Art is just one way Friendship Community cultivates capabilities

More than simply self-expression, art is a pure act of creation, making something from nothing. But art also possesses the power to inspire, nurture and invite exploration.

Friendship Community is very much in tune with art, its applications and what it can do. A faith-based organization headquartered at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, Friendship Community cultivates the capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism.

For safe driving in Township, prevention is key

Thepeople. The schools. The amenities. There’s a lot to like about Manheim Township. But below the surface hides a traffic fact concerning the locale that is, at the least, worrisome and, at the worst, alarming.

According to statistics provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Manheim Township had the second-most reportable vehicle crashes per capita in the state last year. That may be a surprising fact until one considers the number of major highways and thoroughfares that pass through the township.

Roads are especially busy in the summer, as the weather is favorable for more individuals pursuing interests outside. Some variables

associated with driving are out of a driver’s control, there are also practices that can make automobile travel safer. Those keys revolve around respecting vehicles, the road itself and other drivers, while maintaining focus when behind the wheel.

“Take your time, slow down, pay attention and stay off your cellphone.”

“I think the message is to just slow down,” said Sgt. Barry Waltz, public information officer for the Manheim Township Police Department. “We don’t want to meet you handling a crash or handling a traffic situation. We’d rather meet you at a community

event. There’s a crazy amount of traffic on our roadways, and there are more distractions than there ever have been.”

In 2022, PennDOT received reports of 715 crashes in Manheim Township that involved injury or vehicles being towed. Some of the most common causes of crashes were excessive speed, distracted driving, aggressive driving and cellphones.

“They’re not accidents; they’re crashes,” said Waltz, “because they can be avoided. By eliminating or minimizing distractions in a vehicle, a lot of this can be avoided. Manheim Township roads are very congested, so take your time, slow down, pay attention and stay off your cellphone. I feel like we could reduce the number of crashes if people would just do that.”

Friendship Community operates a day program known as Friendship Heart Studio, which connects 60 aspiring artists with professionals and volunteers. The work that the collaborations create is displayed at Bloomfield Village Gallery, 235 Bloomfield Drive, Lititz, Suite 111, and at Friendship Community’s Lancaster city gallery, 118 N. Water St., Suite 101,

Lancaster, not far from the city’s Gallery Row.

The artwork created by participants in the Friendship Heart Studio program is first displayed at the studio downtown before being moved to the Bloomfield Village Gallery. All proceeds from the sale of the art goes back into the program.

Sustaining nature

Katrina Lefever, sustainable landscape coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), vividly remembers the first BioBlitz held at MCC in 2022. “Last year, we had it in September, and we held a pawpaw fest as well,” she recalled. “We planted pawpaws in the woods and had some fruit tasting.”

While the first blitz, organized by Lefever along with naturalists Lydia Martin, Cameala Freed, and Rita Tomassetti was held in the fall. Lefever believed a summer date

would attract a wider age group. The second MCC BioBlitz and Nature Fest will be held on the MCC grounds at 21 S. 12th St., Akron, on Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to join a BioBlitz team, which will count insects and plant life using the iNaturalist app or pen and paper, should register at https://mcc.org /forms/2023-mcc-bioblitz-nature -fest by Friday, July 7. The Nature Fest is open to the public, and it will include live music, art, and plant giveaways. Children are welcome with adult supervision.

with nature.” To that end, Lefever has identified and removed invasive plants on the property and replaced them with native plants. “It has made a difference already,” she said.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

At the Nature Fest, there will be information tables, and visitors will have the opportunity to work at an art table overseen by Tomassetti. There will be a plant and plug giveaway of native plants. Lefever explained that a plug is a very small plant. “There is soil, but it’s mostly root,” she said. A musical group called Nodding Onion will also play. “(Nodding Onion) uses PlantWave technology, which is technology that attaches electrodes to a plant,” explained Lefever, who noted that every plant creates its own music.

Lefever has been at work to change the landscape at MCC since early 2021. “We made the move to ecological landscaping, which is trying to live with rather than against nature,” said Lefever, who noted that the effort is based on the work of Doug Tallamy, a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, who has been studying the relationship between plant life and insects for decades.

“Right now, our insect and bird numbers are plummeting,” said Lefever. “We have to make changes so we are not fighting nature but living

Now, Lefever would like to share the changes with area residents via the BioBlitz.

“We are aware of the amazing bounty here,” she said. “There’s a wonderful number of native plants (on the property). We want to share that with the public and make them aware.”

But perhaps the greatest value created is the sense of purpose, freedom and accomplishment felt by the program’s participants.

“The individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, they’re the artists,” said Colton. “There is definitely a connection between brain activity and art. You’re also bringing in colors and bringing in different ideas. The process of being able to express yourself through art is a whole therapeutic connection. Many people catch the excitement of the studio program.”

Friendship Community opened its first studio and gallery on Main Street in Ephrata in 2008. Five years later, the operation was moved to the downtown Lancaster location on Water Street.

In 2018, when Friendship Community opened its human resources office on Bloomfield Drive, the second studio was created to com-

plement the existing one.

“Our mission is cultivating the capabilities of the individuals,” said Colton. “We want to support them as they impact the world around them. We’re trying to give them experiences. We want everyone to have an everyday life. We want to make sure we’re giving them whatever we have in our everyday lives.”

In 2022, Friendship Community celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding by members of the Mennonite community. Funded by the state and supported by the County of Lancaster, Friendship Community houses 72 residents, most of whom are local, in 24 grouphome settings.

“In 1972, the Mennonite community was concerned by

aging children with special needs,” said Colton. “Not one, but many churches got together. They wanted their kids to learn life skills so they could live independently or partially independently. Now, we’re growing, not only in the numbers we serve, but also the programs we’re offering.”

Help the Fight will host its 14th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 9:30 p.m.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the banquet, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 9. Registration forms may be acquired at www.helpthefight.org or by emailing helpthefightnow@gmail.com. An early bird special will be offered to those who register by Thursday, Aug. 31. The banquet will include a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., as well as a benefit auction throughout the evening. Items available to bid on will include artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, furniture, children’s toys, clothes, designer handbags and weekend getaways. Prize drawings will also be held during the event; tickets for the drawings will only be

available to purchase with cash.

The items in the auction are donated by various businesses and individuals in the community leading up to the banquet. Help the Fight invites anyone who wishes to make a donation to contact its office via email or by calling 717455-7095. The deadline to make a donation is Friday, Sept. 15. “We need the community’s support through donations,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator for Help the Fight. “Anyone who does artwork, makes jewelry or wants to put together a gift basket can donate.”

Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County. These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after.

Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister.

The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from working, and she was left without insurance or an income. Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000.

Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years, the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains its largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”

Help the Fight is always looking for volunteers; those interested in volunteering can contact the office for more information.

Manheim Township is home to 160 miles of streets and roads, including portions of major arteries like routes 30, 283 and 222, as well as Lititz Pike, Oregon Pike and Fruitville Pike. On average, there are between two and four fatal crashes in the township each year, and about 5% of vehicle occupants overall are found to not be wearing seat belts. Before the pandemic, the number of reported crashes

in Manheim Township had risen steadily and slightly from 2013.

“I think people are generally safe drivers, but they’re easily distracted,” said Waltz. “I feel like where we have the most crashes are on major throughfares. Those highways make it easy for people to be comfortable.”

Waltz said that traffic is one of the Manheim Township Police Department’s “top concerns.” He also said that the department handles an average of 225 total crashes each month. He added that nonreportable crashes take about 30 minutes to process at the scene and reportable crashes take about an hour to process.
