amy. “This allows us to better impact and really help survivors in our region. It’s a natural alignment in the right direction. It’s not a mission drift; it’s a mission realignment. We don’t ever want there to be barriers for Hope Inspire Love. This was an easy ‘yes.’ There was no pause or reservations.”
The consolidation allows the two nonprofits to work as one and to provide better services and reach more victims and potential victims of human trafficking in Lancaster, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, York, Berks, Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Montgomery and Lehigh counties. Operating under the
tagline “Better Together, Stronger Together,” Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, now also operates offices in Lemoyne and Chambersburg.
Under details of the merger, every former staff member of She’s Somebody’s Daughter was retained by the new organization.
“This partnership is a bold investment in the future of survivors and our community,” said Rosemarie Davis, executive director of She’s Somebody’s Daughter. “The exponential power of partnership with Hope Inspire Love enables us to support and expand our mission to women exploited in the commercial sex industry.”
“She’s Somebody’s Daughter’s mission is going out and meeting individuals in dark places and meeting the needs, instead of waiting for people to be referred to
them,” said Amy, who will remain in her role as CEO of Hope Inspire Love. “They’re going into that moment and into vulnerable situations like massage businesses, strip clubs, motels and prisons. We’re there for long-term support.
“We’ve been working together for years,” added Amy. “(She’s Somebody’s Daughter was) looking at where they were going in the future. We were working with them like, ‘What do you need?’”
Ultimately, it was a conversation at a conference between Thurston and She’s Somebody’s Daughter officials that got the ball rolling toward a merger. Thurston took the idea to Hope Inspire Love’s board of directors in January of 2025, and by the fall of that year, the proper documentation was submitted to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office.
“We made sure this was truly a great fit,” said Amy.

United Way Awards Scholarships
United Way of Lancaster County recently awarded more than $102,875 in Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Pre-K Scholarships. The scholarships are intended to help children and families across Lancaster County. Through Pennsylvania’s EITC program, eligible businesses receive tax credits for contributions made to qualified organizations like United Way of Lancaster County. The contributions to United
Way are then transformed into scholarships for families experiencing financial hardship, helping children to access early learning programs. By increasing access to these opportunities, United Way hopes to strengthen both family stability and long-term community well-being.

Amy and Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in the basement of their home in 2017. The organization has performed a wealth of good in those short years since.
“It started as a dream of something we had to do,” said Amy. “It started with awareness and education. We have expanded our services, and now we have over 100 volunteers giving back. If you look at the years that have passed, we’ve been able to put together a strong team that supports the mission and community.”

Through a national Weaver Awards program, LCCF is distributing 20 awards of $2,500 - a total of $50,000 - to people or small organizations that foster connections in Lancaster County. Individuals or nonprofits can apply for or nominate others for the awards at www.weavelancaster county.org through Friday, July 24.
Applicants must be 18 or older, serve or reside in Lancaster County, have a project that fosters relationships and be welcoming to any neighbor seeking
to participate in the initiative. Organizations that apply must have an annual budget below $250,000. All completed applications will be reviewed by Lancaster County Weaver Awards team members and community members.
Successful recipients of the awards will be notified in September, and winners will be recognized at a public celebration on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Companies Announce New Leadership
Horst Construction and Horst Excavating have announced that Harry F. Scheid II, who served as president of both organizations, retired from his role effective June 29, after nearly 40 years of service at Horst.
Scheid began his career at Horst in 1987, working his way through various roles within the organization before being named president of Horst Construction and Horst Excavating in 2007. In the following 18 years, Scheid’s leadership and vision drove the success of Horst’s operations and solidified the company’s presence in the commercial construction market throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
During his tenure, Scheid led initiatives to expand the company’s footprint, defined key processes integral to the company’s success, and sought to develop a culture built on trust and
grit. Scheid has shifted to an advisory role as chief executive officer for both companies, staying on the team in a more limited capacity to provide mentorship and ensure a smooth transition period.
Meanwhile, Kenneth J. Fetterolf has assumed the role of president at Horst Construction. Fetterolf is not new to the team, having served as the vice president of operations since 2010. He has worked in the construction industry in various capacities for over 30 years.
For Horst Excavating, Jason Hess has been appointed president. Hess is also a tenured Horst employee, having joined the team in 2012 and worked as a director of project management, eventually taking on the role of vice president of operations in 2024. Hess has been involved in the sitework industry in various capacities for over 25 years.
Faith-Based Soccer Program Planned for Children
Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer a new Soccer Party Club to celebrate the World Cup coming to Philadelphia.
Soccer Party Club is a 90-minute program that meets for one day. It is free for children ages 5 to 12 and will be held at various locations throughout Lancaster County. The program includes soccer-themed games, a verse, songs, and a lesson. All workers are screened as required by the Child Evangelism Fellowship Child Protection Policy.

Grants Awarded for Programs Aiding Youths
Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Services and the Touchstone Foundation were awarded $500,616 in grant funding to help expand their youth programs aimed at reducing student conflict and improving student mental health, respectively. The competitive grants, approved by the School Safety and Security Committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, are part of more than $64 million awarded to organizations across the state. The Advoz and Touchstone grants were recently announced by state Rep. Nikki Rivera. Advoz will use its $244,850 to expand its Restorative School Program at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city. The grant funds will cover the partial salaries and benefits of the executive director, director of training, and restorative schools practitioner. Addi-
tionally, funding will be used for advertising and marketing expenses, rent, a laptop, general operating expenses, and information technology support. The program serves approximately 750 students annually, teaching them skills in communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and constructive dialogue.
The Touchstone Foundation will use its $255,766 award to expand and strengthen Rise Above, a youth mental wellness initiative serving approximately 1,120 students and young adults ages 12 to 26 across Lancaster County. The funds will pay a partial amount of the current program manager’s time, pay for a program assistant and an operations manager and accountant, and support employee benefits and travel to school districts within Lancaster County. Funding will also be used
to support program evaluation led by Millersville University’s Carrie Smith, as well as communications-related costs such as photography and video documentation.
Rise Above responds directly to community needs documented in the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey and the Touchstone Foundation’s 2023 Needs Assessment, which showed high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, exclusion, and barriers to mental health access among Lancaster County youths. Through partnerships with local school districts, mental health professionals, and community organizations, the program blends mental health education, creative self-expression, youth leadership development, and mentorship to address gaps in early identification, access to support, and trusted adult relationships.

Volunteers Make Wolf Sanctuary

At the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, staff members have a difficult time imagining a world without volunteers.
“I think (an absence of volunteers) would truly affect how we operate,” said Michelle Vandernewt, the education coordinator at Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. “We started as a volunteer organization. The volunteer program is our backbone. All of our tour guides are volunteers. They come here in all kinds of weather. Some have been here a long time.”

Phillips is located at 136 S. Centerville Road, Lancaster, and the store’s last day will be July 8. It will be closed on Thursday, July 9, and reopen as Grauer’s on Friday, July 10.

“We try to honor them publicly, and we try to express our gratitude when they’re here,” said Vandernewt.
Volunteers at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania typically work five- to sixhour shifts. Many of the volunteers are local, but some drive as much as two hours to volunteer there.
On any given day, as many as 15 individuals are volunteering at the wolf sanctuary. The volunteers’ work is scheduled based on their availability.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania was founded by Lititz residents Bill and Barbara Darlington in 1980. The facility was a private sanctuary before becoming a nonprofit in 1993.
As it has evolved over the years, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania has added to its resident wolf population, hired more staff members and reinvented its methods for educating the public about wolves.
